Mercedes starred in a golden era in Formula 1, dominating the hybrid stage implemented from 2014 to 2021. Eight constructors’ championships and seven drivers’ championships elevated the team to the next level of the category, where one of the aspects that stood out during all these years was the powerful engine.

A reliable power unit that rarely presented a problem, made Lewis Hamilton world champion six times and Nico Rosberg once. Mercedes wanted to take advantage of that engine, specifically from 2015, by implementing it in the Mercedes-AMG One street model.

The power generated by this part derives directly from the one used by the silver arrows seven seasons ago in Formula 1, where only Hamilton and Rosberg were contenders for the title, which in the end ended up in the hands of the Briton.

The engine adapted to the street model generates 1,063 hp with top speed of 352 km/h, and being a version drawn from a single power unit, so was its production, given that only 275 units are manufactured with a price tag of $2.75 million.

Formula 1 Footprint and History

This model already knew the public light previously. During the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, a concept was revealed under the name Project One, which years later has become a reality with a twin-turbo V6 engine taken from Formula 1, with a lot of history under the hood.

The Mercedes-AMG One’s 1.6-liter turbo-hybrid V6 turbo-hybrid power unit has been taken from the Mercedes W06 of the 2015 Formula 1 season. It delivers 1,063 hp, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, while reaching 200 km/h in 7 seconds. Total speed is 352 km/h.

The power and thrust force is distributed as if it were a Formula 1 vehicle, i.e., distributed between V6 engine, MGU-K and MGU-H. On each front axle will be located an electric motor that will provide 163 hp each.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has been known for dominating Formula 1 from 2014 to 2021. Eight Constructors’ Championships won in a row, along with 7 drivers’ titles have placed the organization in the historic books of the world’s top motorsport category.

Now, with the introduction of the new technical regulations, things are a little different. They are no longer fighting for victories, but have improved considerably compared to the start of the 2022 season. However, it can boast of being the first team in any sport in general to invest in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

This was announced by the German team in an official press release, as part of its 2030 “Net Zero” carbon reduction targets. This sustainable fuel serves as a by-product of waste (forestry and agricultural waste, used cooking oil, carbon captured from the air and green hydrogen), being an innovative technology recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization that recycles carbon instead of adding it to the atmosphere.

Mercedes details that more than a quarter of the emissions generated by the team are produced as a result of aviation. This step will therefore significantly reduce the impact that is generated after traveling from one place to another, especially given the fact that in various parts of the calendar long distances must be traveled between one race and the next.

“The purchase of this fuel will be implemented as part of the Scope 3 indirect aviation emissions,” says the German team, where it plans to achieve a reduction of around 50% of carbon dioxide emissions, while offsetting the remaining emissions in other ways.

“Sustainable aviation fuel has the potential to transform the way we travel and the impact we have on the environment. This is a topic I think about a lot, both personally and professionally: equipment flies a lot. If we have to fly, we have to find a better way to do it,” sentenced Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1 Team Principal.

“SAF is the best solution available to the aviation industry at the moment. Our goal is to be at the forefront of change, using our global motorsports platform as a model for a more sustainable and diversified future,” Wolff concluded.

The Mercedes EQG electric model will carry a part of Tesla in its structure, as the battery will be developed by the company Sila Nanotechnologies, founded by a former engineer of the U.S. factory. The vehicle is expected to reach the market during 2025 with the particularity of using silicon anodes in the energy source.

The company is located in California, and according to internal figures raised $590 million in financing, valued at $3.3 billion. The silicon is being used by the German company with the aim of providing up to 40% higher energy density compared to those currently used in the EQ model range, at around 800 Wh/l at cell level. This material is presented as an interesting variant to graphite.

Now, Mercedes will not be the first car manufacturer to use silicon for batteries, since Tesla said it would develop this chemical element for use in energy sources, so Sila Nanotechnologies has probably taken as a guide the steps taken by the company led by Elon Musk with respect to silicon.

Regarding the manufacturing process, the company claims that it will employ 100% renewable energy use at the new facility, located in Washington. “Sila has come a long way since we established our strategic partnership in 2019. They have demonstrated their ability not only to deliver scientific innovation at the highest level, but also to manufacture high-quality material, said Markus Schäfer, member of the Executive Board of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer, responsible for development and procurement.

The EQG model will be an electrified vehicle profiled for family, mid-range and short-range environments, ideal for urban environments. Due to its size and weight, it will be difficult to extract extreme potential. However, its strengths will be based on the battery and silicon anode-based technology that it will introduce to the sustainable automotive market.

As part of its sustainable goals for the future, Mercedes-Benz announced a series of plans and procedures to be followed to reduce carbon emissions by up to 50%, going beyond electric vehicles to encompass all factory activities.

One of the objectives will be to halve the footprint generated by cars by 2030, as part of the process that seeks to achieve zero emissions. However, despite focusing on electrification, the steps that the German manufacturer will take will extend beyond just producing models of this type.

Specifically, there will be five: electrification, sustainable energies, reducing emissions when assembling batteries, using renewable energies to manufacture cars and increasing the process and use of recycling. By 2030 they expect to sell only electrified vehicles, while by 2025 they project to obtain 50% of their revenues from hybrids and electric vehicles.

Batteries will play a key role in the path that Mercedes poses for eight years from now. Reducing emissions during the manufacturing process is one of many topics that both the Germans and other manufacturers are studying. At the same time, increasing energy density would be an advantage for customers who opt for electrification, since they would have a car that will travel more kilometers at a lower cost.

“The desire for individual mobility continues to grow. Our mission is to meet this need in a sustainable way. Mercedes-Benz has a clear roadmap on how to become carbon neutral,” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz, via the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) digital conference.

Mercedes-Benz’s Plan (Source: Mercedes)

On the other hand, 70% of energy needs in production will have to come from renewable energy by 2030. Using steel, environmentally friendly aluminum, and other materials being manufactured by Mercedes will contribute to meeting the brand’s sustainable goals.

Vehicle seats will feature upholstery made from recycled PET plastic bottles, floor coverings made from reclaimed fishing line and carpet remnants. In fact, Mercedes EQS and EQE models will carry cable conduits made from landfill waste.

Mercedes-Benz’s Plan (Source: Mercedes)

Last but not least, beyond sustainability, Mercedes has taken a step forward in gender equality and inclusion after announcing that 30% of senior executive management positions will be held by women by 2030.

Just when we believed we had seen it all, the IAA Mobility 2021, held in Munich, arrived to leave us speechless with new technological innovations from the world’s leading automakers.

This year, Mercedes presented a system that enables their vehicles to read drivers’ minds, allowing certain operations to be performed just by thinking about them!

This is the Vision AVTR, a car with no steering wheel, as the driver can interact with it through a biometric system.

Its technology is based on a visual perception system and by simply raising the hand, a menu with points of light is projected on a digital screen located on the dashboard.

Operation

Using a brain-computer interface device with portable electrodes attached to the back of the user’s head, the driver can intuitively navigate between different functionalities.

According to Mercedes, the device “measures neural activity in the system in real time, analyzes brain waves and recognizes which lights you are focusing your attention on. The more intense it is, the stronger the neural activity is,” they say. “The device triggers the appropriate function in the vehicle, such as opening a window or activating the air conditioning.”

Instead of a helmet with electrodes, the brand’s structure simply uses electrodes attached to the back of the skull that pick up electrical activity in the brain. This mental activity is analyzed by an artificial intelligence system interpreting your desires. This doesn’t happen automatically, according to Mercedes, it requires a one-minute calibration process.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR was designed jointly with James Cameron, the director of the film Avatar, and is inspired by it in terms of both design and human-machine connection.

Finally, the rumors have become a reality. Formula E team Mercedes-EQ, following the history-making World Drivers’ Championship title with Nyck de Vries and World Team Championship, announced that it will leave the series after the end of season 8.

The withdrawal is due to the fact that Mercedes will redirect its resources to other sustainable fields to face the “accelerated electrification” of the automotive sector, while promising three electric structures to be released in 2023, according to a press release published on the company’s website.

August 2022 will be the end of a team that took its first steps into the electric single-seater series with de Vries himself, who was a rookie, along with German driver, Stoffel Vandoorne. They have been the driving duo since their debut.

To date, Mercedes-EQ has been in 38 races with four victories and 11 podiums since 2019/20 season start, improving the category’s level which already counted with Porsche, Audi and BMW’s presence. The latter two, by the way, have already stated that they will not be present for the eighth campaign.

The brand, aiming to become 100% electric by 2030, has promised to explore options for a possible participation in 2023, when the Gen 3 era begins, leaving the doors open for sale to new owners.

“We thank Mercedes for its support since joining the ABB FIA Formula E FIA World Championship. Automakers are facing EU and UK regulations for transitioning to an all-electric future, which reinforces Formula E’s vision,” said series founder and chairman, Alejandro Agag.

On the other hand, Formula E CEO, Jamie Reigle, thanked the outgoing team for his company during the Gen 2 era, while highlighting the fact that six teams have already committed to the next technological step with the Gen 3 era.

Radek Jelinek, President of Mercedes Benz Italia, celebrated that the team had a successful weekend at the E-Prix in Rome, the scene of the third and fourth Round of the first season of Formula E as the FIA World Championship.

“It was a successful weekend. After Formula 1, which we entered many years ago, also achieving important results, the transition to Formula E is a logical and natural step not only because it has now become an internationally recognized motorsport championship, but also because of the development of the know-how of companies,” said Jelinek.

“It is important to transfer sports technology to business assets. Everything falls within our ‘Ambition 2039’ strategy, thanks to which we will become a Carbon Neutral company from that date,” he added.

The Mercedes boss estimates that in 2022, the production of the factories will become Carbon Neutral, having as a clear and strategic roadmap that makes sustainability and electrification its fundamental pillars.

Plans

The strategy announced by the brand contemplates the redefinition of the product portfolio and the communication itself to offer a new luxury experience, increasingly electric, software-based and, of course, sustainable.

Strategic are also the new EVA (Electric Vehicle Architecture) platforms, dedicated to higher-segment cars and MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture), designed instead for compact and midsize cars.

Starting in 2025, strong contribution margins have been targeted for all new architectures thanks to high trade-off, controlled investments, and continued declining costs for battery systems. By 2030, the portfolio of electrified xEVs will gradually expand, reaching a share of more than 50% of total products.

Many more models will enrich the electric vehicle portfolio thanks to the second new dedicated electric platform, the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), designed for compact and midsize cars.

Investment and planning

Mercedes-Benz will transfer even more resources and expertise to electrical product development and invest in new technologies and drivers to accelerate electrical range and efficiency.

Attention will also focus on the sub-brands: starting this year, electrification will in fact become an increasingly distinctive element of Mercedes-AMG performance.

The next pure-electric 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS will be the most aerodynamic production car ever made. According to the German car-maker, in a bid to give its battery-powered flagship the best possible real-world electric range, the version of the all-new Mercedes-Benz EQS will have a drag coefficient of just 0.20Cd.

Subjected to countless days testing in the wind tunnel, the slippery aerodynamics are attributed by chief designer Robert Lesnik to the vehicle’s smooth and near-seamless design.

Mercedes says the unveiling is still a “few weeks away” but has released two new images of the EQS to whet our appetite for the final production model.

The Slovenian-born designer describe the EQS as “revolutionary” and said work began on pioneering new Benz almost nine years ago. Lesnik says the pure-electric limo is the culmination of all of the car-maker’s “crazy ideas” that were played with over the last decade.

“Purpose architecture, we believe the purpose architecture deserves a purpose design,” he said referring to what lies beneath the EQS.

Nevertheless, the most striking feature, says its creator, is the single ‘bow’ line that stretches across the entire 5.2-metre-long sedan.

Right now, the EQS’s exterior is unseen but pics from the brand’s Twitter can give an idea of what to expect. There’s full-width light bars front and rear, no creases down the flanks, a clamshell bonnet and “Black Panel” grille (mainly for styling, not cooling Because is a electric vehicle) with little three-pointed star motifs.

The EQS, which will be presented on April 15, is the first Mercedes model to be based on the new EVA platform specific to electric cars, and which will also serve as the basis for the next Mercedes EQE and the SUV versions of the EQS and EQE, among others.

Accustomed to reigning in Formula 1, Mercedes is preparing to take risks in season number seven of Formula E, which will be the team’s second season in the electric competition.

In 2019-2020 Mercedes finished on the podium of the competition which was a great start for the their debut season. For 2020-21 German manufacturers will start the campaign with a highly evolved powertrain.

Ian James, Mercedes EQ Formula E team director pointed out the team’s new car is an “evolution” of the Silver Arrow 01 from last season, but with major changes.

“Conceptually, is an evolution,” he said. “But there isn’t really any component part we haven’t touched and redesigned and gone at again.

“That’s really born from the fact that when you’re working that concept, we had started on the season seven power unit before we’d even turned a wheel in anger in season six.

“You’re laying out that groundwork really very early on. So it is a completely new power unit that we’re bringing for season seven.”

Last season Mercedes’ mistakes

Despite the good finish in 2019-2020, Mercedes suffered reliability errors, centered on Nyck de Vries’ car. The young Dutch rider could not get on the podium in Santiago de Chile due to a battery problem and in Mexico he had a brake system failure.

De Vries who also suffered mechanical problems in Marrakech and in the second of six races at the Berlin ePrix. A situation on which Ian James has spoken.

“We have to focus on being more effective in our second season. We have a strong protocol when it comes to dealing with failures, be they technical or operational errors. It is vitally important that we all speak honestly about what happened last season, as it allows us that the mistakes we have made do not happen again. Our rookie year is behind us and that no longer serves as an excuse. We need to reduce mistakes and we cannot make the same mistake twice, that’s clear. We trust our package for 2021, so if we can eliminate those mistakes we are in a good position.”
