eSkootr Championship (eSC) prepared for months for the arrival of the 100% electric scooter series. Unique in the racing sector, it expounded its views on sustainability, micromobility, racing and safety, all together within a concept that managed to quickly catch on with motorsports fans.

The category was founded in 2019 by Hrag Sarkissian and Khalil Beschir with the intention of promoting sustainability, but beyond that, it sought to showcase a new way of looking at scooters and micromobility, using sport as a platform for momentum and visibility.

The championship concept has the footprint of Alex Würz, former Formula 1 driver, co-founder and safety ambassador of eSC, while Lucas di Grassi also serves as co-founder, as well as sustainability ambassador for the series.

Entertaining Format

Ten teams made up the 2022 season of the category, with each team having three drivers at its disposal split between men and women for each event. The race format was based on a knockout series with the top 4 advancing to the quarterfinals. After that, the top three secured a ticket to the semifinals.

Subsequently, the top three in the semifinals competed for glory in the finals, with a total of 11 drivers in the decisive stage of each weekend. There, they worked under the format of a drivers’ championship and a teams’ championship.

The first race was held in London, the city selected to host the debut of the eSkootr Championship, reflecting a 600-meter course, which went in and out of Printworks London, seeing how the S1-X transited at more than 100 kilometers per hour.

Indeed, S1-X was the official name of the electric racing scooter, developed by YCOM, capable of reaching the aforementioned speed, equipped with a 1.33 kWh battery, flax fiber bodywork, weighing 40 kilograms in total and tilting capacity of up to 55°.

Matis Neyroud made history as the first winner of an eSkootr Championship race, Sara Cabrini also shone as the first woman to win a race in the series, while, finally, Aymard Vernay remained forever in the history books as the first champion.

When the creation of the eSkootr Championship was announced, expectations were immediately raised. Races on electric scooters, something totally new to what we are used to seeing in motorsports, which took on greater value and importance by addressing sustainable issues as a fundamental pillar of the category.

Months passed while the series prepared details, finalized technical aspects and gave life to the championship. The first tests arrived and the attention was total, given that in collaboration with YCOM, the S1-X was developed, the official scooter of the category, which reaches more than 100 kilometers per hour.

Riders from all over the world in various disciplines tested to be selected. Only 30 remained and the debut campaign kicked off in London, United Kingdom, with a race that far exceeded expectations.

A Successful Season

Then, the competition moved to Sion, Switzerland, for another exciting race that left the championship open for the next destinations, such as Spain or the United States, which could not be fulfilled for various reasons. There, the championship was halted for several months until the announcement of a double closing date in France.

“We are indebted to our drivers, teams, host cities and broadcasters who have helped make this first eSC season an incredible success. From our debut race on the streets of London to the finale in Marseille, everyone associated with eSC, from the staff to our partners, can be proud of their hard work and efforts to make 2022 a truly memorable season,” said Hrag Sarkissian, Co-Founder and CEO of eSkootr Championship.

“It has been incredible to see how our drivers have adapted to racing in the S1-X. It is thanks to their skill, athleticism and professionalism that they have been able to make the transition from their different sports to eSC,” commented Khalil Beschir, Co-Founder and COO of eSkootr Championship, in closing.

The eSkootr Championship (eSC) will return to action during the month of November after announcing the return of the series for two races in France to mark the end of the 2022 debut season.

The 100% electric scooter category is currently on hold after two races (London and Sion). On the way to the third event, the championship was suspended, so the organizers had to readjust the calendar.

However, the weeks went by without knowing when eSC would return, until now. The inaugural season will close with a double race at the mythical Paul Ricard circuit on November 9 and 10.

“I can’t wait for this double header to take place and to be able to crown the first winner of the eSkootr Championship. After the exciting races we’ve already had, I have no doubt that the title showdown at Paul Ricard will be just as exciting,” said Hrag Sarkissian, CEO and Co-Founder of eSC.

The circuit will be perfect for the closing of the eSkootr Championship as it is the first track to receive the FIA’s Sustainability Accreditation top honor award, making it an ideal place to compete and end a season that seeks to promote micro-mobility and sustainable transport through sport.

About eSkootr Championship

eSC is a new format of sport and entertainment for a new generation that reinvents racing and inspires a new movement for safer, more sustainable racing and more livable cities.

The first round of the championship took place in London in May 2022, where spectators and viewers from around the world got their first taste of the multi-level eSC event experience.

The protagonists compete on the specially designed S1-X electric scooter, which has been developed by YCOM and is powered by a Williams Advanced Engineering battery to reach speeds in excess of 100 km/h (62 mph).

One of the sustainable categories debuting in 2022 was the eSkootr Championship (eSC): the first 100% electric scooter series that aims to promote sustainability and culture for micro-level transportation.

One of its behind-the-scenes players is Paul Trafford, the category’s medical director, who represents the United Kingdom before the International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) Medical Commission. He also has experience in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), being qualified to be in charge of all medical requirements related to the competitors who will contest the scooter championship.

“Rider safety is our first priority, so we are delighted that one of the most experienced experts in the field of motorsport medicine has joined the eSC. Dr. Trafford, or ‘Traff’ as he is known in paddocks around the world, will lead our medical operations and work closely with our safety and research teams,” said Khalil Beschir, co-founder and COO of eSkootr Championship following the announcement of his inclusion in the series’ startup.

Paul Trafford’s Other Functions

In addition to the roles described above, Dr. Trafford will also place special focus on the training and health programs designed for young competitors, while developing ambitious new scenarios for the future of the electrified category. On the other hand, safety research issues will be addressed by him alongside recognized experts in the field such as Andy Mellor and Peter Wright.

eSkootr Championship is not only an exciting new sporting challenge for me, but also a unique opportunity to offer knowledge and benefits on injury prevention for the rapidly growing micro-mobility sector. As the demand for these new personal mobility devices grows in cities around the world, eSC is uniquely positioned to provide research results with significant real-world relevance and value,” Dr. Paul said when he joined the category.

The status of the eSkootr Championship

Currently, two races of the debut season have been contested, but for unknown reasons the series postponed the third race, and thus was forced to rearrange the rest of the schedule, which has not been confirmed at this time.

eSkootr Championship is in its debut season. After many months of preparation, it debuted on the circuits as the first and only 100% electric scooter category, fulfilling a sustainable objective that goes far beyond the competition of the automotive sector.

However, a few weeks ago it issued a statement that suddenly stopped the action of the series, as it announced changes in the calendar for the current season. Due to unforeseen circumstances, eSC postponed the third round, which was to be held in Italy from July 15 to 16 in a city to be announced.

Shooting the race on Italian soil affected the rest of the schedule, leaving other previously selected locations such as the United States and Spain without a confirmed date.

“It’s a shame to have to postpone our third event, even if only for a few weeks. We continue to work closely with local authorities and other stakeholders, including our teams and partners, on plans for later in the summer,” Hrag Sarkissian, Co-Founder and CEO of eSkootr Championship, said at the time, via a press release

Almost a month has passed since the competition was due to take place in Italy. However, so far there is no official confirmation from eSkootr Championship about the return of the championship, which saw Matis Neyroud win the debut race in London, UK, while Sara Cabrini did the same in Sion, Switzerland.

Thus, fans, competitors and teams of the series are looking forward to the return of the category that seeks to promote sustainability, adoption of micromobility through scooters, as well as gender equality as fundamental pillars that are part of the principles of eSC.

Sport has the power to positively influence people. That is one of the missions of the eSkootr Championship (eSC) to contribute to reversing the effects of climate change, which are becoming more and more evident worldwide, especially in Europe.

The 100% electric scooter championship was born with the aim of using its platform to show what is happening to the planet, send a message of awareness and seek solutions to prevent the environmental temperature from continuing to rise. Precisely, the ravages of heat hit the European continent hard.

eSC reveals that temperatures in Europe have reached record highs of 47 degrees Celsius in Spain and Portugal, while in France 16,000 people had to leave their homes as a result of forest fires that destroyed more than 14,000 hectares of land.

On the other hand, London experienced temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius after the Met Office issued a red warning of extreme heat. It is worth noting that in the capital of England, eSkootr Championship held its first race.

The heat is impacting Europe as well as other parts of the world. According to the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, the last three years have been the hottest on record, where António Guterres, UN Secretary General, was quite clear about what is happening: “We have a choice. Collective action or collective suicide. It is in our hands.”

This scenario must be changed quickly for the benefit of the planet. There, eSkootr Championship does its bit in promoting sustainable practices and education about scooters and micromobility, how important they can become for transportation and how they can be taken advantage of.

The championship is part of the United Nations Climate Neutral Now initiative (UNFCCC), which aims to achieve climate neutrality by measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions, where the category managed to receive recognition as the first sports championship to receive Triple Silver in the framework. In addition, since its inception in March 2022, eSC has been carbon neutral.

eSkootr Championship announced through an official press release that the calendar for the inaugural 2022 season will undergo changes regarding the third race, which was scheduled to take place in Italy during the month of July (15-16). However, due to unforeseen circumstances this will no longer be the case.

The 100% electric scooter championship is going strong after two high-impact races that have generated excitement, capturing the attention of motorsport, which will have to wait a little longer to see the S1-X compete on Italian soil, since the competition authorities have postponed the event to August.

As a result, the second half of the season will also be affected, where the remaining dates will also undergo changes, which will be known over time once the relevant logistical adjustments are executed.

It should be noted that the first woman to win an eSC race is Italian, Sara Cabrini, so racing in that nation will generate a positive impact for the series, the driver and of course, the locality that will host the sustainable competition.

“It’s a shame to have to postpone our third event, even if only for a few weeks. We continue to work closely with local authorities and other stakeholders, including our teams and partners, on plans for later this summer,” said Hrag Sarkissian, Co-Founder and CEO of eSkootr Championship.

In addition to Cabrini, multiple stakeholders have a lot to do with Italy, such as the Helbiz team along with technical partners YCOM, developer of the S1-X scooter, Bcomp and PMT Tires, who are based there. Finally, we will have to wait for the announcements made by the organization in the coming weeks to know the outcome of the first season, which has five races scheduled.

From June 23 to 26, the 2022 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed was held in the United Kingdom, where eSkootr Championship (eSC) stood out with its participation in the event, exhibiting the S1-X, attracting the attention of those present and generating greater awareness about the purposes of the series that is going through its debut season.

This festival is considered the largest motorsport event in the United Kingdom and one of the best in the world. Each year, various representatives of motorsport are present during the four days of the event to showcase their innovations and delight fans with races on site.

eSC had the presence of its professional drivers at Goodwood: Elise Christie, Tre Whyte, Nicci Daly, Dan Brooks, Jordan Rand and Danny Skinner got on the S1-X to demonstrate all the capabilities that this scooter has to give, reaching more than 100 kilometers per hour with excellent aerodynamic grip.

Undoubtedly, Goodwood Festival of Speed served as a perfect window to expose the reasons that led to the creation of eSC: Promote micromobility in a sustainable way, expose the safety factors that entails, in addition to generating a new competition series worldwide.

Two races have been held so far. The first of these was held in London, representing a debut in style for the scooter division, with Swiss Matis Neyroud winning the first race of the series. Then, in Sion, Switzerland, Sara Cabrini drove superbly to become the first woman to win an eSC race.

Now, the action will move to Italy, as the third race of the sustainable championship will take place from July 15 to 16, where the city that will host the drivers is yet to be announced.

Two races contested so far but with a long way to go. eSkootr Championship has been known for its sustainable commitment from the moment its creation was announced, now, after months of preparation and two battles held in London and Sion, respectively, the electric scooter division has been awarded triple silver recognition through the Climate Neutral Now initiative of the United Nations (UN).

This distinction recognizes the category’s efforts in measuring, reducing and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions, where the initiative aims to encourage companies and organizations to better understand their carbon footprint in order to create measures and plans that contribute to reducing their impact on the planet.

There are three levels of recognition: Bronze, Silver and Gold, where the program is supported by companies and organizations such as Microsoft, Sony, Juventus Football Club, SailGP and the ABB FIA Formula E. In the case of eSkootr Championship, it has been part of Climate Neutral Now since February 2021.

The silver award has highlighted the emissions reduction strategy with interim targets for the upcoming seasons of the series and carbon footprint offsetting in the inaugural campaign.

“Creating a sustainable sport that can have a real-world impact is one of the key areas of focus for eSC, so achieving a triple silver award from the UNFCCC in the first year is a great moment in our development,” said Hrag Sarkissian, Co-Founder and CEO of eSkootr Championship.

One of the series’ challenges has been to promote safety values, encourage micromobility and drive home the critical role that these types of vehicles will play in terms of transportation, both now and in the future, where a report to be published by the end of June 2022 on the lifecycle of the S1-X, the official scooter of the championship, will be highlighted.

“The eSC triple silver award is a testament to our strong data-driven sustainability strategy. We want to use the power of sport to implement change and we set out with the goal of working towards a greener and healthier environment for all,” said Lucas di Grassi, Co-Founder and Sustainability Ambassador of the championship.

Representing Team Carlin, Anish Shetty leads the eSkootr Championship standings after two races, and although he hasn’t won yet, he has been solid on the S1-X in both London and Sion, hinting that an eventual victory is very close at hand.

Originally from Bengaluru, India, Shetty has experience in motorcycles, now adapting his knowledge to a high-performance electric scooter to achieve a podium finish in the first race of the championship and a fourth place in Switzerland, where he is solid for the third round of the competition, in Italy.

The 27-year-old Indian has adapted quickly to the S1-X that exceeds 100 kilometers per hour, taking into consideration that he had never before had experience aboard a scooter with so much power, so he was able to turn his experience on motorcycles into a skill to be fast on track before a totally new challenge.

Related content: Sara Cabrini and Her Epic Battle to Win eSkootr Championship: “No, This Time You’re Not Passing Me!”

It may be that his physical condition plays a key role in being fast on track, given that last year he won the distinction of “Asia’s Fittest Man”, thanks to his success at the Cross Fit Open Championships. Shetty describes himself as self-motivated and ready to succeed in this new challenge of sustainable sports.

At the age of 15 he showed an interest in motorcycles after acquiring his first bike, where fate led him to racing after visiting a local garage. By the age of 17 he was a star, recording more than 20 top-three results in just over 18 months, where a series of steps has led him to Carlin and eSkootr Championship.

“Carlin is very well known in motorsports and all the engineers and people on the team have been amazing. I’ve definitely learned a lot in terms of racing and discipline, as well as how they run their team,” Shetty said before mentioning what he feels needs to improve going forward.

“They have great strategists and we execute ideas well. Now, the only thing I need to work on is improving my riding skills. This is the first time I am riding scooters as there are no such vehicles on the roads in India. This is one area I really want to work on,” he concluded.
