The Monaco Circuit was mastered by Stoffel Vandoorne. The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team driver had an impeccable strategy that, despite the difficulties of losing his Attack Mode due to the Safety Car exit, helped him to win one of the most eagerly awaited E-Prix.

“I’m very excited, as I’ve been fighting very well all year. I had achieved poles, but not the victory. Today I was focused on getting the win and not the pole, and I got it,” said a satisfied Vandoorne shortly after the yachts around the circuit had sounded their horns.

Mitch Evans, who started from pole position, extending his good run after winning the double date in Rome on April 9-10, took second place.

At the end of the race, Evans noted that trying to save energy worked against his plans to take the podium. “We wanted to repeat what we achieved in the last two days, but second place is not bad at all.”

The lowest spot on the podium went to Jean-Éric Vergne, who was unchanged from his starting position.

Race Details

The first ten minutes of the race in the narrow streets of Monaco were completely normal, with no overtaking at the front of the grid. A lot of caution for the attack mode, which was used for the first time by Nick Cassidy. He was only able to move up one place starting from position 18 with the additional power activated, although he finally managed to score from sixth place.

While Wehrlein was stalking Evans with 31 minutes to go, at least six drivers in the middle of the field went into attack mode, with Antonio Felix da Costa making his way into the points.

After 20 minutes of racing, Wehrlein and Vergne took control of the race, alternating the first place, now with Evans in third place. Once the effects of the attack mode had subsided, Pascal Wehrlein was left in control of the race.

But bad luck would come for Pascal, with a mechanical failure that relegated him from the race, generating the waving of the yellow flags.

Once the race was back to normal, Vandoorne, Evans and Vergne made up the podium. The first of them would be unlucky, because just when he activated his attack mode, the safety car had to appear. Mitch, who was looking for the lead, had not yet used his extra power. There were 8 minutes to go.

There were no changes until the end. Evans activated his Attack Mode, but it was not enough to reach the top, dominated by the Belgian of Mercedes-EQ.

Below, you can find out how the Formula E leaderboard ended up after the Monaco race.

Porsche’s Contrast

The 1-2 achieved by the Tah Heuer Porsche Formula E Team drivers in Mexico was in stark contrast in Monaco. After Wehrlein’s departure due to mechanical failure, André Lotterer impacted in a corner, ending the aspirations of the team that hoped to be at the top.

Next Formula E stop

Berlin, Germany, will be the next destination for the Formula E World Championship 2022. During May 14 and 15, the competition will arrive at Tempelhof Airport for rounds 7 and 8, a regular destination for the series.

Green Racing News, the first news portal dedicated to zero-emission motorsports, announces its third virtual Summit in an English-language day that will be dedicated to addressing current events and the future of sustainable motorsport.

While Formula E is on the verge of its third generation of vehicles (Gen3) and Extreme E is consolidating its second season, new competitions such as eSkootr, E1 Series and Airspeeder are preparing their engines for what many define as the “Year of Zero Emission Motorsports”.

On May 5, the main representatives of green motorsport will gather on a series of prominent panels to talk about the experiences gained along their journeys on the tracks. In addition, spokespersons for the upcoming series will offer details about the respective premieres.

Manufacturers: The Origin of Zero-Emission Speed

Since the beginning of electric racing, different manufacturers, such as Porsche and Cupra, have set up teams to test the maximum performance of their technologies. All this, in the quest to bring the innovations they develop to the streets.

Thus, figures from the different automakers will seal their participation in the Green Racing News Summit, which in its first two editions has gathered more than 12,000 spectators.

Why is Simracing Vital for Sustainable Mobility?

Virtual motorsport, better known as simracing, functions as a test center for electric vehicles on the road.

Following the advances in electric vehicles, several video game developers have already incorporated this type of cars in their virtual races, enabling simracers and gamers alike to test the qualities of EVs in a space that does not generate emissions.

Seen on stage, those passionate about simracing will have the opportunity to hear the voices and see the faces behind the racing simulation games.

As happened at the inaugural Extreme E race in 2021, Rosberg Xtreme Racing (RXR), team founded by iconic driver Nico Rosberg, has scored an epic victory in the second season opener at the DesertXPrix, with Johan Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky.

Neom, Saudi Arabia, was the stage that saw debutant McLaren Racing, X44, Chip Ganassi Racing, RXR and ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team racing in the final.

The start had an interesting duel between Carlos Sainz and Sébastien Loeb, who finished the first lap in that order. Except for Tanner Foust’s rollover, which put an end to McLaren’s aspirations, everything was normal.

The third and fourth positions were for Mikaela and Sara Price, but the actions would give a radical change for the second part.

After the red flag due to Tanner’s accident, the race restarted with breaks when the teams reached the Change Zone.

Thus, everything was served for Kristoffersson to go for the comeback. The Swede went steadily to overtake Laia Sanz and Cristina Gutiérrez, with a considerable gap.

What was the DesertXPrix Semi-Final Series Like?

Semifinal 1 opened the second day of the duel in Neom. X44 and RXR would leave Xite Energy Racing, which had shown good signs during Saturday’s qualifying rounds, with no options.

On the other hand, Semifinal 2 was the final for Genesys Andretti United of Timmy Hansen and Catie Munnings. The duo, who took first place in round 2 of qualifying, could not keep pace against Chip Ganassi Racing and ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team, respectively.

McLaren would be the last team to qualify after winning the Crazy Race, where the rest of the teams participated.

Next Extreme E Race

It will be during May 7 and 8 when Extreme E returns on Odyssey 21 power to Sardinia, Italy, a place already known for the off-road electric SUV series that joined as an alternative to the suspended event in Brazil, scheduled for last year.

Thus, the ST. Helena, the vessel carrying all the logistics of the category, will arrive in the next few hours to European lands for what will be the IslandXPrix.

The throne dominance seems not to have changed much for the 2nd Season of Extreme E. The first racing day was led by the X44 of Sébastien Loeb and Cristina Gutiérrez, a team bordering on the title during the first season by tying on points with Rosberg Xtreme Racing, but the podiums difference did not allow them to be crowned.

But the start of “Season 2” in Neom, Saudi Arabia, has opened the doors for X44, at least on the first day of action. Second place in Qualifying 1 and first in Q2 Heat 1 (10pts), allowed them to be the top qualifier with 19 points.

Chip Ganassi Racing (8pts), ABT CUPRA XE (6pts), ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team (4pts) and Veloce Racing (2pts) completed the first of two races to define the semifinal starting order.

The Q2 Heat 2 of qualifying was led by Timmy Hansen and Catie Munnings’ Genesys Andretti United (10 pts), followed by Xite Energy Racing (8pts), JBXE (6pts), Rosberg Xtreme Racing (4pts) and McLaren Racing (2pts).

With these results, Semifinal 1, Semifinal 2 and Crazy Race, are defined for Sunday’s clashes.

Christine GZ is out for Veloce Racing

The team formed by Christine Giampaoli Zonca (GZ) and Lanza Woolridge, Veloce Racing, was unable to participate at the second qualifying round, after the Italian-Canarian driver overturned and although it did not happen, she suffered a fracture in her foot.

The reserve driver, Hedda Hosås, will take her place for tomorrow’s race on February 20.

McLaren Racing Debut

McLaren Racing’s debut in Extreme E has finally happened. The iconic Formula 1 team has carved out a niche for itself in the new off-road electric SUV competition with Tanner Foust and Emma Gilmour.

What were McLaren’s results in Extreme E? At the first instance, Qualifying 1, the Woking team achieved seventh place with 7 points.

Then, the Q2 Heat 2, was not the best scenario for the debutant squad, relegated to fifth place, getting only two units.

The #DesertXPrix will undoubtedly become the starting point for a team that, due to its history, promises to do great things in the “Electric Odyssey”.

From 2023, the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup will feature a new generation of motorcycles from the hand of Italian manufacturer Ducati, replacing Energica Motor Company, a firm that has accompanied the electric category since it was premiered back in 2019.

Energica Motor Company was in charge of creating the Energica Ego Corsa, official bike of the competition that, as originally planned, would run on the tracks for three years (until 2021), but the organization opted for one more year alongside the brand.

Now, MotoE™ has decided to give way to Ducati for the fifth season to be held in 2023, through a three-year contract, during which time it intends to exploit the full potential of the new vehicle that will star in the series.

The weight of the motorcycle is undoubtedly one of the main aspects to be improved. The Energica Ego Corsa weighed 225 kg, a factor t,hat prevented it from exceeding a speed of 260 km/h (160 mph). Therefore, during the official announcement of the new supplier, the CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, Claudio Domenicali, promised “an electric motorcycle with high performance and made to prove that it is light”.

“Weight is a fundamental element of sport bikes and where the biggest challenge will be. Lightness has always been in Ducati’s DNA and thanks to technology and battery chemistry, which are evolving rapidly, we are sure we can achieve excellent results,” Domenicali said of the new project.

Due to their hard work on reducing carbon footprint, the Formula E team ROKiT Venturi Racing has received the FIA 3-Star Environmental Accreditation, an award given to environmentally friendly organizations that meet a rigorous evaluation carried out by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile).

The news was released by the squad through its Twitter account (@VenturiFE), on a tweet where it made clear its commitment to create spaces promoting a carbon-free future.

“Today we celebrate our FIA 3-star Environmental Accreditation, while keeping an open mind and aware of the ever-evolving ways to reduce our carbon footprint,” said the team.

At the end of May, manufacturer Audi also earned the accreditation, which was also achieved by Formula 1 teams, Mercedes-AMG Petronas and Ferrari.

Besides the teams, the F1 and Formula E categories have also been awarded the prestigious distinction, created to achieve a carbon-neutral motor racing sector by 2050, among other reasons.

Venturi seals the commitment with the well known 100% electric single-seater series, where it has put all its efforts not only to reduce carbon emissions to really low numbers, but also to compensate them.

About Venturi

Founded back in 2013 and based in the Monaco Principality, ROKiT Venturi Racing was born to compete in Formula E. The main promoters have been the manufacturer Venturi and the prominent American actor, Leonardo DiCaprio.

It has been participating in the series since it was inaugurated in 2014, and since then, it has disputed 84 races, achieving 11 podiums and 3 victories.

Recently, the team was in the spotlight for hiring Brazilian driver Lucas di Grassi, who will be paired with veteran Edoardo Mortara.

After securing seventh place on the Formula E World Teams’ Championship in ” season seven “, Venturi has taken over services of one of the biggest references in the competition: Lucas di Grassi. With this addition, the team will be looking to win both titles next season.

The team from Principality of Monaco did a good job with Edoardo Mortara in 2021, who arrived at the final race in Berlin with great possibilities of winning the title. But an unexpected accident at the start of the race left him with no chance. Even with no points, he finished runner-up (92 points), seven points behind the champion, Nyck de Vries.

But it was Norman Nato who did not have the best of times. The Frenchman was only able to collect 54 points, 25 of which he obtained by winning the last and eventful race of the season.

So, for Season Eight, ROKiT Venturi Racing has formed a duo that will seek scoring points not achieved in 2021, with di Grassi and Mortara.

Lucas was left with no team after Audi ABT’s departure, an event that has been taken advantage of by Venturi to practically “ensure” a good amount of points with the Brazilian veteran, who was alive at the last E-Prix and knows what it’s like to win a title (2016/2017).

Venturi for Glory

With the new acquisition, Venturi will seek to position itself as one of the strongest teams in single-seater electric racing. After the departure of BMW and Audi ABT, the team will undoubtedly have a unique opportunity to make history.

The Formula E World Championship will return to tracks on January 28 and 29 in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, which will be the last season in the series with the second generation of vehicles (Gen2), opening the doors to a new lineup of electric vehicles with considerable improvements.

Future. One of the most used concepts and applied by electric vehicle manufacturers joining the sustainable era, but none of them has it on its name.

Except for Faraday Future. This California-based company with Chinese roots combines intelligent mobility, electric vehicles and elegance to create the FF 91, their flagship model.

Three electric motors and the capability to reach 60 km/h in just 2.39 seconds, are the keynote of FF 91’s power, an excellent match for the futuristic design, which certainly distinguishes it from almost any vehicle on the road.

“Our Li-ion battery cells achieve the highest energy density in the world, almost twice as high as a production car battery,” Faraday Future points out through its web portal, through which it refers to the nearly 500 kilometers of autonomy of the electric vehicle.

Comfort and User Experience

Starting with the rear seats, we can highlight the fact that they use what is known as Neutral Body Posture, a concept defined by scientists at the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which allows the ideal distribution of body weight, a sign that it is designed for long and familiar journeys.

Digitalization will play a key role inside the car. A 27-inch screen accessible to the driver and co-driver will allow artificial voice activation of various functions, such as lowering the roof or moving the rear-view mirrors.

Faraday Future is currently expanding the team to successfully mass-produce this model, intended to break new ground on the luxury electric vehicle market.

For the moment, it is only possible to reserve through the following link.

About Faraday Future and Formula E

Established in 2014 and with more than 1,400 workers, this Chinese investor company is located in Gardens -California, USA.

Since 2017, they have put all their efforts into developing improvements and updates to the FF 91. Last year, the manufacturer had sealed participation into Formula E with the Dragon Racing team as main sponsor and technical advisor. However, limited funding caused them to abandon the electric single-seater competition for the following season.

  • The company is developing a hydrogen fuel cell-powered marine launch.
  • QEV Technologies is currently working on public tenders with Germany, Greece and Portugal.
  • Javier Navarro, COO QEV Tech Bus & Truck: “For a fossil fuel vehicle to be electrified, it must not have a 5-year longevity”.
  • From five different hydrogen projects including a minibus, to the addition of small delivery vans to its growing fleets, are among the main novelties that the Spanish-born company, QEV Technologies, has unveiled through an exclusive interview with Latam Mobility and Green Racing News team, through COO of its Bus & Truck division, Javier Navarro.

The executive, who has more than 20 years of experience in the electromobility sector, focusing on fleet services and large scale fleets for deliveries, municipalities and service companies, used the opportunity to explain the features that a combustion vehicle must have in order to be electrified.

Does QEV consider or already have progress in any project involving hydrogen as a fuel?

Yes. From the QEV Tech Bus & Truck division, we are developing up to five different projects: a 6-8m long minibus with hydrogen fuel cell; a high-floor intercity bus, also with hydrogen fuel cell and with a Catalan manufacturer; a cement delivery truck with hopper, also with hydrogen fuel cell; also a tractor unit and a 12m long bus, both with hydrogen fuel cell; and finally, a 13m long marine boat with a hydrogen fuel cell that has a range of ~100 km (~63 miles).

Besides Peru and Mexico, which other Latin American countries have the potential/projection to receive QEV Tech Bus solutions and why?

Actually all countries, not just in Latin America, but all over the world, are susceptible to electrification. It all depends on the longevity of the fleet, the financial capacity of the operator, the country’s own legislation, as well as the orientation of the project: whether it is private or linked to a specific public-private tender, with its own characteristics and objectives to be met.

QEV Tech Bus & Truck is technically developing solutions for different countries, such as Colombia, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica and Peru, and also in Europe, we are developing our activity in Spain, and taking steps with public bids in Portugal, Greece and Germany. Our competitive advantage allows us to efficiently and optimally perform, satisfying both client and end user.

    eUrban Test Circuit Catalunya-Montmeló

Explain to us the experience in developing the E-Titan propulsion system, the first 100% electric bus in Peru. What are the results obtained after its launching, and are there any plans for its large-scale massification?

The first E-Titan electric bus manufactured in Peru was acquired by the electric company ENGIE. The second unit belongs to our partner MODASA, a leading Peruvian bus manufacturer. This unit is currently being tested with different operators: either in Arequipa or in Lima, and in other possible cities we are still evaluating. For QEV Technologies, the purpose of these tests is to determine the characteristics of each operation, and the energy required for the public/private transport service.

Tell us about QEV Tech Bus’ news and goals for the coming months and years.

QEV Tech Bus & Truck division is going to incorporate into its fleet small vehicles and vans from different types and sizes: from a car-sharing vehicle to vans for last mile delivery, goods and people transportation. We are currently in the homologation process, taking as a reference the European legislation, whose evolution and updating is generally a reference and is applicable to other countries. We expect to present the complete lineup by the end of 2021.

COO J.Navarro + CTO Ismael Fernández validating a new project

What specifications must a vehicle have in order to be eligible for conversion to electric vehicles? Which ones do not apply?

Fundamentally, the vehicle must not have a lifespan of more than 5 years, as it makes no sense to electrify a vehicle susceptible to maintenance or with conditions affecting, such as corrosion in some parts or the need to replace an important component, which, together with the passage of time, have an impact on its condition.

Second, the vehicle configuration and length must allow the battery required for the operation. For example, if a bus is running 200km daily, the bus electrification must match or exceed the daily distance range, with no need to stop for recharging while on route. This vehicle will be recharged during off-peak hours, when it is not performing any service.

On the other hand, we also study and simulate routes exposing the necessary energy to be shipped and how the operation should be carried out with opportunity recharges, as well as the necessary power and charging times: the EV is not only refueled during off-peak hours, when tariffs are cheaper; we also look for time fractions during the day when the vehicle can make a stop.

Basically, each vehicle susceptible to be converted to electric requires a detailed study, because all the characteristics are considered: configurations, axle weight distribution, chassis, bodywork… And this is the main competitive advantage of QEV Tech Bus&Truck: in contrast to other companies whose solutions are “standard” and canned, QEV Technologies performs a comprehensive and detailed study for each vehicle and project, adjusted to its characteristics and objectives.

Therefore, QEV Technologies proves that it is dedicating efforts and resources to industrialize itself, increasing company’s capacity, independence and autonomy in production.

“A joint venture with BtechC and Ronn Motor Group has been introduced for the big D-Hub project: a Decarbonization Hub located in Catalonia, Spain, which would allow us industrialization, as well as emancipation regarding suppliers and stakeholders,” Navarro said.

Integrated energy company, Chevron USA Inc., in alliance with global construction and mining equipment manufacturer, Caterpillar, announced a collaboration agreement to develop hydrogen projects to impact the transportation and stationary power sectors.

A demonstration of a prototype hydrogen locomotive is among the major plans that the two companies involved will carry out to prove that hydrogen fuel is a viable alternative to fossil fuel options, and a commercial product capable of positively impacting present and future sustainable mobility.

While details of the projects have not been published yet, Chevron informed through a press release that the railway demonstration project will begin “immediately” at several locations in the United States.

Likewise, Joe Creed, president of Energy and Transportation for the Caterpillar Group, emphasized that the announced project was born with the purpose of offering customers all possible options to use the most desired type of fuel for their operations, thus broadening a landscape that increasingly includes sustainability at its roots.

“This agreement supports our commitment to invest in new products, technologies and services to help our customers achieve their climate-related goals while building a better, more sustainable world,” Creed said.

Caterpillar recently announced on their website that they will begin offering 100% hydrogen-capable generator sets, including renewable green hydrogen, which will be made to order later this year.
