Formula E and the 11 teams that make up the category are dressed up to welcome season 9, in which the Gen3 vehicle that marks the new era will make its debut.

A few days ago, the electric single-seater series unveiled its new image, and now it is the Nissan team that announces a new “face” for 2023. The Japanese team presents striking colors of cherry blossoms.

Also known as Sakura, the team’s choice to incorporate this iconic flower in its ninth season livery is not only a nod to the squad’s Japanese DNA, but also symbolizes and celebrates a new beginning.

The upcoming campaign will mark the start of the much-anticipated Gen3 era, and will also be the first time Nissan competes in Formula E as a single team and under its new name.

The striking livery of the NISSAN e-4ORCE 04 stands out and commemorates a new era not only for the championship, but also for the team itself.

A New Era

“Electrification is at the heart of Nissan’s long-term vision, and Formula E plays an increasing role in it,” said Ashwani Gupta, Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer.

He noted that season 9 marks a new beginning for Nissan’s participation in the championship. It will be the fifth time they have competed in Formula E, but the first without mergers.

“We have a long history in racing and we also love to dare to do what others won’t do. Our new livery celebrates our Japanese heritage and I’m sure the design will stand out on the track like never before. I am very excited for the season to begin, and I am confident that we have everything we need to make the start of the Gen3 era was very successful for us at Nissan, “he stressed.

For his part, Tommaso Volpe, Nissan Formula E General Manager explained that they wanted to create something totally different and unique for this season to mark such an important moment in the tournament.

“The upcoming campaign is a big moment for the series, with the introduction of the Gen3 cars. But it is also key for us at Nissan, with the team operating under its new name as we take full ownership of all our operations,” he noted.

The Nissan Formula E team also has a new driver lineup for the upcoming season, combining experience and youth with Formula E race winner Norman Nato and 2022 Super Formula runner-up Sacha Fenestraz joining the team. Frenchman Nato will compete in the #17 car, while French-Argentinean Fenestraz will get behind the wheel of the #23 machine.

The electrification of the automotive market has become one of the most worked environmental decarbonization tools in recent years. Manufacturers in the sector are working to develop quality electric cars, which will take the industry by storm in the near future.

One of the companies working hard in this direction is Nissan, which has long defined its work strategy through the Ambition 2030 plan, baptized as the company’s “long-term vision”. However, it has recently gone a step further in favor of sustainability after announcing the creation of the EV Transformation Office.

This new department will be headed by Aditya Jairaj, currently Marketing and Sales Strategy Director for Electric Cars, who will now be in charge of overseeing and accelerating the transformation of the strategic electrification pillars, key for the Asian manufacturer as it moves into the future, as well as the connected services offered by the company.

Nissan’s Projections

Nissan has set a goal of introducing 23 electric vehicle models over the next 10 years through Nissan and Infiniti (its luxury brand), where 15 of them will be 100% electrified, with the aim of significantly increasing its sales in the automotive market.

“We are preparing for a sustainable future as we make significant investments to rapidly transform our business. Establishing the Office of Electric Vehicle Transformation strengthens our commitment to empower mobility and build on our track record, achievements in innovation and electrification,” said Mike Colleran, Nissan’s Senior Vice President of U.S. Sales and Marketing.

With a discreet qualifying that placed them in ninth place in the standings, the Nissan team has decided to completely overhaul its driver grid ahead of the third generation (Gen3) era of Formula E, which will bring with it one of the newest cars in zero-emission motorsport.

Sebastien Buemi‘s fifteenth place and Maximilian Guenther‘s nineteenth place seem to be enough reasons for the team to make a move and announce Norman Nato and Sacha Fenestraz as the new drivers at the wheel of their cars.

Nato has already tasted the sweetness of victory in Formula E during season 6 in Berlin. After participating in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2022, the Japanese will return full time, noting that he closed a brief foray in Seoul for the injured Sam Bird.

“I am very happy to return as a full-time driver in Formula E with Nissan,” Nato said in statements reviewed by the official website of the electric series.

“The Gen3 era will be a new chapter for the championship, and I’m excited. The hard work starts now: I have a lot to learn and areas to develop with the team to be at my best for the first round of Season 9 in Mexico City,” added Nato.

A Hopeful Debut

On Fenestraz’s side, next season will mark his first full-time campaign in Formula E, following his debut in the final round of Season 8 at DRAGON / PENSKE, replacing Antonio Giovinazzi, who also missed the second race due to physical problems.

The French-Argentinean racer won the Japanese Formula 3 title in 2019 and continues to compete in both Super Formula, as well as in the GT500 class. So far in 2022, the 23-year-old has claimed victory in both tournaments and currently leads the Super GT standings.

He assured that his arrival in the series is a dream come true and represents a big step forward in his career. “It’s going to be a different challenge for me, as it will be my first season in an all-electric car. I’m excited to compete in this championship, as street circuits are my favorite, with lots of risks and no margin for error.”

He noted that as a rookie in a new format he must prepare hard to not disappoint the trust that Nissan executives have placed in him.

Nissan believes that this move marks a new era for the team, which is confident that through a combination of experience and the opportunity to nurture new talent, represents the right balance to compete in the new Formula E project.

Despite the poor results, the franchise extended words of thanks to Buemi and Guenter, who gave their best effort representing Nissan‘s colors.

The steps for McLaren to enter Formula E are taking shape. The iconic team will take Mercedes’ place and has now reached an agreement with Nissan to use its powertrain.

Weeks ago, McLaren Director Zak Brown had already said that the team would not develop its own machine, so they were in talks to acquire the process from another manufacturer.

Nissan has taken important steps that demonstrate its strong interest in Formula E. In 2018, they came to the electric single-seater series to supplant Renault, earlier this year they bought e.dams to take full control of the workforce, and now they take on the challenge of leading the engineering of a historic brand like McLaren.

In that sense, Nissan Director Tommaso Volpe emphasized that they are not only participating in the category to compete, but also to demonstrate to a wide range of spectators how “impressive, powerful and efficient our electric vehicles are in general.”

“Our collaboration with McLaren will give us even more opportunities when it comes to accelerating the development of our technology and showing it to fans around the world,” he added.

For his part, Brown believes this will be a partnership that will boost both McLaren’s performance and the development of Nissan’s powertrain technology in Formula E.

“Nissan has demonstrated its knowledge, skill and commitment over the past four seasons in Formula E, as well as going into the Gen3 era. We have every confidence that the partnership will bring many successes to both parties,” the executive assured.

Drivers and Funding

After defining the seat with which it will participate and the powertrain it will use in Formula E, McLaren has on its agenda to define the drivers who will be behind the wheel of the team.

Likewise, the team is conducting intense negotiations to obtain commercial partners that will allow it to participate in the series with the required economic boost, and according to information published by Motorsport, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund would be one of the manufacturer’s allies.

Despite naysayers and defections from some manufacturers, Formula E continues its steady pace toward an evolution that will be further accentuated with the unveiling of the Gen3 car, scheduled for April 28 in Monaco.

Seven teams have already given the go-ahead for season 9, and a few days ago, Nissan acquired the entire e.dams operation, which undoubtedly represents a new boost for the electric single-seater series.

For Formula E CEO, Jamie Reigle, this news fits like a glove as the category is looking for manufacturers with a genuine commitment to accelerate the shift to electric mobility, with Nissan among the biggest brands with racing DNA that see motorsport as a platform to drive development cycles and drive innovation.

“Nissan’s commitment is a powerful validation of our approach. Nissan has the scale and ambition to change the course of the industry. As a global manufacturer, it can deploy huge development and marketing resources in all key markets for Formula E,” Reigle said.

The executive also referred to the implementation of a cost cap as a key aspect of Nissan’s participation. “I am convinced that, in addition to technology transfer, a global activation platform and world-class competition, Nissan sees long-term value for its business in Formula E competition thanks to the impending financial regulations we have worked so hard to enact.”

He said the regulations provide clarity on the cost side to ensure that the investment profile is sensible for participants.

Nissan e.dams’ Journey

In alliance with Renault, e.dams won the first three team titles in Formula E history and tasted success in the 2015-16 drivers’ championship through Sebastien Buemi.

Co-founded by Jean-Paul Driot, his sons Olivier and Gregory took over the running of the racing team after his death in 2019. “They were the first to believe in Formula E with a proven commitment to the championship,” Reigle said.

He noted that the Driots and their team helped shape the strategic direction of the championship, while providing objective and passionate support, not only as a team, but also as stewards of the rules and regulations, as well as developers of driving talent.

“When the history of Formula E is written, the most committed from the beginning will be remembered and the Driot family is a pillar in this regard,” Reigle noted.

The third generation (Gen3) of Formula E, which will introduce a more powerful car with incredible technology for Season 9, has served as an incentive for the category’s teams to strengthen their commitment and make large investments.

In this case it is Nissan, which has decided to throw all its eggs in the basket and buy the entire operation of its team, which until now has been shared with other brands.

The e.dams team – an offshoot of the DAMS structure in Formula 2 – has competed in Formula E since the category’s inception in 2014, started as part of Renault before the French manufacturer gave way to Nissan.

Olivier and Gregory Driot took the reins of the DAMS team following the death of the team’s founder, their father Jean-Paul Driot, but since then, they have sold part of the F2 structure to former Formula 1 driver Charles Pic.

They retained majority control of the Formula E team, but now Nissan has bought that part of the business ahead of the start of the Gen3 regulations scheduled for the 2022-2023 season.

All Hands on Deck for this New Stage

Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer, Ashwani Gupta noted that the relationship with e.dams has been good and fruitful. However, in deciding to invest heavily in the Gen3 era, they want to have full control of key points such as the powertrain and race team.

“This project is an integral part of Nissan Motor Company. From an investment point of view, we are fully prepared and able to carry it out.” However, from Japan we have already sent many engineers to France to work on this project,” Gupta told Motorsport.

For his part, Tommaso Volpe will continue as general manager of Nissan’s Formula E team and top boss of the e.dams operation. The executive explained that Nissan taking control of the team will allow them to have a much easier collaboration between the two parties, as it makes sense for the manufacturer to be in charge of its own destiny on the track.

“At the moment, the single-seater is developed within the alliance platform, and the team is an independent company. But the moment the team is owned by Nissan, we will be able to fully synergize all operations,” he added.

Undoubtedly, the Gen3 era of Formula E has aroused great expectations, and the mystery will be unveiled on April 28 in Monaco, with the presentation of the new electric series vehicle.

The competition to dominate the booming electric vehicle market is intensifying. A few days ago, General Motors announced an investment of more than 7 billion dollars for these technologies; Stellantis formed a platform to recover historical brands and transform them into electrified ones, such as Chrysler; and now Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi have announced an alliance to focus their efforts on this new mobility.

The three companies with a long history on the automotive industry plan to allocate 23 billion dollars for the development of electric vehicles within five years.

The “Alliance to 2030” partnership plans to launch more than 30 electrified prototypes based on five sophisticated platforms to which technicians from the three companies will have access. One of the key objectives is to standardize and share the batteries and technology used by Nissan.

One of the goals also set by the alliance is that by 2026, more than 10 million vehicles will be on the road with models equipped with autonomous driving systems. By then, more than 5 million Alliance Cloud systems will be delivered per year, with a total of 25 million cars on the road. In fact, the alliance will be the first global mass-market manufacturer to introduce the Google ecosystem in its cars.

Advanced Structure

The investment to be made by the members of Alliance to 2030 will not be wasted, as they will form five platforms of excellent technology to manufacture high-level cars.

In that sense, 90% of the models will be based on five common electric vehicle systems, covering most markets in the major regions.

The CMF-AEV platform, which is the basis for the new Dacia Spring; the KEI-EV platform, for ultra-compact electric vehicles or the LCV-EV Family platform, intended for professional vehicles and will be the basis for the Renault Kangoo and the Nissan Townstar.

Additionally, there is the CMF-EV platform, which will arrive in a few weeks in vehicles such as the electric Nissan Ariya and Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric. This platform is expected to be a reference for the new generation of electric vehicles from the association’s partners.

Moreover, in 2024 Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi will launch the electric CMF-BEV platform, which offers up to 400 kilometers of range. They estimate that the aerodynamic performance will help reduce costs by 33% and energy consumption by more than 10% compared to the current Renault ZOE.

This structure will be responsible for producing 250,000 units per year for the Renault, Alpine and Nissan brands.

A strategic alliance between the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Nissan has been launched to develop the new lunar rover, which will have the electric technology present on Leaf and Ariya models to ensure optimal performance once it is operating.

To this end, the vehicle manufacturer has been working since 2020 on the driving control of the lunar rover prototype, implementing the technology of electrified cars so they can manage complicated terrain, such as sand, rocks, small mountains and any other irregular terrain, providing a significant amount of energy.

In addition, the e-4ORCE traction system on Nissan Ariya will also be present for all-wheel control so that all the lunar vehicle’s capabilities are at 100% on a continuous basis. What stands out about this system is the ability to autonomously operate the wheels, ensuring greater all-terrain capability on space surfaces.

“Automobile uses and driving situations are very varied. Our goal is to achieve maximum driving performance through research and development. We believe the knowledge gained from this joint research with JAXA will lead to vehicle innovations that will bring benefits to customers,” said Toshiyuki Nakajima, General Manager of the Advanced Vehicle Engineering Department responsible for the development of e-4ORCE control at Nissan.

Now, to traverse sandy terrain, Nissan has modified the e-4ORCE drive by using a motive force control that monitors the terrain over which it will travel, reducing the spin of each wheel and making a difference so the lunar vehicle is not stuck on the surface.

On the other hand, Ikkoh Funaki, Director of JAXA’s Space Exploration Innovation Center, says they hope to use the knowledge gained from partnerships with brands, including Nissan, for the development of their lunar prototypes.

“JAXA aims to apply research results to future space exploration…. By conducting research with Nissan, which has expertise in electrified technologies, we hope to apply our findings to the development of higher-performance lunar vehicles”, said Funaki.

Maximilian Günther had everything cooked. While there was talk about the uncertain future of the German driver after the end of the ” season seven” of Formula E, because of BMW’s departure, he calmly and confidently declared that he would continue in the electric single-seater series.

The driver already got a team shortly and now he will defend Nissan e.dams’ colors for the 2022 season. The team confirmed his presence on the grid by committing to the Gen3 regulations, increasing Günther’s possibilities of continuing on the grid, while teams are leaning towards maintaining their line-up for next summer to develop the new car.

Behind the wheel of the BMW, he became the youngest race winner in the Championship, but the manufacturer’s departure forced him to make a change of scenery.
