One of the new and sustainable categories coming to motorsports will be Airspeeder, a 100% flying car series preparing for its debut, where Bruno Senna will be part of the team as a driver and strategist in the development of the competition.

Several prototype vehicles have been built and tested as part of the preparation for the series’ debut. However, for the former Formula 1 driver it will still be a “journey” despite his debut, and he made this known at Airspeeder’s participation in the past Goodwood Festival of Speed.

“It is a journey. It’s not so simple to explain, but basically we are developing a platform so you can race externally, that is, remotely or VR, so you get a great feeling of what it’s like to be inside, but from the outside,” Senna sentenced.

A Long Road

To make this possible they have carried out the development of a complete platform that includes the battery, propellers and of course the vehicle itself, and although the first season will be remotely, for the second season it is expected that the pilots will be inside the car during the races.

“In a racing series, like this one, the main goal is to fly inside the Airspeeder, so I think it’s going to be amazing going forward. It’s a journey, from here there’s a lot to learn still but we’re on our way,” he assured.

About Airspeeder

Airspeeder’s vision will deliver one of the most exciting and future-focused motorsports on the planet. After an inaugural unmanned season, elite pilots will take to the skies to race propeller to propeller while navigating electronically governed circuits in the clouds of some of the world’s most compelling landscapes. These manned multi-rotor electric vehicles will define a new era in advanced air mobility (AAM).

The first Airspeeder unmanned aerial race is scheduled for 2022 and will feature a full grid of multi-rotor racing craft, the Airspeeder Mk4. Top drone racing pilots will use the latest RPAS (remotely piloted aircraft systems) in aerial battles around the world.

Airspeeder announced through its social networks the completion of 250 flight tests as part of its preparation for the debut season of the series called the first 100% electric category of flying vehicles, where the journey that began in June 2020 with the MK3C developed by Alauda Aeronautics was extended through the months to reach 250 tests.

From takeoff tests, landing, side-by-side competition, components such as the engine and so on, the series has gone step by step to make the debut a reality, which will first be unmanned as a final test and then give entry to driving from the inside, increasing the sensitivity and competitiveness among participants.

The Airspeeder creation seeks to convey all the power, technology and confidence that can be obtained through electrified cars, while at the same time completely innovating in automotive matters, taking the racing action to the skies amidst the sustainable promotion they have outlined as a fundamental pillar.

Alauda Aeronautics’ Proposal

“The design of the Airspeeder is based on British Formula 1 racing cars of the 1960s. Alauda is pioneering the future of motor racing with the Airspeeder, whose main objective is to accelerate the development of electric flying aircraft by placing them in a competitive environment,” states the Australian company in charge of developing the official car of the series.

Defined as “the first coupe in the sky”, the MK4 will be able to reach 80 mph during air races, even with brief moments of pure power at 155 mph competing for lapses of approximately 10 minutes (maybe a little more), given that the batteries provide 15 minutes of energy during the competition, being necessary to stop in pits.

A few months ago, Airspeeder announced that Bruno Senna would be part of the 100% electric flying car championship. His role within the organization will be linked to the technical and dynamic development of the Speeders that will be part of the competition.

Initially, Airspeeder will debut with unmanned vehicles, then, it is expected that for the second season of the series, the pilots will be aboard the Alauda Aeronautics Mk4, the vertical take-off and landing flying car that will be the main protagonist of the organization.

During this transition process, Bruno Senna will be important. With experience in Formula 1 and Formula E, the Brazilian will combine his passion for speed and racing to contribute alongside engineers who have spent time at Ferrari, McLaren, Airbus, Boeing, Rolls-Royce, and are now at Airspeeder.

Ahead of this new venture, Senna revealed what led him to become part of this new sustainable racing sport: “I grew up being crazy about cars, I wanted to own them, to drive them. So this passion for racing would be more interesting when they are flying,” says the Brazilian driver.

Bruno Senna (Photo: Airspeeder)

Since 2014, he discloses that he delved into the world of drones, awakening an incredible passion for this type of devices and racing vehicles. “I guess flying and being fast is in my blood,” he noted before revealing the key point to join.

“One of the things that really inspired me about Airspeeder was the technology section. I’m a tech nerd, like developing things and being part of a team that develops fast cars, so going to the air side and understanding how all these systems work that make eVTOL fly fast…I couldn’t be more excited.”

Also, he assures that it will be a challenge to control the racing lines, know where the other flying cars will be located and control the factors of a race, with the particularity that he will not be inside the Airspeeder eVTOL, generating an exciting challenge for him.

“As a race driver I have always been inside the car and to achieve to extract the maximum level I have used all my senses, so before going to the flying vehicle to do it remotely, I think it will take a lot of practice, too many hours in the simulator to be well prepared to the dynamics of the car, where the limitations are and so know how far to go.”

Alauda Aeronautics is the company responsible for designing, manufacturing and delivering in optimal conditions the Mk3C Speeder, the vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL) that will give life to Airspeeder, an aerial electric car competition that is in preparation for its official debut. Expectations are high, however, and even more so when the opinion of Eric Freund, Senior Engineer at the company, became known after assuring that the batteries of eVTOLs can offer more power than a sports car.

“One of the big claims about eVTOLs and any type of vertical air vehicle that people don’t realize is that they use an immense amount of power. The batteries have to be able to discharge energy at such a rate that they easily deliver more power than a sports car, and that amount of energy is difficult to store in a small space,” Freund asserted.

The system Eric describes has two modules in each battery, which allows for redundancy while flying high or low. In addition, if it should fail for any reason, the eVTOL will keep flying, ensuring the safety of the pilot and the craft.

“Most of our work has been based on minimizing the weight and content of the structure,” said Freund, who is working on the modular battery system exploring new technologies that can be applied to the air vehicle.

Precisely, so much power delivery causes the batteries to discharge quickly, so Alauda Aeronautics is looking for ways to solve the situation when it comes time to race. Seeing how to handle pit stops and battery replacements will be an interesting challenge for Eric and his entire team.

For the first season, the Airspeeder flying cars will be operated remotely, however, for the second campaign the action will be face-to-face with experienced pilots inside the Mk3C Speeder, so the safety aspects provided by Alauda Aeronautics will also be of utmost importance.

If 2021 left Airspeeder with anything, it is the certainty that the world’s first series of electric flying cars is no longer utopia, and is getting closer to reality.

Three unmanned races were held during the year, as it is still too early to risk putting a pilot in the vehicle, while experts continue to collect data to optimize the development of the MK3 regarding speed, reliability and safety.

Back in August, the innovative category unveiled official footage from the first flight, showing the audience the first-person view experience of the craft.

Airspeeder successfully took over the skies with the official full-scale unmanned expeditions of the electric Alauda Mk3, in South Australian airspace. The prototype was manufactured by Alauda Aeronautic, the company responsible for all the technology to be used in the tournament.

These historic first flights were under the scrutiny of the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Throughout the development process, the Alauda team worked with the regulator to ensure compliance with all required procedures, while developing robust safety protocols.

Speeds Achieved

In September, Airspeeder reported that during a new test session, the driverless prototype was able to reach a speed of 93 kilometers per hour.

At the time, the category detailed that despite the power level, the sound of the flying car was still being refined.

Two Vehicles in the Air

After the second round of testing, Airspeeder launched a pair of prototypes into the Australian skies to deliver the closest thing to a car-to-car competition. The test was successfully completed, according to the company. The unmanned prototype test flight, over a site near Adelaide, South Australia, marked the first time two units took off together.

In November, organizers put two Alauda Aeronautics teams head-to-head as an advance development series of the eVTOL Grand Prix in 2022, and a global competition league in 2023. This expedition marked, not only the first eVTOL race, but also a turning point for pre-season testing.

Aispeeder executives claim that what they advanced in 2021 offers the world a glimpse into the next generation of motorsport and mobility, and represents a significant moment for the creation of the sport, as well as being a major step forward for the development of electric flying cars.

The series plans to launch the official league in 2023 and have 10 teams from around the world competing with drivers in the Speeders. It is currently on its Series A funding round and already has investments from partners such as NVIDIA and Telstra.

Speaking at the second edition of the Green Racing Virtual Summit, Jack Withinshaw, Airspeeder’s Chief Commercial Officer noted that the series “is taking electric sports to the sky.

Matt Pearson, CEO of the category, always dreamed of flying cars with pioneering TV shows like Star Wars, Back To The Future. Now, if you look at the market right now, there will be about 500 aerial vehicle companies, but we’re doing something totally different.”

He detailed that racing will always have a special place in any revolution of the automotive sector, highlighting that Airspeeder stands out on three specific areas: performance, safety and awareness.
