Extreme E kicked off a new season of competition, specifically the third, in NEOM, Saudi Arabia, as part of a campaign that will mark history in the series after extending the number of races (from five to ten), starting with a double date in Saudi territory that left two new winners.

Veloce Racing and ACCIONA / Sainz XE Team shone during their performances at the Desert X Prix, delighting fans of the 100% electric off-road category. However, before all this happened they were part of the first Legacy Programme of the season.

Recall that the main purpose of the series is to promote sustainability and good environmental practices in all senses, i.e. at the level of soil, air, water, flora and fauna. In this way, Extreme E revealed details about the program that takes place in NEOM.

The Extreme E Footprint

Back at NEOM, Extreme E supported reconstruction and greening efforts in the developing region located in northwestern Saudi Arabia, following up on the category’s efforts last year.

Last season, the 100% electric off-road category released lizards into the region’s landscape. Now, drivers and series staff went to the NEOM Nature Reserve to contribute to the release of Arabian oryx, red-necked ostriches and Arabian gazelles.

These species have not been able to roam freely in the area for more than a century, according to Extreme E. Therefore, the contribution of the category represents a significant step forward in the restoration of NEOM’s nature initiated in 2022 with the aim of protecting, enhancing biodiversity, rejuvenating natural habitats, reintroducing native species and greening the environment.

Thus, 95 % of NEOM’s land will be set aside for nature conservation, making it one of the largest regreening programs in the world at 25,000 square kilometers.

“Through a combination of active and passive greening, we will add 100 million native trees, shrubs and grasses to NEOM by 2030 as part of the overall Saudi Greening Initiative (SGI),” said Paul Marshall, director of the NEOM Nature Reserve.

Pascal Wehrlein arrived in Cape Town with a spectacular start to the season and eager to cement his lead in the debut of the Gen3 era of Formula E. However, things didn’t go as planned and he had a bumpy ride on South African soil.

The German had been in the top 10 all weekend and headed into the duels in qualifying, losing out to Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy, but still secured sixth place on the grid.

The Porsche car has been a powerhouse in fuel efficiency so far this season, and appeared to be on track for another win with a conservative strategy, giving up a place to Sebastien Buemi (Envision Racing) from the line.

However, only halfway through the first lap, Wehrlein made a mistake at Turn 9 and misjudged his braking point, sliding straight into Buemi’s car and taking them both out of the race; Wehrlein ended up with a broken suspension, while the Swiss recovered impressively to fifth place at the checkered flag.

Mea Culpa

“It was a painful day because anything was possible,” said the Porsche flag-bearer. “It was my fault and a clear mistake on my part. I braked too late and too hard, I locked the wheels, I just couldn’t avoid the collision.”

“I apologize and I’m sorry for the team and my crew. We win together and lose together and in Sao Paulo we will attack again.”

Wehrlein had finished in the top four during the previous races, which leaves him a good stretch in first place despite not scoring in Cape Town.

With Jake Dennis in 13th place in the race, the German accumulates an 18-point lead with the Brazilian E-Prix coming up on March 25 in the city of Sao Paulo.

Penalty and Future Focus

It should be noted that, in addition to not scoring points in South Africa, Wehrlein will start three places behind and with a two-point penalty. “I still don’t have my eyes on the title,” says the Porsche driver. “It’s very early in the season and it’s the individual results and the races that count for me at the moment.

He assured that Cape Town did not represent a considerable defeat due to the fact that his nearest rival failed to achieve a significant place in the final table.

Formula E is not only a space that once again brings together the world’s motorsport brands in another ordinary tournament in the exciting world of motorsport, but also represents a key space for testing and developing technology for electric vehicles.

The company is described as an impressive laboratory in which manufacturers conduct tests with the aim of accelerating their electrification processes also in the field of their urban models outside the sporting competition.

DS, one of the pioneering teams, describes Formula E as a “true open-air laboratory“, helping to accelerate innovation in terms of both hardware and software in the electric vehicles it sells to the public.

High Innovation

The technology applied in Formula E carries over and powers the ultra-high-performance powertrains, which operate at an efficiency of more than 97%, as well as the cutting-edge software that provides the “brains” for its Gen3 car: the DS E-TENSE FE23.

The company points out that this constitutes a major source of technology transfer that can be achieved at relatively manageable costs compared to the production of physical parts.

This is particularly the case with what can be learned during a season and beyond when it comes to optimizing regenerative braking.

It is important to be fast to win in Formula E, but also to recover energy when braking as efficiently as possible. To achieve this, the engineers at DS Automobiles‘ competition arm design algorithms that optimize this important element of competition.

In that sense, everything DS Performance learns about software through its Formula E campaign is useful knowledge for the development teams working on DS Automobiles’ on-road E-TENSE models.

Technological Reference

The DS 7 E-TENSE 4×4 360 uses energy recovery software that comes directly from Formula E. This is even more efficient than the system used on previous models and optimizes management by analyzing the pressure exerted on the brake pedal to offer unprecedented braking characteristics.

“Motorsport is a vital research and development tool,” says Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance Director. “That’s why DS Automobiles chose the ABB FIA Formula E FIA World Championship to electrify its range.”

“The experience accumulated over many seasons was and continues to be very useful for the development of today’s and tomorrow’s road cars. A clear example of this is energy recovery under braking, which is studied and pushed to the limit in Formula E, then transferred to all our electric road car models,” he added.

DS is one of the most decorated outfits in the history of Formula E. Two double titles, a points record and 16 victories, most recently at the hands of Jean-Eric Vergne in Hyderabad, place it among the series’ benchmarks.

The ERA Championship Series Europe 2023 grid is starting to take an interesting shape for the second season of the category, which seeks to promote the development of young talent aboard electric single-seaters, rescuing principles of sustainability, inclusion, gender equality and sportsmanship.

In this sense, a new driver has been confirmed as part of the upcoming campaign: 18-year-old Canadian/Polish Victor Smialek, who is fully ready to take on the challenge in his young and promising career in the 100% electric single-seater category.

This driver started his path within motorsport racing in manual karts, where he has raced there since 2019, training and making his way towards 2021, as there, he won the Canadian Open in Open Shifter.

He then made the jump to cars in 2022, gaining recognition in Lucky Dog Racing and winning the GT2 and F1600 championship, where he placed second and third in GPF1 in Pro-Am in Montreal.

In addition to that, Smialek was part of the Next Gen Racer 2022 organized by ERA Championship, generating interesting sensations during the competition to come to the conclusion of wanting to participate in the championship as a starting driver.

With much of the calendar played in season 9 of Formula E, things are not going well at Jaguar Racing, which expected to be positioned in a better place at this early stage. The team is in sixth place, not insignificant when there is still a lot of work to be done, but this does not please the members of the team.

Nick Cassidy and Sebastien Buemi (Envision Racing) are showing what the Jaguar propulsion system can do, as their team is in second place in the team standings, but Jaguar itself, with Sam Bird and Mitch Evans at the wheel, have not lived up to expectations.

When it looked all set for a win in Hyderabad, India, with Evans starting fourth in the standings, Bird crashed heavily in one of the fastest parts of the track: he hit the Maserati MSG Racing machine of Edoardo Mortara. It was such a heavy impact that his team was unable to repair it in time for the race leaving another race weekend without points.

Unmotivated

On the current state of the team, Bird stated that “the guys are really down and I’m down. I just want a good result again, I feel I deserve it, but it’s been a long time coming. I’m doing well, but I don’t have much to show for it.”

“The team worked very hard. We were well prepared and invested a lot and we are always fast. We’re in the top three or four every time we go out on the track. When they take that away from us, it’s really complicated,” he added.

In addition to not being able to take to the track in India, Bird faces a penalty for the Sao Paulo E-Prix, in which he will suffer a five-place drop on the starting grid.

Not Throwing the Towel in

“It was a disappointing setback for my championship aspirations,” Evans said. “We know we have an incredibly fast car, but I couldn’t get the points I think the team deserved. We’ll try again in Sao Paulo.”

For his part, James Barclay, Jaguar‘s director, also regretted the performance in Hyderabad, but assures that they will get out of the current slump. “As a team, we have already shown that we can prepare the cars for the race even in difficult conditions. But with all that damage, that was simply impossible.”

“We proved that the car is great, it’s fast. Luck will be on our side again, we just have to keep it up,” he assured.

If you ask the Formula 1 community (including the drivers) which circuit is their favorite, the Japanese Grand Prix will undoubtedly feature alongside the Belgian Grand Prix.

Both steal the hearts of the motorsport environment, but although Belgium is a slight favorite, the Suzuka circuit has managed to provide a great spectacle season after season as soon as the lights go out and the green flag is waved.

Great Formula 1 events have been decided at Suzuka, and it has even been the main witness of not so pleasant events. The layout of the track is spectacular with its unmistakable number eight (8) shape, and is the only circuit to run in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions.

It can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, despite having 18 corners that complete a length of 5.8 kilometers. Suzuka demands a moderately high aerodynamic configuration, as well as being a fundamental factor in the wear of the braking units and tires.

Pure History

The Suzuka circuit has witnessed events that will remain forever in the memory of fans of the world’s top motor racing category. In 1976, the drivers’ championship was dramatically decided between James Hunt and Niki Lauda after the Austrian retired due to bad weather conditions and the Briton crossed the finish line to secure the title.

In the 1989 season, McLaren fans’ hearts were stopped when Alain Prost intentionally crashed his car into teammate Ayrton Senna. The Frenchman abandoned the race while the Brazilian was able to continue racing to win the race, but moments later the race director decided to disqualify Senna for “jumping a corner”, causing Prost to win that year’s title.

Finally, statistically speaking, Michael Schumacher is the one who has won the most times at Suzuka circuit (6), while McLaren and Ferrari are the teams that have won the most times (9), while one of the greatest, Ayrton Senna, won his three championships at that circuit (1988, 1990 and 1991).

Extreme E 2023 kicked off this weekend in Neom, Saudi Arabia, with the Desert X Prix, officially inaugurating a new season full of novelties. The first race held on Saturday was in the hands of Kevin Hansen and Molly Taylor (Veloce), who took the win after crossing the finish line in second position combined with the fact of a penalty imposed on the first, Rosberg X Racing (speeding under yellow flag).

Veloce was closely followed by ACCIONA | Saiz XE Team, who finished second. “It feels great. To come back to Saudi Arabia and get my first win in Extreme E with this new team, with Molly, and in the country where I had an accident that changed my career, it’s a highlight,” Hanse said.

On the other hand, Taylor was happy for the great start along with her return to Extreme E. “I think everyone on the team clicked from the beginning, we developed and improved. We were able to start at a very good level in Uruguay (2022),” he said.

Victory for ACCIONA – Sainz XE Team

The second day of action at NEOM was as good as could have been expected. Without Carlos Sainz as the starter, ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team achieved its first victory in the 100% electric off-road category after a brilliant drive by Laia Sanz and Mattias Ekström.

The team achieved a comfortable lead during the course to claim the long-awaited first victory in Extreme E, something that had been very close to happening in previous editions. Now, they finally managed to prevail on the NEOM desert sand with a comfortable lead over their pursuers, Veloce Racing and RXR.

“I’m very happy, both for me and for the team, we got our first victory in Extreme E! I want to thank Mattias for giving me the car with such a good car. I had a good stint and was able to keep the gap, so I’m more than satisfied,” said Laia Sanz.

On the other hand, Ekström highlighted that the previous planning was key to the result obtained in the Desert X Prix. “We had designed a strategy for the Grand Final and I executed it to the best of my ability. I am very happy that it turned out to be fruitful. Laia drove very well and managed the gap perfectly. It’s a good win for the team,” he said.

Finally, Carlos Sainz also expressed his opinion on the win despite not having been behind the wheel, as he is out of the season while recovering from an injury suffered in the Dakar Rally 2023.

“I am very happy that the first victory for ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team is finally here, because we have worked a long time to get it. Laia and Mattias were spectacular and have already shown that they are one of the strongest pairs of riders in the Championship,” he said.

Perhaps, among the debates where there are few doubts regarding great Formula 1 drivers, Ayrton Senna is included, who is considered by many as the best of all times, or one of the greatest in history, since his passion took him to the pinnacle of motorsport with a great track record behind him.

He made his debut in 1984. His Latin American boldness arrived at the tracks of the highest category of world motorsport to make its presence felt, a remarkable presence that was even more evident the following season when he won his first victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1985.

Then came the most beautiful stage of his career, defining an unforgettable era in the Grand Circus. We are talking about the late 80s and early 90s, when the Brazilian’s rivalry crossed paths with Alain Prost to generate an incredible battle for the world titles.

Ayrton Senna’s Mark

He was champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991. He was a true master in the rain, his talent excelled aboard single-seaters with manual gear changes, and even so, he was able to push the car to the limits, considering the wet track conditions, where only he was able to do it that way.

An example of this was the first lap in the 1993 European Grand Prix at Donington Park. There, much of Ayrton Senna’s magic was seen on a rain-covered circuit, where some struggled not to lose control, while he battled to get to the front.

Ayrton Senna

The Brazilian’s quality was undeniable every time he put on his helmet, although many would have wished he had not put his helmet on that May 1, 1994 at the Imola circuit. The Tamburello corner abruptly and suddenly snatched from the hands of one of the greatest of all time.

That event shocked the world motorsport community, not to mention the fact that the day before his teammate Roland Ratzenberger had died at the same circuit. The signs of destiny were clear, Senna did not want to get into the car after seeing how he lost his teammate.

It is as if his sixth sense warned him, but unfortunately Formula 1 decided to continue, and Senna, as the great professional he was, climbed into his single-seater where he tragically ended his career, leaving the fans of the Grand Circus traumatized and elevating his legacy prematurely and permanently.
