The arrival of 2023 represents yet another season for the WES World e-Bike Series, the 100% electric bike category that offers action in various European countries, naturally incredible scenery and top-level riders fighting for competition glory.

Last season saw Nicole Göldi and Jérôme Gilloux crowned champions in their respective categories, after a demanding calendar that was more disputed in the women’s category, but still gave hundreds of emotions as the races went by.

In that sense, the great 2022 season only leaves room for a better battle in 2023. In view of this, know how would be the possible calendar of WES World e-Bike Series facing a new campaign of the 100% electric bike racing category.

Undoubtedly, what will be virtually certain is that the 2023 season will start in Monaco, the home of WES. It has always been like that, therefore, there is no indication that they will change the tradition of starting there. Thus, a new battle for glory could begin in April or May.

Then, other nations present in the WES schedule would be back, such as Italy (Bologna-Montana), Spain (Costa Brava-Girona), France (Charade/Clermont-Ferrand) and Belgium, the latter also appears as a safe scenario after the agreement between the category and the mythical Formula 1 circuit, Spa Francorchamps.

The WES UCI E-MTB XC World Cup continued its action this weekend in Girona, Spain, with another double day of racing that again saw Nicole Göldi (Trek) consolidate her position as the best rider on the course, while on the men’s side Jérôme Gilloux (Lapierre) and Joris Ryf (Bergstrom) split honors.

For Saturday’s competition, Göldi and Guilloux were the fastest qualifiers to claim the Raspini Pole Position. Nicole started confidently and gradually increased her lead despite the fact that it would not be an easy race, especially with Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized) chasing her throughout the course.

On the other hand, Jérôme got off to a solid start and stayed that way to triumph, once again so far in the 2022 World Cup to consolidate his lead in the overall rider standings with full authority.

Second Race

Saturday’s events were behind us, as a new competition was about to begin. On the women’s side nothing changed as Nicole Göldi was steady again despite crashing on the first lap, losing valuable time which she recovered to win again in the Costa Brava-Girona round.

Now, the men’s race saw something that had never happened so far in WES 2022, “the fall of Jérôme Gilloux“. For the first time, the Frenchman from Lapierre did not win the race, as Joris Ryf started with speed, took the first corner in first place and did not get off until he triumphed.

Jérôme Gilloux (Photo: WES)

Göldi thus leads the women’s standings with 213, followed by Sofia Wiedenroth (169) and Justine Tonso (143). Despite not winning, Jérôme Gilloux remains the undisputed leader in the men’s standings with 230 points, followed by Joris Ryf (157) and Ismael Esteban Agüero (83).

Finally, where the next race will be held again in Spain, but this time in Barcelona, on October 15.

Through the official social networks of the World e-Bike Series (WES), it became known the participation of the category in the Sports for Climate Action campaign of the United Nations.

“WES has joined the Sports for Climate Action for the future of the sports we love and the evolution of electric sports!”, assures the 100% electric bike division via Instagram.

This initiative developed by the UN aims to invite and welcome all sports organizations that are willing to join as part of the action that seeks to reverse the effects of climate change globally.

(Photo: WES)

As an electric bike racing category, WES promotes the use of this means of transportation, in addition to transmitting sportsmanship, speed, power and wheel-to-wheel competition in each of its races.

Throughout the WES World Cup, several locations host two races per event, where the circuits are designed exclusively by the organization of the series, and even after the end of the competition, they leave the place in better condition than it was before.

Sports for Climate Action

Through sports it is possible to generate a really significant change in people, since without leaving aside the excitement of racing, competitiveness and rivalry, a message of sustainability, good practices and habits necessary to achieve the transition to a greener planet is transmitted.

Nicole Göldi will arrive at Spa-Francorchamps as provisional leader of the WES World e-Bike Series 2022 after consolidating her reliability on the electric bike and achieving good results in Bologna and Clermont-Ferrand. Therefore, she will start as one of the favorites to dominate the mythical Belgian circuit.

In the previous race (Clermont-Ferrand) she took everything during the weekend. Saturday’s competition witnessed several fights on the track that did not prevent Trek’s Swiss rider from crossing the finish line in first position.

“Yes, it was a very hard race, I had some battles with the girls but I liked it. In the end it was good. Tomorrow the weather will be a bit warmer than today, so we’ll see how it turns out,” Göldi expressed on Saturday’s race, knowing that the task wasn’t over yet on French soil.

Sunday came and she came back to race with everything. Starting from pole position she lost the position but then fought back against Lapierre Overvolt’s Justine Tonso to recover and win again. “It was a very tough race. It was about not making so many mistakes, it worked out for me and I finally got it,” commented Göldi on dominating a weekend in full.

“There is still a long way to go in the fight for the world championship,” concluded the Swiss rider, who rightly leads the standings with 113 points, just two points ahead of her closest rival, Justine Tonso (111). The table is now set for the double-header at Spa-Francorchamps, to be held from September 3 to 4, in Belgium.

In the blink of an eye, WES World e-Bike Series has disputed three great races in the 2022 season, which has had diverse scenarios, winners and events that mark an interesting journey, which prepares to visit one of the most historic and mythical circuits of motorsports: Spa-Francorchamps.

The circuit serves as a witness of multiple important motorsport categories, such as Formula 1, being special and even catalogued by many as the best track to compete at high speed. Its mythical curves such as Raidillion and Eau-Rouge stand out as the most popular areas of the design.

Belgium will next host the WES from September 3-4, where electric bikes will take over the venue to challenge the riders and put vital points at stake for the individual and rider championships. France’s Jérôme Gilloux and Switzerland’s Nicole Göldi lead their respective categories ahead of the competition in Belgium.

Another double date will mark Round 4 of the World Cup, which could certainly extend Gilloux’s lead in the championship and begin to define things, while the women’s side could change leader or extend the battle in a close manner, given that Göldi recently assaulted the lead in the hands of Justine Tonso.

The official circuit that the riders will ride will be announced at a later date, but there is already anticipation for WES’s visit to Belgium to race at Spa-Francorchamps.

The third round of the WES World e-Bike Series took place at the Charade Circuit in Clermont-Ferrand, where Nicole Göldi, Joris Ryf and Jérôme Gilloux were the weekend’s winners after two intense races on a truly demanding French track that brought out the best in them during the six laps of each race.

Under a bright sun, Saturday July 23 welcomed the riders for the first race of the weekend, where Göldi and Ryf took the Raspini Pole Position and then went on to ratify the victory. The Trek rider remained solid throughout the course to clinch her second victory of 2022, which had come in Bologna.

On the other hand, the men’s section lived a totally different scenario in race 1. The lead changed constantly in the first three laps, offering a luxury show in Clermont-Ferrand, where Ryf (Specialized/Bikebox) was climbing little by little to place himself in second position to then attack Hugo Pigeon after a final sprint that left a photo finish on the Charade circuit.

Race 2

What happened on Saturday was left behind, a new day was in charge of leading a new race where everything had to be left out. The women’s competition again saw Nicole Göldi, the reigning world champion take pole position for the third time in six races, and then clinch yet another victory (her third) with an incredible pace on track that helped her recover after being overtaken by Justine Tonso.

The men’s race once again featured an old acquaintance as pole position and victory owner: Jérôme Gilloux, who until race 1 at the Charade Circuit had come in flawlessly with all the available wins to his credit. In this race, he was also beaten at the start but then recovered to lead the race from the second lap on.

Thus, three winners for four races leave expectations for the next WES race, which will be held at a mythical motorsport circuit: Spa-Francorchamps, from September 3-4 in Belgium.

The 2022 season of the WES World e-Bike Series has so far featured two high-impact races that set the stage for a battle that will extend throughout the calendar. Precisely, the electrified bike division is preparing to face its third adventure scheduled to take place in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

The Charade Circuit will receive riders from July 23 to 24, who will seek to achieve the best possible result in French territory, although it will not be easy, since both the men’s and women’s categories have two candidates who are firm in their riding style, race pace and physical strength.

They are the Frenchmen Jérôme Gilloux and Justine Tonso. Both defend the Lapierre Overlot team colors and will try to finish again on the top of the podium, this time with the added bonus of racing at home, although they should not be confident despite looking like favorites for the next event of the season.

WES World e-Bike Series so Far

Gilloux and Tonso got off on the right foot in 2022 by conquering Monaco. They both took the two wins during the race weekend and were on all cylinders for the next event: Bologna. There, Jérôme was strong on the course to take all possible points for the second time in a row.

Justine was the favorite for both races, she had the pace to win both times but a problem with her electric bike’s saddle forced her to abandon Saturday’s race and Nicole Göldi took advantage of this mishap to claim the victory. However, on Sunday she “took revenge” for the problem she suffered and crossed the finish line in first position.

The second round of the WES World e-Bike Series was held in Bologna, Italy, where motorcycling World Champion Dani Pedrosa was on site to test the race track, as well as spend time with fans who came to the area to share with the two-wheeled legend.

With Pedrosa giving his approval of the track, the double date took place in Italian territory where Jérôme Gilloux dominated from start to finish the weekend of action, obtaining all the possible points. On the other hand, the women’s section divided honors between Justine Tonso and Nicole Göldi.

“It was a really difficult race, very close over the finish but fun, although it was not easy to overtake on this circuit, but somehow it was possible,” asserted Göldi, winner of Race #1 in Bologna.

“An amazing race, I really enjoyed this track ideal for electric bikes, very technical, where controlling the speed and the lines was not easy. I had a little problem on the track but I was able to handle it in a calm way, I took the right part without losing speed,” Gilloux sentenced before highlighting what he liked most about the circuit. “I loved this track, which is fast, with long descents and difficult to climb. I’m happy to win the second round of the season here in Bologna.

On the other hand, Tonso commented on what the second race was like for her, given that in the first one she was left empty-handed after breaking the seat of her electrified bike. “Qualifying was good, I felt great, even though the race conditions were tricky and muddy, but it’s fun for me because I’m from the south of France, so I seem to quite like the weather and these conditions,” she said with a laugh before highlighting the incident in Race #1. “It’s like a little revenge (winning Race #2) for my broken saddle, so I’m quite happy.”

With an expectant preview under the watchful eye of motorcycling champion Dani Pedrosa, the WES World e-Bike Series had a great weekend in Bologna-Montana, where the second meeting of the 2022 season of the UCI E-Mountain Bike World Cup 2022 took place, with Jérôme Gilloux, Nicole Göldi and Justine Tonso as the main protagonists.

On May 28 took place the first of the double event scheduled on Italian soil. 17.5 kilometers distributed in 5 counterclockwise laps and 1,242 meters of elevation brought together the riders during a demanding course, which saw the Frenchman from Lapierre Overlot dominate from start to finish in the men’s section.

Although the original schedule called for 6 laps, Race Control decided to make it 5, where Jérôme Gilloux and Nicole Göldi (Trek) were the ones who started in the place of honor after winning the qualirace, and therefore, the Pole Position Powered by Raspini.

On the women’s side, Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized) went ahead of Göldi and took the lead of the race, dominating most of the competition (4 out of 5 laps), but suffering an onslaught from the reigning world champion after a great sprint at the end, winning her first WES race.

Justine Tonso was going well in the fight until she broke her seat on lap three, being forced to withdraw from the fight after shining with authority in the inaugural double-header held in Monaco-Peille.

Bologna-Montagne: Race 2

Same course, but this time clockwise. The men’s side again saw a great race by Lapierre Overlot’s Frenchman Jérôme Gilloux, who once again started from pole position, taking all possible points (50) during the weekend in Bologna-Montagne.

In the women’s race, Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized) repeated her first starting position, but this time there was no broken saddle to prevent Justine Tonso from making up for what she lost on Saturday, winning Sunday’s competition, followed by Switzerland’s Nathalie Schneitter (Trek) and the German from Specialized.

Tonso thus leads the general classification of riders with 75 points, followed by Nathalie Schneitter (69) and Sofia Wiedenroth (67) to complete the top three. On the other hand, Jérôme Gilloux appears with a perfect score (100) at the top of the table, in second place is Swiss Loïc Noël (57), while in third position is Frenchman Hugo Pigeon (40).
