“The pinnacle of electric performance,” is how the company catalogs its Sapphire model, which figures to be the world’s first fully electrified luxury supercar sedan.

“Today, with the introduction of the Sapphire line, we take the next logical step forward. Lucid Air Sapphire, being the first Lucid product to carry the Sapphire name, builds on our technical prowess to take high electric performance to the next level,” said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid Group.

The mechanical section enjoys tremendous power, as it is capable of reaching 1,200 horsepower thanks to three state-of-the-art motors manufactured by the company itself.

Speed and Luxury

The power units bring with them the brand’s microjet stator cooling system and corrugated winding, while the dual rear-drive unit features new technology: heat exchanger and higher coolant flow rate.

All this makes the Lucid Air Sapphire 2023 accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2 seconds, while 100 mph is reached in less than 4 seconds. Undoubtedly, an absolute force of power that the company has wanted to keep in incognito, because although it claims it will exceed 1,200 hp, it does not reveal the exact figure.

Aerodynamically it looks simple, but it is not. An oval or curved design shows off from the hood to the rear. The front grille has been aggressively structured with airflow deflecting parts located in the lower area.

Also, the wind flow runs along the car’s silhouette to achieve a desired lift effect, as well as being necessary due to the speed and power that the Lucid Air Sapphire 2023 can achieve.

Production of the car will begin in the first half of next year, although Lucid announces that production will be limited with deliveries expected in the U.S. and Canada at a cost of $249,000 dollars ($325,000 Canadian dollars).

Despite the offensive that Lucid is proposing, the arrival to European countries will be gradual. After the initial installation on the German territory, the goal is to reach Great Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Belgium. Subsequently, the south of the continent and the Mediterranean countries will be part of the expansion.

A Vehicle to Dream About

While it is true that matching brands such as Mercedes, Audi and BMW seems to be an utopia for Lucid, the brand new electric Lucid Air, which has finally started to be delivered in its special Dream Edition launch version, offers reasons to compete, as it is the only electrified car on the market that has a range of more than 800 kilometers, followed by the Mercedes-Benz EQS or the Tesla Model S Long Range.

In addition, the company announced a few months ago that the jewel in the crown will be “the electric car capable of charging faster its battery”. The first tests confirmed that the Lucid Air is capable of supporting more than 300 kW of charging power, and that it takes just 22 minutes to recover 482 km of autonomy.

Strategy for Offering Cars

As for the style of making the vehicles available, everything seems to indicate that Lucid will bet on its famous Lucid Studios, which are direct sales points or dealerships where the product can be shown in a classic style. 

It is estimated that the main cities of Europe and the United States will have these points of sale, but not the United Kingdom, which is ruled out, at least for the moment, because it is too complicated for Lucid to manufacture cars with the steering wheel located on the right.

The vision of Lucid Motors does not stop in 2022 and already for next year they plan their incursion into Asian territory, specifically in China.

During an event attended by personalities including Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, the firm showcased their new creation to investors, media members and local legislators. 

With 13,000 reservations for the Lucid Air currently on inventory, the company expects to make first deliveries to customers of Dream Edition models by the end of October. Manufacturing is set to ramp up from there, with Grand Touring, Touring and Air Pure models in the future.

Through an official statement, the company noted that with customer-grade cars rolling off the line, Lucid has confirmed that the Air meets all applicable U.S. Department of Transportation regulatory requirements.

They note that the Lucid Air Grand Touring has an official 516-mile range capability rating with a 112 kWh battery pack, giving it an industry-leading efficiency of 4.6 miles per kWh.

“Our technology will enable electric vehicles to become increasingly lighter, more efficient and less expensive, and today represents an important step in our quest to expand the accessibility of more sustainable transportation,” added the release.

Model Details

In addition to an excellent mileage rating, the Lucid Air Dream Edition features 19-inch wheels. It is also more than 100 miles better than the closest competitor, the Tesla Model S Long Range, which travels just 405 in comparison.

The vehicle was praised during its official reveal for luxurious detailing, noiseless ride and impressive legroom. It is available in a range of performance levels, from 800 to 1,111 horsepower.

The company projects it will bring $9 billion in economic output to Arizona by 2024, along with 15,000 jobs both at its own operation and through induced demand with suppliers.

As part of their sustainability strategy, the next few years for Lucid align with an expansion plan not only on their performance lines, but in their overall facilities. The company plans to expand from 590 acres in Arizona to 2.85 million square feet, providing it with more manufacturing space.
