Beyond the excitement that Formula E unleashes as an innovative motorsport championship, its vision of leaving a sustainable legacy on a global scale and contributing to mitigating climate change has given it important spaces on the global agenda.

During the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2022 (COP27), the tournament’s promoters, together with leaders from other electric competitions, presented advances and offered views on the environmental crisis facing the planet.

On Thursday, November 10, Youth and Future Generations Day at the summit being held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, a panel discussion was held on motor racing’s unique ability to inspire a massive transition to zero-emission vehicles.

The forum was moderated by “UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action”, which supports sports organizations and their stakeholders to achieve climate change goals, with speakers from the FIA, Formula E and Envision Racing.

Specifically participating were Envision Racing Director, Sylvain Filippi; Barbara Silva, FIA Social Responsibility Manager and Formula E Sustainability Director, Julia Palle.

The Formula E Impact

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is an environment where high performance and sustainability coexist powerfully and its global popularity is growing rapidly, particularly among the most climate-conscious young people.

This year, things have taken a big sporting and technological leap forward with the launch of the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient new electric Gen3 race car ever built. Industry leaders spoke about the global perspective and motorsport’s contribution to addressing the climate crisis through technology and engagement with young fans.

“The future is electric. Formula E is a revolutionary sport that has experienced phenomenal growth globally in just eight seasons,” Filippi highlighted . “Through innovation, high performance and an active fan base, we are demonstrating what is possible and what to strive for,” he added.

He assured that participating in COP27 is essential because Formula E’s goal is to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and inspire positive climate action around the world.

For his part, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, explained that as the governing body of world motorsport, they seek to take a leadership role among sporting federations in the fight against global climate change and provide the frameworks to make this a reality.

“Our presence at COP27 is an important step in our journey to become net zero by 2030 as we accelerate the development and adoption of technologies and behaviors that can contribute to the decarbonization of the world,” he pointed out.

The new Porsche signing for season 9 of Formula E, Antonio Félix da Costa toured the brand’s headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, to learn about the technology with which they are working to become protagonists during the Gen3 era.

He toured the company’s museum, filled with title-winning race cars from its history, as well as the best city cars from its catalog.

In addition, da Costa went to the current production line of Porsche’s flagship EV: the Taycan, a car he now calls his own and with which he drove the 700 km to Zuffenhausen.

The champion of the 2019-2020 season expressed his motivation and will be actively involved in the development of the “Porsche 99X Electric Gen3” single-seater that he will use in the new Formula E stage, scheduled for next January’s opening day in Mexico.

“I can hardly wait,” he noted in statements released by the official site of the electrified series. “The team is working hard to make sure we have a successful start to the new season,” he added.

The Future is Electric

During his tour of the Porsche facilities, da Costa was able to corroborate the firm’s great project to consolidate itself as one of the leaders in the transition to electric mobility.

The Lusitanian pointed out that if he used to support the change and decarbonization of cars, now he is totally convinced that it is the way to a friendlier planet and the Development of new technologies.

“I always knew electric cars were the future, but this trip totally convinced me,” he said. “It’s great that Porsche is building cars like this. The Taycan has all of Porsche‘s DNA and combines performance and efficiency in a beautiful design.

He said he was “deeply impressed” by the professionalism and love of everyone working at the factory: “It is a pure reflection of the Porsche brand. The close connection between motorsport and road production is definitely one of the secrets of Porsche’s success,” he concluded.

Da Costa arrives at Porsche to replace Andre Lotterer, and has his sights set on leading the team to the top of the podium. He will be partnered by Pascal Wehrlein, who has assumed leadership within the team and already knows what it is like to win an E-Prix after dominating in Mexico.

After the confirmation of McLaren’s entry to Formula E, there are several pending accounts to know how the team will be put together for season 9, scheduled to start the Gen3 era.

What is known so far is that the company will enter the electric single-seater series with the license of Mercedes-EQ, which is leaving the circuit, but the development of the powertrain they will use and the drivers who will lead the team are still unclear.

As already happens in other competitions such as Formula 1 and Extreme E, it is estimated that McLaren will not develop its own structure in the car, so it is already in negotiations with other manufacturers that can supply it with this technology.

Paradoxically, in 2014, McLaren Applied Technologies manufactured the electric motor, transmission and electronic system that was installed in all Spark-Renault SRT 01E chassis that competed in Formula E, but now the British firm Greybull Capital is the one that has control over that entire division.

Strategy.

“We are taking a big step. We have to get the category and integrate Ian James (director) and the team. At the end of the day, we have a great partnership with Chevrolet in IndyCar and another great partnership with Mercedes in Formula 1. So having a powertrain other than McLaren is no problem. That’s how we approach motorsport,” stated McLaren CEO Zak Brown.

He pointed out that not applying their own structure will not be a problem, since, for example, in Formula 1 they have never used their own engine in the long history they have in motorsport’s top category.

Zak Brown, McLaren CEO

“We will let Ian James shape the future plans, but this issue seems clear. Ian James himself knows, so we will announce our technical partner, as well as the drivers and our partners and sponsors in due course,” added Brown.

Among the manufacturers being considered to supply technology to McLaren, Nissan has been strongly tipped as an option to formalize a deal to provide power units.

Regarding the drivers, the names of Mercedes representatives Stoffel Vandoorne and Nick de Vries were being considered. However, the former already has a previous agreement with DS Techeetah, while the reigning champion will continue his course outside the street circuits.

As part of the third edition of the virtual meeting organized by Green Racing News, Julia Pallé, Sustainability Director of Formula E, was part of the experts who addressed various topics regarding sustainable motorsports under the leadership of Juan Morán, Global Customer Director.

From its inception to the current eighth season, the category has grown exponentially over the years. Now, it is preparing to welcome a new batch of third-generation vehicles that will come into effect as of the next edition of the championship.

Greater power, efficiency, speed and lower impact. The Formula E car will bring a new racing concept, which hides a lot of activities performed off the track that are not seen in the race, but need to be highlighted.

“What is really unique about Formula E is that we were created with a purpose as the heart of the championship. The world doesn’t need racing series, it needs a competition that helps in the advancement of electrification of the streets, because we have a big challenge which is mobility and climate change, especially because of the emissions that mobility is causing in the world.”

Julia Pallé (Photo: Formula E)

In its beginnings, the maximum category of electric single-seaters to promote the technology that is driven around electrified vehicles. Now, after years of experience and prestige, it serves as the “test unit” for automakers who want and need to innovate in terms of mobility and transportation.

All the experience and window of exposure offered by Formula E has led them to the Gen3 car, which was launched a few days ago and will serve, from Julia Pallé’s perspective, as a stepping stone for motorsports as a pinnacle on what can be done on a racing, performance and sustainability level.

“The driving force of Formula E is to show that racing and reason can coexist without compromising (the environment). So that’s what this (Gen3) vehicle is about.”

Captivating the Mind, Heart and Soul of Fans

Pallé divides Formula E into two important elements: Racing excitement and sustainability. The first of these is obtained thanks to the competitiveness demonstrated on track with big names sitting in the car, who seek to be the champion at the end of each season, offering battles, tension, overtaking that lead fans to be captivated in mind, body and soul.

Second, internally, a sense of sustainability is cultivated due to all the initiatives and actions that Formula E executes, knowing that they can be part of something that benefits the planet in an imminent way by adopting small changes that derive in great solutions, such as using less plastic, recycling the one they have at home and consuming plant-based food, for example.

Manufacturers in the automotive industry are increasingly convinced that electric technology is the present and future within their activities. One of them is the British brand TVR, which has decided to bet on electromobility by sponsoring Formula E and announcing the production of electrified cars.

The company, which has been in a lurch in recent years, decided to relaunch itself with this new policy aimed at sustainable mobility. TVR considers that Formula E means a big step in its strategy, due to the important evolution that the tournament has had not only from a sporting point of view, but also because of its legacy in environmental matters.

In that sense, the CCO of Formula E, Matt Scammell expressed his enthusiasm for this alliance. “To see TVR, an iconic manufacturer of high-performance sports cars, cross over and make this commitment to electric is a significant milestone and aligned with Formula E’s vision of an electric future.”

He assured that TVR is a beloved brand and they look forward to working alongside the team in Monaco and London to showcase their electrification plans.”

For his part, Les Edgar, president of TVR stated that this strategic partnership not only demonstrates their commitment to revolutionize the brand, but also electric vehicles and become a sustainable business with zero net emissions.

“This move marks a turning point in the strategic direction of the iconic British manufacturer of high-performance sports cars as it accelerates its plans to electrify,” the executive stressed.

Formula E has attracted great interest from major companies that have decided to back the World Championship endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). In addition, the electric single-seater series enters an important stage from 2023 with the arrival of the Gen3 era, with a more powerful and technological vehicle.

Electrification of the brand

In addition to the announcement of sponsorship to Formula E, TVR is preparing the launch of an electric car for 2024, specifically its iconic Griffith.

TVR’s Griffith Model

To achieve that goal, the company will use a manufacturing system called “iStream Carbon”, designed by Gordon Murray, the engineer behind the legendary McLaren F1. This process allows carbon fiber to be manufactured at a lower cost than usual.

TVR will also work with South American company Ensorcia Metals, which specializes in Lithium mining, to finance the Griffith’s production and ensure the supply of cells for the brand’s future electric models, of which no technical details have yet been disclosed.

Despite being different competitions, the world of motorsport has sought to compare Formula E with F1. For the masterminds of the electric series, such as Alejandro Agag and Alberto Longo, both categories will eventually merge, while others, more pessimistic, see no future for the zero emissions championship.

The director of the Red Bull team in the top category, Christian Horner, declared that Formula E “does not work because it has almost no people, there is no noise, no passion. There is also no atmosphere and the manufacturers are withdrawing from the championship again”.

The ex-driver alluded to Mercedes, Audi and BMW’s departures, but did not refer to McLaren’s intentions to join, or the inclusion of Maserati for Season 9.

The truth is that the pronouncement has not gone down well in the electric single-seater series. Specifically, Porsche driver André Lotterer came out and responded to Horner. “Both series have the best talent, but on average there is more in Formula E because everyone is a professional and no one brings money with them. They have all earned their place through talent. Some drivers wouldn’t have a place in Formula 1 without their sponsor.”

André Lotterer, Porsche driver / Photo: Porsche

He noted that the two tournaments are two different worlds that cannot be compared. “The championship has a future and there are not many alternatives for manufacturers to introduce electric mobility. If it didn’t work, Formula E wouldn’t be here,” the German added.

FIA Endorsement

Despite the criticism, Formula E is heading into its first decade and with intentions to keep moving forward. Since season 7, the tournament has become a World Championship of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which clearly shows that Alejandro Agag’s idea has gone from being, for some, madness to a palpable reality.

Furthermore, a few years ago, the former President of the FIA, Jean Todt, approved a series of regulations at all levels so that the different competitions affiliated to the governing body of world motorsport would adopt sustainable practices, with the aim of reducing their emissions.

Formula E is not only a sporting tournament, but also leaves an important legacy in the destinations it visits, with the goal of promoting electromobility.

The E-Prix of Rome is closer and the Formula E drivers are already beginning to assess the circuit’s qualities, scheduled to host for the third time the event of the electric single-seater series.

With a length of 3,385 meters and 19 turns, the dell’EUR track could be an ideal candidate to become the flagship of the category, according to statements made by one of the most prestigious racers in the tournament, Lucas Di Grassi.

The Venturi Racing team representative compared the Roman track with the Macau circuit, an emblematic circuit for both single-seaters (F3) and GT cars (FIA GT World Cup). A large number of drivers who are now part of the world’s elite have passed through this venue.

Lucas Di Grassi (BRA), ROKiT Venturi Racing.

His Favorite Track

For Di Grassi, who won the Macau Formula 3 GP in 2005, the Italian dell’EUR is a “mini Macau” because it has some very similar qualities. “It has jumps, different asphalt with different grip, high-speed sections and heavy braking, all uphill and downhill,” he said.

“Rome is not only my favorite track, but probably the most difficult layout we have on the Formula E calendar. It’s like an old-fashioned track, full of imperfections that make it challenging,” he added.

Formula E Rome Circuit

Di Grassi also describes the circuit as “great” because it allows you to travel at a very high speed of around 240 kilometers per hour on the straight.

“You need to know where to push and where not to push. Just like in Macau, you need to develop your confidence as a driver and build up your pace. That’s the only way you can be fast,” he explained.

What to Expect in Rome?

As one of the longest tracks on the calendar, the Circuito Cittadino dell’EUR runs along the Obelisco di Marconi, against the backdrop of the iconic “Colosseo Quadrato”.

The layout was modified for season 7, but still features the challenging undulations, elevation changes, uneven surface and the famous jump. Now the track has longer and faster straights that offer opportunities for overtaking.

Next weekend, April 9-10, will be the joust for the eighth Formula E season calendar.

FIA Formula E season 7 is history. Now, the focus has been set on season 8 with several drivers promising to put on a real show when they get their hands behind the wheel. Lucas di Grassi has most of the spotlight, but there are other drivers to consider.

Precisely, a couple of “not so new rookies” tried (and are trying) to consolidate their name in order to be respected towards the future of the 100 electric single-seater category. They are Jake Dennis and Nick Cassidy, who will have another golden opportunity to consolidate all the knowledge acquired during their debut campaign.

Nick Cassidy

Envision Racing bet on Nick Cassidy for his arrival to the ABB FIA Formula E, and they were not wrong. The driver came to the category with several records (he won the Super GT, Formula 3 and Super Formula in Japan) under his belt that drew the attention, which is why he enjoys a place in the starting lineup.

Landing at Envision brought pressure, as he had to become Sam Bird’s replacement and live with it at every E-Prix of season 7. At the beginning, this certainly affected the New Zealander at the early rounds of the campaign, being overshadowed by his teammate Robin Frijns, but from the fourth stage onwards he made the necessary adjustments to beat his teammate by more than five seconds.

Nick Cassiy (Photo: ABB FIA Fórmula E)

After that performance, he had flashes, highs and lows, but the truth is that for the future there is much more to see from Nick Cassidy, and surely his name will sound louder on the press when the green flag is lowered next season.

Jake Dennis

He came to the FIA Formula E under the command of the BMW i Andretti team, (now Avalanche Andretti) although this was unexpected. However, he managed to turn the spotlight on him on more than one occasion by claiming a pole position and a victory, something that many drivers throughout the category have not been able to achieve during their first season.

Jake Dennis (Photo: FIA Fórmula E)

Of course, things had their good and bad moments, but the Englishman’s willingness to do things right earned him a deserved place as one of the team’s starting drivers with plenty to give at ABB FIA Formula E season 8. Both drivers will be a threat to the rest of the sustainable grid.

Getting the news of not being able to continue in Formula 1 must not have been easy. All drivers, or the vast majority dream to climb gradually until they reach the Grand Circus to compete with the best. Antonio Giovinazzi lived that dream for three seasons, but when Alfa Romeo decided not to continue with his services, that door was immediately closed.

The team opted to give a chance to Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou, while the Italian was excluded from the top category of world motorsport. However, after one obstacle, a new clear path presents itself. DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT saw a great talent in him and immediately started contacts to make him an ABB FIA Formula E driver.

It didn’t take long between saying goodbye to Formula 1 and receiving the FE; in fact, more than one was surprised by the quickness of the confirmation, but when a driver is really good, things like this happen. Now, after a great experience loaded with learning for Antonio Giovinazzi, a new beginning awaits him starting from the 2022 season of the electrified division.

The journey of Antonio Giovinazzi

Karting was part of his life between 2001 and 2012. There, he managed to claim victories from regional and local championships, and consequently, recognition and third-party gazes were not long in coming. Formula Pilot China was Giovinazzi’s next step in 2012, becoming champion after winning six times.

British Formula 3 followed the next year, being runner-up. The European Formula 3 also appeared on his young but promising career, scoring points in eight out of a possible 30 races.

Other categories such as Formula 3, GP” (now called Formula 2) and endurance championships were also challenges overcome by Antonio Giovinazzi until Formula 1 came along in 2017 as third driver of the Ferrari team. He made his Grand Circus debut for Sauber F1 Team at the first race of the year (Australian Grand Prix) after the accident suffered by Pascal Wehrlein during the Race of Champions.

In 2019, he became official driver for Alfa Romeo and there began the story that practically everyone knows. Several performances to highlight on the most recognized circuits in the world, having as teammate 2007 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen

Now, the journey into Formula E has begun, where Antonio Giovinazzi will have a lot to learn to get in tune, because on his first contact during preseason testing, the Italian said that driving the electric single-seater was not as easy as he expected. “I admit that it is especially complicated under braking, it was difficult for me to get used to this aspect. There is also no downforce, no noise. Everything is different”.

Italian Antonio Giovinazzi is one of the most glittering names to land on Formula E for season 8. The driver, still part of Alfa Romeo in Formula 1 signed with Dragon Penske and gave his first impressions of the electric series during the pre-season testing that took place in Valencia, Spain.

“I have to learn a lot of things very quickly, but I knew it would be like this and we are for that. Gradually, I’ve been feeling better in the car, and with more mileage will be even better,” he pointed out.

When asked about being placed at the back of the grid during testing, Giovinazzi was not worried, since as he progresses he will be more adapted for the debut at the end of January 2022.

Sitting for the first time at the wheel of the electric single-seater, the Italian explained that it is a totally different ride, which is nothing like GT, LMP2 or Formula 1. He admitted that it is “especially complicated when braking, it was difficult for me to get used to it in this aspect. There is also no downforce, no noise. Everything is different,” he said.

He will work with the simulator

Formula E is a high-level technological laboratory, so racers have the possibility to compete through simulators developed by the teams’ engineers.

In that sense, Giovinazzi pointed out that his plan is to work hard at the simulator to try to be at the highest level as soon as possible. Despite the fact that the adaptation time is very short, he assures that with the help of his staff he will sooner than later get up to speed for the debut.

“I am at the first phase and I will try to do my best. I want to complete a lot of work with the team’s simulator during December and January. It will be a difficult first part of the season, but we will work hard to be in good shape. I still have to finish Formula 1, there is not much time, but we will do as much work on the simulator as possible,” he added.

While Dragon Penske may not be one of the favorites on the Formula E grid, Giovinazzi is excited ahead of his new motorsport adventure. ” In Formula E there are usually different winners, it’s not like in F1 where you know that either Mercedes or Red Bull will win. I was motivated to compete on this championship, where nobody knows what is going to happen in the race. Dragon already did some podiums in the past and we are going to work together to achieve it again,” concluded the driver.
