Formula 1 and Banco Santander announced the Santander X Global Challenge | Countdown to Zero award winners, a project that seeks to highlight sustainable initiatives, as part of the agreement between the world’s top motor racing category and the bank

.In the project, F1 was part of the jury that evaluated the projects of 600 entrepreneurs from 11 countries, including proposals from Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, USA, Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Poland, United Kingdom and Uruguay. In this way, Santander and Formula 1 fulfilled part of their three-year strategic partnership.

Santander X is helping thousands of entrepreneurs to take their ideas further and faster,” said Juan Manuel Cendoya, Communications, Corporate Marketing and Research Director of the Santander Group, when the initiative was announced. “This agreement takes that support to a new level, creating opportunities for companies to join forces with one of the world’s most innovative sports and support the transition to a low-carbon economy,” the executive said.

Despite being different competitions, the world of motorsport has sought to compare Formula E with F1. For the masterminds of the electric series, such as Alejandro Agag and Alberto Longo, both categories will eventually merge, while others, more pessimistic, see no future for the zero emissions championship.

The director of the Red Bull team in the top category, Christian Horner, declared that Formula E “does not work because it has almost no people, there is no noise, no passion. There is also no atmosphere and the manufacturers are withdrawing from the championship again”.

The ex-driver alluded to Mercedes, Audi and BMW’s departures, but did not refer to McLaren’s intentions to join, or the inclusion of Maserati for Season 9.

The truth is that the pronouncement has not gone down well in the electric single-seater series. Specifically, Porsche driver André Lotterer came out and responded to Horner. “Both series have the best talent, but on average there is more in Formula E because everyone is a professional and no one brings money with them. They have all earned their place through talent. Some drivers wouldn’t have a place in Formula 1 without their sponsor.”

He noted that the two tournaments are two different worlds that cannot be compared. “The championship has a future and there are not many alternatives for manufacturers to introduce electric mobility. If it didn’t work, Formula E wouldn’t be here,” the German added.

FIA Endorsement

Despite the criticism, Formula E is heading into its first decade and with intentions to keep moving forward. Since season 7, the tournament has become a World Championship of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which clearly shows that Alejandro Agag’s idea has gone from being, for some, madness to a palpable reality.

Furthermore, a few years ago, the former President of the FIA, Jean Todt, approved a series of regulations at all levels so that the different competitions affiliated to the governing body of world motorsport would adopt sustainable practices, with the aim of reducing their emissions.

Formula E is not only a sporting tournament, but also leaves an important legacy in the destinations it visits, with the goal of promoting electromobility.

With many motorsports tipping the scales towards sustainability, Formula 1 (F1) could not be left out of this equation. The Grand Circus plans to introduce a new range of 100% environmentally friendly fuels, and even the current decade has been placed as the estimated launch date.

In 2022, the Maximum Category of World Motorsport will enter a new phase, where technical and economic regulations will change in order to make the action on the track more attractive. However, the fuel to be used will be ‘E1’, a blend of 90% fossil and 10% ethanol, so the need to be sustainable will be present.

To this end, F1 will work closely with one of the main sponsors, Aramco, with whom they have agreed to make the transition to green energies by 2024 or 2025, two years after the regulation change introduced on 2022. Pat Symonds, Technical Director of the category, is convinced it can be achieved.

“What sets the targets is simply finding enough of the products we need. There’s a lot of ethanol around, it’s easy to incorporate it. But when you start getting into these more complex molecules, there’s not a lot and that’s why the time to launch (mid-decade) is realistic,” he told Formula 1 Press.

What will the Formula 1 transition to sustainability look like?

As explained by the Grand Circus, the fuel will have a component in its formula from a carbon capture scheme of municipal waste or non-food ‘biomass’ intended to be made on small scales initially at a pilot plant, then decipher the pathway and proceed to manufacture it in large quantities.

“It’s very ambitious, in the scale of what we’re trying to do, to make a very high-performance sustainable fuel.”

Pat Symonds

In this way, significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions would be removed from the environment over fossil-based gasoline. On the other hand, when talking about ‘biomass’, F1 points to algae, agricultural waste and cultivated non-food crops that do not meet the requirements to be produced.

“Carbon capture is a method we are very interested in because it removes carbon directly from the air. It’s in its infancy, but there are plants doing it; there are some in Canada, there’s one in Switzerland that’s quite large, also in South America. So it’s feasible, and I think within 20 years, there will actually be quite a bit out there. But it’s very, very experimental,” Symonds said.

Formula 1 is one of the best categories of motorsports (for many, the best). Therefore, what it does in terms of sustainability will always be an example for the rest of the divisions. An indication of this is the French Grand Prix, which was recognized with the FIA 3 Star Environmental Certification.

This distinction awarded by the highest governing body of motor racing is the most prestigious in terms of planet-friendly performance, and the French Grand Prix is the first race organizer to receive it. All this has been possible thanks to the work and efforts to reduce polluting raw materials and leaning towards the use of clean energies or biofuels.

In addition, the Grand Circus event has also implemented an innovative plan that significantly reduces the carbon footprint emitted during the transportation of fans to the Paul Ricard circuit, demonstrating an exemplary commitment to social responsibility and care for the planet.

“The FIA Environmental Certification Framework is an important standard by which sustainability is measured in motorsport and its stakeholders. I am pleased to see that the strong commitments and actions taken by the French Grand Prix have brought it to the Three Star level. Pioneering innovations have always been part of motorsport,” said Jean Todt, President of the FIA.

For his part, GP President, Christian Estrosi, showed his joy after receiving the distinction and shared it with the entire team behind the organization of the event, recognizing the commitment of those involved, who seek to build a sustainable future in motorsports that is as attractive as it is environmentally friendly.

Having teams in Formula E and Formula 1, and mastering both categories, is no coincidence. Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes, can presume that not only has he dominated the Grand Circus of motorsport, but he also knows how to win at innovative events, such as the electric single-seater series.

His work has reached unimaginable levels, and like Alejandro Agag, Formula E’s founder, he envisions combining the two tournaments on the same stage.

Beyond merging the competitions as suggested by some, the Mercedes boss considers that it would be more viable to alternate the same stage in the future. “I’m not sure about merging, there are legal contracts. But I think Formula E looks spectacular on street circuits and I can really imagine these cars racing with Formula 1 in Monaco, in Singapore, on some of the street circuits,” he commented.

Innovative Impact

The Austrian has also highlighted on several occasions the contribution that both Formula 1 and Formula E have to the automotive industry. “There is a technology transfer from both. In Formula 1, it’s about hybrid technology, sustainable fuels. And here, it’s electric vehicles, and we put a lot of effort into doing a good job, and there are interesting parts for the road cars as well,” he explained.

Mercedes arrived at Formula E with a team of their own last season, and recently won the Drivers’ Championship with Nick De Vries, as well as the Constructors’ Championship.

Always linked to Motorsport

Wolff began his motorsport career as a driver back in 1992, at the Austrian Formula Ford Championship. He also competed in the German Formula Ford Championship in 1993 and 1994, and won the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in the latter year.

As a leader, on November 20, 2009, it was confirmed that he acquired 16% of Williams F1 Team and he joined as a director. In July 2012, he was named CEO of the British team.

In 2013, he became the new CEO and Mercedes shareholder, so he had to step down from his Williams responsibilities. Initially he remained a shareholder, although he later confirmed his intention to sell his share.

Under his leadership, the Mercedes team has been Master and Commander of Formula 1, winning uninterruptedly the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships from 2014 to 2020.

Automakers are fundamentally rethinking motorsports for the electric age. Even the Mercedes team, which dominates the highest category of world motorsport, is looking for new horizons.

Mercedes-Benz has won the last seven Formula 1 (F1) championships, but its parent company, Daimler, is reducing its participation in the team. While F1 remains valuable from an image perspective, Daimler can now get more out of its marketing investment, while the racing unit also pushes to increase its own revenue outside of international tracks.

Sales boost

The team plans to sell more engineering services to external clients. By leveraging its expertise in optimizing aerodynamics and engine efficiency, as well as processing complex data, the Brackley, England-based company aims to triple revenue in its applied science unit to 100 million pounds sterling (135 million dollars) by 2025.

The entire organization is boosting its profitability in two years, CEO Toto Wolff said in a report by the Bloomberg news agency.

“In Formula One it’s all about speed of delivery, and our speed of delivery of technical solutions that are both competitive as well as safe is something that can be applied across a wide range of areas,” Wolff said in an interview.

Mercedes is one of the most successful racing organizations in the world. Its star driver, Lewis Hamilton, has won six F1 championships since 2014. The domain faces a new test when cost caps go into effect to revive competition and make the grand prix more sustainable.

Honda Motor Co. said in October that they will leave F1 at the end of the 2021 season, while Volkswagen AG’s BMW AG and Volkswagen AG’s Audi have announced that they will be leaving Formula E electric motor racing. The VW brand is ending all sports activities and reassigning employees to work on building the largest battery-powered fleet in the industry.

Powerful supercar

In addition to outside sales efforts, the Mercedes F1 team has deepened collaboration with the performance car division to reinforce fully or partially electric sports car offerings.

The three years that have passed since Mercedes showed off the last car, a two-seater that boasts more than 1,000 horsepower, suggests that there are reasons no other automaker has tried to plug an F1 powertrain into a vehicle for public streets.

Porsche AG and Toyota Motor Corp. have used racing to test technology for road vehicles, but the transfer of knowledge was mainly focused on areas such as turbocharged engines or electric power recovery in hybrid systems.

Adapting sophisticated F1 components like the exhaust gas turbocharger and adjusting the noise vibration to levels that don’t pierce the eardrums is costly. Still, it’s worth the effort, said Jochen Hermann, AMG’s chief technology officer.

In the electric vehicle sector, traditional manufacturers have taken it easier than startups like Tesla. There are undoubtedly interesting bets and proof of this is Volkswagen with its ID.3 and ID.4 for example. However, other classics such as Mercedes-Benz have been a bit behind. They plan to fix that by launching a total of six new electric cars in the short term.

Daimler, the parent company behind Mercedes-Benz, has announced what the roadmap is for the brand’s electric vehicles. To date we have seen more concepts (spectacular, it must be said) than final and mass-manufactured products. But this looks set to change. Thanks to a new scalable architecture, the manufacturer hopes to be able to adapt production to the needs of each moment.
