  • Motorsport has an enormous power to bring about epoch-making changes
  • Alejandro Agag’s name is widely known throughout the sustainable sports world. A Spaniard, visionary and strong advocate of sustainable practices, he dedicates his wit to completely transforming people’s perspective on climate change using one powerful tool: sport.

Part of his ingenuity has come together with Rodi Basso to take the next step and electrify the seas with the E1 Series, the 100% electric powerboat racing division. Faced with this new challenge that was announced months ago, Agag shared his perspective on what’s to come.

“What started as just an idea and a concept shared with Rodi Basso and Sophie Horne quickly became a tangible reality. But this is just the beginning. The program for the future is tight,” Agag told Top – Yachtdesign when the category was being born.

The dream ended up materializing in work, and will soon become a full reality. E1 Series already has the prototype of the RaceBird 100% manufactured, and has even successfully passed the tests carried out on the waters so far. Faced with a new way of racing on the water, Agag firmly believes in the role of the sustainable sports division.

“Technology has made significant advances and will also help in this transition process for the marine industry. I am convinced that the E1 Series will be an extraordinary accelerator,” he said of the role of this new sport.

    Alejandro Agag’s Footprint

Agag is behind Formula E, a pioneering category of electric single-seaters that is preparing with great expectations for the leap to the new generation of vehicles, Gen3, which will come into force next season, as the most efficient, fast and powerful car the series has ever seen.

He also has an important footprint in Extreme E, the 100% electric off-road category that is only in its second season, but has grown enormously since then, with great television coverage and social media coverage worldwide.

Drones are part of the technological development in recent years. They are used for police work, military and domestic level to deliver and receive packages. However, the Drone Racing League is also part of the 100% sustainable motor sport with exciting races that have stolen the hearts of many.

The competition consists of bringing together the best pilots to operate drones remotely, but with virtual reality glasses that immerse them deeply into the flight experience, by simulating being inside the eVTOL, and aiming to complete a challenging race as fast as possible.

The division has managed to reach several parts of the world, and when not, it stands out through the DRL Sim, a competition simulator providing realistic sensations to the league’s pilots. The drones are capable of reaching up to 90 miles per hour, requiring great driving skills to avoid crashing them on demanding circuits.

DRL has managed to reach into the homes of many people thanks to broadcast via NBC, NBCSN, Twitter, Fox Sports, Sky Sports, ProSieben and Weibo. No doubt, the fusion between technology, speed and sport has made a great impact on motorsports society, and even more so with an electrified and sustainable division.

Active since 2016, DRL hands out more up to $1 million in prizes. During the 2020 season, it had 12 pilots competing across 16 different races, with one more complicated than the other, segmented by levels, and managing to reach platforms such as Xbox and Steam.

The competition is on a level playing field for all participants, meaning everyone will have identical hardware (240 Hz monitor, custom controller and headset, desktop computer, laptop).

    Drone Racing League: Rules

All pilots initially undergo a qualifying round one day before the official race, which is streamed live. Each pilot will have 30 minutes to learn, practice and record their drone’s course, as well as compete to execute an optimal time that places them among the top three for direct advancement to The Finals.

The remaining seven pilots will have to fight in the semifinals. This instance will be divided into two groups. Group 1 will be made up of the drivers who finished from sixth to tenth position and will compete over three regular rounds and one Sudden Death. The top three will advance to Group 2 where they will face those who placed fourth and fifth during the qualifying round.

    (Photo: DRL)

Now, Group 2 has five more pilots, of which three will access the Finals under the same format as Group 1 (three regular rounds and one Sudden Death). At the Finals, the six drivers who qualified will battle through five regular rounds, leaving a ticket to the Golden Heat for the winners of each series (a single driver can win more than one round, reducing the number of participants at the Golden Heat).

The Golden Heat is the final round, so whoever wins here will be the champion of the race.

Arriving to Greenland to compete among an incredible environment and unique landscapes was not the only goal of Extreme E after competing at the Artic X Prix, as the message of awareness about climate change served as the main factor to distribute to fans of the category, both children and adults.

Greenland is a key place for life stability on Earth, as the presence of numerous polar ice caps in serious danger of melting threatens to have irreversible consequences; therefore, the 100% electrified rally category worked to impart a message that really impacts on society.

Bringing an international motorsports event to this island for the first time was just the beginning. Extreme E organized a set of talks called The Tipping Point by a number of climate change advocates, including members of the competition. “The reason we raced in Greenland was much more important than putting on a fantastic show,” said Alejandro Agag.

The runaway melting of Arctic ice is a serious problem. Every time a fraction melts, it contributes to sea level rise, a factor that can trigger natural phenomena such as floods, disappearance of coastal territories and, in most extreme cases, tsunamis that wipe out everything on their path.

The consequences do not end there, since the cold in places like this has frozen ancient viruses and diseases that affected the population at the time. In fact, there are probably also pathologies never before discovered that could threaten people’s lives just by the “simple melting of the ice”.

“We hope that the Extreme E global legacy workshops will now bring a wave of change to realize our collective ability to deliver climate and, more broadly, sustainability solutions. We need everyone involved in the category ecosystem to achieve this positive tipping point,” said Professor Carlos Duarte, one of the five world-renowned researchers on the Scientific Committee of the electrified off-road series.

On a sporting level, the race was a success where Andretti United cut, with Catie Munnings and Timmy Hansen, two consecutive victories recorded so far by Rosberg X Racing with the imposing duo of Molly Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson, who following a great season of hard battle against X44 became Extreme E champions.

However, the best part of bringing ODYSSEY 21 to Greenland was raising awareness about the plight of the Arctic and how to take action to slow down the unchecked melting of the ice.

McLaren will become the first Formula 1 team to extend the passion for motorsport to the sustainable side of Extreme E, as weeks ago confirmed their official participation for the second season of the 100% electric off-road category planned to continue growing.

The British made a ceremony in style to present their ODYSSEY 21, but it was not until they made contact with the field of Jurassic X Prix, where the initial Extreme E campaign ended, that they got the first impressions of the vehicle that will be driven by Tanner Foust and Emma Gilmour.

The New Zealand driver arrived at the test with previous experience on this division, since she was behind the wheel of Veloce Racing when Jamie Chadwick was fully dedicated to the W Series, competition where she was crowned champion. On the other hand, the British experienced his first contact with the 1,780 kilos stunning car.

“It was good, we had a really productive first morning, the car was on a pretty good window, so we were able to try a few different things to see how it reacts. It was going really well,” Gilmour said about the feeling of the McLaren XE ODYSSEY 21.

On the other hand, Foust assured that they made a number of new changes for both drivers despite Emma’s experience. During the test, they tried new ways where the McLaren car delivered power from the front to the rear in the electrified powertrain, rather than with springs and alignment changes.

“It’s like a fourth dimension, you can use the steering angle to determine how much power is sent where and it’s all the things you dream about ‘what if you could do this’ and now we’re testing it.”

One of the keys deciphered by the team is knowing how to play with the power delivered by each motor. One located in the front and the other in the rear, making a difference with other extreme competitions. In this way, McLaren XE is expected to play a key role in the development of Extreme E, and why not, fight from the start to be champions.

Dorset, United Kingdom, the stage chosen to define the Extreme E, between Rosberg X Racing and X44, who decided the championship after disputing the Jurassic X Prix. RXR won after a heart-stopping finish and with just enough to make history and become the first monarchs of the off-roaders 100% electric division.

After an action-packed Saturday session, everything was left to be defined on Sunday at the two Semifinals, Crazy Race and of course the Final Race. In Semifinal 1, X44 took control of the situation and finished first, as did RXR in Semifinal 2, sealing the duel for the final outcome.

At the Crazy Race, Timmy Hansen of Andretti United took an important advantage while completing the first lap, leaving the table set for the local driver, Catie Munnings, to set the best time of the session and earn the right to be at the Final Race. With a fright included, as Sara Price, from Chip Ganassi, got dangerously close at the end of the lap, threatening the possibility of moving on to the next stage.

Rosberg X Racing and X44: All or Nothing

With everything decided for the Final Race, X44 and Rosberg X Racing were accompanied by ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team, JBXE and Andretti United for the title definition. In order for the team of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton to be crowned monarch, it had to win this instance and score the five additional points awarded by the Continental Traction Challenge. On the other hand, Nico Rosberg and company only had to finish fourth to secure the season trophy.

At the start and through the center of the circuit, Cristina Gutiérrez (X44) started with everything and quickly moved into first position, something completely natural given the need to win to have a chance of victory on Dorsert. However, Molly Taylor (RXR) didn’t lose any ground on her and stayed behind her rival, driving cautiously in second position.

Rosberg X Racing’s ODYSSEY 21, however, was losing performance throughout the race, dropping to fourth place and pulling away from the leaders. However, luck was on their side at the end of the race due to a slight touch between Catie Munnings (Andretti United) and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky (JBXE).

At the driver changeover, nervousness gripped all those waiting for the definition of the championship. Sébastien Loeb (X44) drove with everything to take the first victory of the inaugural season of Extreme E, although with a little sadness at the loss of the title, as Johan Kristoffersson took the car to the end in fourth position to win with just enough to make history as the first champions of the 100% electric off-road series.

After waiting a few weeks, the time has come to define who will be the first Extreme E champion. From 18 to 19 December in Dorset, UK, the Jurassic X Prix will be held where Rosberg X Racing and X44 will fight side by side to win the title and make history at the electric off-road category; however, a section of the circuit could complicate things.

The series has ‘extreme’ in the name for a reason: to make the tracks a real challenge where drivers have to adapt to find a way to overcome obstacles, which can be slippery, rocky, wet or sticky roads. Although, for the closing of the inaugural campaign, the inventiveness of the creators has placed a jump to be feared.

The ODYSSEY 21 is designed to withstand these bumps. The vehicle’s suspension has the flexibility to adapt to tricky situations. Molly Taylor, RXR driver, has demonstrated twice in the past that the car can flip over without structural or mechanical damage, of course, depending on the force of the impact.

Precisely, in Dorset will be placed to test the endurance of this 1,780 kilograms beast by means of a jump on the circuit, which, if performed poorly, could end the ride of any driver, including those fighting for the victory and the Extreme E championship, as well as the rest of the competitors.

In addition to the battle between Rosberg X Racing and X44, third place in the championship is also up for grabs. Andretti United, JBXE, ABT Cupra and Acciona | Sainz XE Team are all in with a chance of taking this position, so they will need to be extra cautious when navigating this area of the Jurassic X Prix, as the race could end early at any moment.

For any pilot, the feeling of competing at home becomes one of the most desired moments to live. For Catie Munnings will be no exception, as the final battle of Extreme E will take place in Dorset, UK, where the British driver will have the opportunity to fight for the podium at home on Andretti United’s ODYSSEY 21.

Throughout the season, Rosberg X Racing has mastered all the victories except for the Artic X Prix, where Munnings and Timmy Hansen took the win on the icy Greenland track. The car has the potential for a win, and although the contest promises to be close, the driver’s minimum aspirations are at least a podium finish.

Andretti United is fighting side by side with JBXE for third place in the championship. Only one point is between the two to make history and be among the top three teams of the inaugural season for the 100% electric off-road category. Therefore, the team will go all out to ‘finish the campaign as they started’, that is, with a podium finish.

“We know we’re capable of doing it and it’s absolutely our plan to finish the year on a high, and a top-three result is something we’re confident we can achieve. We had the pace in both Greenland and Sardinia, but it didn’t go the way we wanted it to last time,” said Munnings.

The pace in Dorset is there, the Briton says, asserting that she and her teammate can battle at the front of the race. Catie points to her rally experience while Timmy does the same at Rallycross to create a mix that suits the race conditions.

The mud factor will also play a key role. However, Munnings is confident she can deal with that obstacle during the competition ‘… It’s even better and definitely something I’m used to! Dorset is also my home race, not only for me, but also for United Autosports, so it will be an honor to represent the UK at the final race of Extreme E. I can’t wait!’.

Finally, Catie won’t be alone as the UK representative in Dorset, as Jamie Chadwick, W Series champion and Veloce Racing driver will be there alongside Xite Energy Racing’s Oliver Bennett.

The Extreme E final battle will take place December 18-19 in Dorset, UK. There, Rosberg X Racing and X44 are playing for glory to make history in the category as the first champions; however, further down the field, the fight is also intense with up to four teams with the same interest in common: third place.

Andretti United Extreme E, JBXE, ABT Cupra XE and ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team will be the protagonists of a great battle aiming to reach the podium of the competition, so the Dorset track will be more than just the final race of the 100% electric off-road category.

Andretti and JBXE have been quite consistent during the championship, in fact, they have several podium finishes to their credit. The gap between the two is only one point (93 and 92 respectively), so excitement is fully assured from these two teams, but at the same time, they should drive with caution, as any mistake will end with their aspirations.

Andretti United Extreme E (Photo: Colin McMaster)

“Our goal is to finish the season as we started it, with a podium! We know we are capable of doing that and it is absolutely our plan to finish the year on a high, and a top-three result is something we are confident we can achieve. We had the pace on both Greenland and Sardinia, but it didn’t go the way we wanted it last time” stated Catie Munnings, Andretti United’s driver.

Related content: Less than 7 Days to Glory: All or Nothing for RXR and X44

JBXE also has serious aspirations to finish third, and that’s how Kevin Hansen sees it, “Anything can happen at Extreme E, and I think we proved that in Greenland and Sardinia, just to make sure we can take the car as far as we can, and fast as possible. That will be our mentality heading into the Final series: we’ll try to do the best job we can, prepare as well as we can and go from there.”

Further down are ABT Cupra XE and ACCIONA | Sainz XE on fifth and sixth place, respectively. The former accumulates 83 points, while the latter registers 78, and although it seems a complicated mission, they still have a chance to climb up to third place, as they have shown a good race pace at various stages of the campaign.

“Another place, another challenge, that’s what Extreme E is all about. When I look at the circuit and the weather app on my phone, we can expect a lot of rain and mud. It will be fun as long as all the doors are closed on my car until the finish line…”, Mattias Ekström sentenced.

Acciona | Sainz XE Team (Photo: Zak Mauger)

Finally, Albert Fàbrega, Team Manager at ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team, expects his drivers to give their all to show a good pace in the last performance: “This is the last chance we have, so we will be putting everything we have into the car to make it as reliable as possible, because we know that Laia and Carlos will give their best. The only thing we have to do is work to try to get a good set-up and give them the car to achieve a good result”.

One of the most striking factors about Extreme E is the commitment to sustainability at every venue visited. Of course, facing the closure of the inaugural season in Dorset, UK, the Legacy Programme could not miss the region where the Jurassic X Prix will be held to define the first champion of the category.

On this occasion, the 100% electrified off-road division’s program is extending the support of the National Trust to improve biodiversity in Great Britain. This organization was founded in 1895 to protect and conserve historic sites, landscapes and natural habitats.

Over the years, the work has spread widely, to the point of having almost 250,000 hectares and 780 miles of coastline under the protection and care of the National Trust. One of the places that stands out is the Purbeck Heaths, located in Dorset. There, they have worked together to create the first ‘super’ National Reserve in the United Kingdom.

The 8,231-acre site includes 11 essential wildlife habitats, as well as the inclusion of Hartland Moor, Arne, Brownsea Island and Studland and Godlingston Heaths, the site’s iconic reserves. By next year, the National Trust aims to reintroduce beavers back into the Studland dune system at Purbeck.

“Through our Legacy Programme and the Jurassic X Prix, we aim to highlight biodiversity-related issues in the UK. We are delighted that our work in Dorset will enable us to support the National Trust, which is planning to reintroduce beavers to the area,” said Alejandro Agag, CEO and founder of Extreme E.

Such work by the electrical division highlights the importance of biodiversity and well-functioning ecosystems to human existence. “I am excited to see what we can achieve together with an organization with such high standards of conservation and curatorial care that has been recognized around the world,” continued Agag.

Jamie Chadwick is back on the ODYSSEY 21 after returning as the reigning W Series champion. However, this time he will have Lance Woolridge as his new teammate.

The South African will replace Stéphane Sarrazin, receiving his first opportunity in Extreme E to act as a starter after an important role throughout the debut campaign of the electric off-road category, as advisor to several teams and reserve and development driver, ready to jump as soon as an opportunity arose.

Woolridge arrives with enough endorsement to be behind the wheel of the ODYSSEY 21: Double South African Cross Country Series (SACCS) Class T Production Vehicle winner (2018-2019) and FIA SACCS runner-up. His resume at the off-road level allows him to take on this challenge with confidence and enthusiasm.

“Lance has been doing a fantastic job as our reserve and development driver this season, as well as having a great year racing in South Africa, so we are delighted to give him this opportunity,” he continued.

He also highlighted Chadwick’s return to finish the inaugural Extreme E campaign on a high note, which captivated from the outset and throughout the course of which he was able to position himself in sustainable motorsport, win prestigious accolades and bring a different vision on how to address the effects of climate change.

“Likewise, Jamie has had an incredible year in the W Series and got our first podium in Senegal, let’s not forget, so he certainly knows his way around the ODYSSEY 21. Together, these two drivers will be a potent combination,” he concluded.
