More than a month ago, Extreme E arrived at the remote village of Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, for the third Arctic X Prix of the season. There, the competition was emotionally charged from start to finish, and off the track, the sustainable, social and educational work of the category also stood out, to the extent that the work continues there to this day.

Information about climate change and what to do to fight it was one of the many things the electrified off-road division did at the location. Now, during Climate Week, which began on September 27, more educational resources on this topic were deployed to approximately 2,000 young people between the ages of 14 and 16.

In order to reach this number of people, Extreme E and Unicef segmented the work into two phases. The first consisted on talking to teenagers from five different regions about how climate change affects their localities. They were also instructed with examples of climate activism.

The second part of the program involved reflection exercises to understand what is really happening, as well as the delicate nature of the problem for the Earth. The young people also developed their own projects to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute in building a better future.

“At UNICEF, we believe that it is critical for children to understand and be able to contribute to solving the issues that affect them. As children and young people have reminded us in recent years, they are powerful agents of change who can mobilize much-needed change when they are informed and involved around the key debates of their time…,” said Maliina Abelsen, Chief of Programs for UNICEF Greenland.

“…We, and the partners we work with in Greenland, are delighted to contribute to the excellent climate education resources, and have received encouraging feedback from teachers who are excited to start teaching at Climate Week,” she concluded.

During the debut season, Extreme E organizers have had to overcome all kinds of obstacles to bring their exciting races to destinations hit by climate change.

It already happened with the event planned to be held in South America, postponed, and now the fifth and final day is a real question mark for Alejandro Agag, founder of the tournament, and company.

“There are several options, what happens again is the red list of the COVID, we are looking at it. We have Egypt, Greece, and Morocco. We are going to see which one we can do. This month I will be traveling to see if we can define the last race,” stated Agag to the press in Madrid.

In love with Greenland

At the end of the last joust in the Arctic, the Spaniard was pleasantly impressed with the experience and does not hesitate to confirm that place for the 2022 Extreme E season.

“I think Greenland is positioned as the symbol of the competition now. This race became a classic. It’s like our Monaco if we were Formula 1,” he said.

He added that what he experienced in that competition really symbolizes what is happening on the planet with the melting of the poles, climate change. “We went there to draw attention to what is happening and to take that message as far as possible,” said Agag.

Thinking about Season 2

Despite the headache of pulling off the first season, Agag is already cooking up the second edition of Extreme E. He said he intends to keep the five-race calendar until 2022, with three days and two new events to showcase climate change in other landscapes. He also confirmed that there is a good chance that Saudi Arabia will once again open the series, albeit in a different location than the Diriyah desert.

He noted that the calendar is set to be announced soon, and hinted that Brazil will feature in the planning for next year, following the unfortunate suspension for the inaugural campaign.

Regarding teams, Agag also confirmed that he has been in talks with four or five different manufacturers who have expressed interest in the category. Again, nothing is confirmed, but the current belief among organizers is the way the tournament ends this year will be the tipping point for interested teams.

Andretti United has shown a competitive spirit from the start of Extreme E, reaffirming their commitment race after race until getting the reward expected by all: Victory. Their drivers, Catie Munnings and Timmy Hansen, proved to be up to the task in Greenland by winning the Artic X Prix.

Andretii’s results are a reflection of what they have shown on previous X Prix. In Saudi Arabia, a very good performance was reflected in the result, unfortunately marred by a flat tire, but the team still reached the podium. Then, in Senegal, challenges were too demanding, relegating the team to the last place in the standings.

Munnings and Hansen were able to manage the pace of the race aboard the ODYSSEY 21 E-SUV, winning the semi-final to sneak into the final. There, the British driver swapped positions with Sebastien Loeb of X44, and Molly Taylor of Rosberg X Racing. Then it was the turn of the Swedish Andretti driver, who also showed a great level to win after a great battle against Johan Kristoffersson and his Rosberg X Racing, championship leader.

Andretti is now third overall in Extreme E, eager to deal a lethal blow to Nico Rosberg’s and Lewis Hamilton’s teams, at the slightest mistake of their drivers at the track. In fact, Munnings and Hansen are renewed for next season, which gives them some peace of mind to drive with a clear head regarding their future.

“What a dream result for the team. The driving conditions here (Greenland) were extremely challenging, but Catie and Timmy showed courage and maturity behind the wheel, both taking care of the car but setting phenomenal pace when it mattered most. With two rounds remaining and judging by this weekend’s performance, Andretti United Extreme E certainly has a great chance of becoming the first Extreme E series champion,” said Michael Andretti, team co-owner.

For Munnings, it is still a dream to have won the Artic X Prix after starring alongside some of his childhood heroes (Sebastian Loeb). Besides, she highlighted the important work of her teammate by keeping the competitive pace, being able to take advantage of the spaces while taking care of the car at the same time.

On the other hand, Hansen confessed that he arrived at the race day with a winning mentality, and he achieved it, although he still feels surreal at the moment. However, he was quick to point out the commitment of the category after visiting Greenland to race where a glacier once stood. “Congratulations to Extreme E, they pulled off a race at the most extreme environments out in the middle of nowhere and that is an incredible achievement.”

After a successful debut, Off Track, Extreme E’s podcast, is back with a bang for its second episode, taking a closer look at what happened at the Artic X Prix in Greenland, where Andretti United with Catie Munnings y Timmy Hansen took the win after a series of events defined the competition from start to finish.

Rosberg X Racing looked set to take control of the race in Greenland. However, the vehicle broke down after a hard spin and subsequent impact on the ground while Johan Kristoffersson was behind the wheel. X44, on the other hand, was on a good pace, but a flat tire slowed them considerably at the pits.

“This weekend in Extreme E had everything,” said James Baldwin, one of the podcast hosts. The competition was adrenaline-packed from start to finish, with surprising winners reinvigorating the Championship ahead of the next round in Italy.

Off Track

The first episode featured Molly Taylor as a special guest, detailing how her main dream was not to be a rally driver, turning her destiny upside down until she reached the 100% electrified off-road category.

Moreover, it is worth remembering that the Extreme E’s mission is to promote sustainability on motorsports, as well as generating a consciousness change on people, especially new generations regarding climate change.

In Greenland, the progressive disappearance of glaciers was the topic to be addressed. In fact, electrified vehicles transited through what was once part of the Russell Glacier, which until some years ago was a huge mass of ice, but due to climate change has vanished; therefore, awareness campaigns and appropriate information, such as those led by Extreme E, are becoming increasingly necessary.

Additionally, a school that did not have electricity because it was far from the city, received help from Xite Energy Racing, through the construction of a solar panel to support the education of the youngest in the area, who throughout their lives have been relying on a diesel generator located in the courtyard that heavily polluted the area.

The first day of Extreme E racing at the Artic X-Prix in Greenland was marked by a high number of retirements from participating teams. With one departure from the first qualifying round and three during the second one, the track showed that there is still room for improvements on the Odyssey 21, the competition’s official vehicle.

The X44 drivers, crew of the Formula 1 multichampion Lewis Hamilton, headed the day with a great performance of Cristina Gutierrez, who recovered in record time to be present, as well as the always competitive Sebastien Loeb.

Initial Qualifying

The initial X44 attempt on the 8.6-kilometer Kangerlussuaq circuit began with Gutierrez. Starting as the eighth of the nine teams to take place in Qualifying 1 at Russell Glacier, the Spaniard headed into the driver change area with a deficit of just 3.41 seconds before handing over to Loeb.

The eight-time world rally champion set the fastest individual lap of the session, posting a time of 5:46.155 and combining with Gutierrez’s attempt to reach a lead of 3.712 seconds.

The strong performance by the Hamilton boys left Abt CUPRA, featuring Mattias Ekstrom and 2001 Dakar Rally winner Jutta Kleinschmidt, in second place ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing.

One of the unfortunate notes of Qualifying 1 was Jenson Button’s JBXE, which was unable to complete even one lap due to car failure.

Q1 table

X44 (Gutiérrez / Loeb) 13:45.235

ABT Cupra (Kleinschmidt / Ekstrom) +3.712

Ganassi (Price / LeDuc) +6.396

Veloce (Gilmour / Sarrazin) +34.201

Xite Energy (Giampaoli Zonca / Bennett) +51.742

Acciona Sainz (Sanz / Sainz) +55.645

Andretti United (Munnings / T. Hansen) +1:29.950

Rosberg X Racing (Taylor / Kristoffersson) +1:44.403

JBXE (Ahlin-Kottulinsky / K. Hansen) +1 lap

Second Qualifying

Stage two brought out the Extreme E leaders with a bang. Both Molly Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson of Rosberg X Racing posted solid laps to beat X44 by 10.9 seconds. This result allowed the championship leading team to regain what they lost in the first session, and aspire to the second Semifinal, which looked difficult after the rollover at the first round in the morning.

The X44 had a very positive second round again, and with an outstanding but conservative lap by Loeb and Gutierrez, they secured the first place in the standings with a new reference for the second session, about 4 seconds faster than JBXE. Andretti United was seconds away from taking the top spot as Timmy Hansen made an incredible comeback, but it was only enough to put him ahead of JBXE by a couple of tenths.

Q2 Table

Rosberg X Racing (Taylor / Kristoffersson) 14:26.647

X44 (Gutierrez / Loeb) +10.951

Andretti United (Munnings / T. Hansen) +14.917

JBXE (Ahlin-Kottulinsky / K. Hansen) +15.455

Acciona Sainz (Sanz / Sainz) +30.377

Veloce (Gilmour / Sarrazin) +1:56.163

ABT Cupra (Kleinschmidt / Ekstrom) +1 lap

Xite Energy (Giampaoli Zonca / Bennett) +2 laps

Ganassi (Price / LeDuc) +2 laps

If anything has been clear at the Extreme E season kickoff, it’s the dominance that Rosberg X Racing has shown at the Saudi Arabian and Senegalese X Prix. So, to know if they can continue to be at the top is a question that the fans are wondering ahead of the Artic X Prix, the third event of the calendar, considering the high level of the X44 Team, the main rival.

Two consecutive victories by Nico Rosberg’s team extended their lead in the overall standings, with 71 points. Nevertheless, Lewis Hamilton’s team (X44) topped the qualifying times, showing the battle between the two teams will be full of action and adrenaline.

Greenland will serve as the battleground when the ODYSSEY 21 off-roaders ride across what was once the mighty Russell Glacier, now just a salt rock. There, what was once a war between Rosberg and Hamilton will be transferred to the electric rally category by their drivers.

Rosberg X Racing’s Outlook

All this has prompted Nico Rosberg to express about the team’s chance for a third win in a row. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the series with two wins in the first two races, to our credit. But it would be foolish to go into this round predicting the same result for the team. We are working very hard to achieve another solid result in Greenland and I can’t wait to see how it plays out over the weekend.”

Molly Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson will start at the Artic X Prix as cautiously as possible, given that Sébastien Loeb and Gutiérrez have shown great competitive pace that may ultimately turn into a win as the category develops in Greenland to narrow the X44 Team and Rosberg X Racing gap of just 14 points.

“I was really proud of our performances in Senegal and Saudi Arabia, but we had some bad luck in the finale. I’m sure this time we can learn from what happened and ensure we get another podium,” asserted Loeb.

The Extreme E excitement grows increasingly as the 2021 season progresses. This time, Greenland will host the next X Prix on August 28-29. The event, however, will feature a series of new innovations implemented to experiment new ways to increase competitiveness.

The Artic X Prix will be held in Kangerlussuaq and will witness new updates to its sporting format, including a points split awarded after intermediate qualifying sessions; modified route to semi-finals; opportunity to advance to the finals of all races; and a five-car finale competition.

On August 28, Saturday, two qualifying sessions will be held, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, where each team will complete two laps of the course and 9 points will be distributed to the best time, 8 to the runner-up and so on. These points will be pooled together to provide the intermediate ranking that was previously recorded in time, as was the case in Saudi Arabia and Senegal.

This new update will promote a more competitive environment where smaller teams will have the opportunity to start ahead if they perform well, and will have a second chance in case of poor timing or disqualification.

New Format, New Thrills in Extreme E

Now the teams finishing first, fifth and sixth will advance to Semifinal 1, while second, third and fourth will progress to Semifinal 2, with seventh, eighth and ninth going into the Crazy Race.

The two top finishers from Semi-Final 1 and 2, along with the Crazy Race winner, will battle on Sunday, August 29th, in the final 5-team race, with points being distributed as follows: 25 points for first, 19 for the second place, 18 to third, 15 to fourth and 12 to fifth. The team finishing in the second third position of Semifinal 1 will receive 10 points, the third in Semifinal 2 will receive 8 points, leaving 6 points for the Crazy Race winner and 4 points for the second.

It is worth noting that new points system to define the starting grid will not affect the overall Championship leaderboard, so the scoring process in the race will be distributed as follows: 12 points to the winner, 11 to the runner-up, 10 to the third and so on until reaching the ninth place, with 4 units.

“As a series, we are always ready to evolve in order to create the best overall result, and we believe these format changes will offer more competition and even more exciting races for our global fan base,” said Alejandro Agag, Extreme E founder and CEO.

The Artic X Prix will have a new battle in the Extreme E. There, Rosberg X Racing and X44 will fight at the top with the intention of winning the dispute over the Artic X Prix. However, for this race, they will have to fight hard, not only against each other but against three rivals who are ready to reach the next level.

Andretti United Extreme E, ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team and Xite Energy Racing are in the middle of the standings, wanting to achieve higher goals, and Greenland seems to be the right place for them, so action, competition, adrenaline and speed will join them during the weekend surrounded by the freezing weather.

In the fourth place is Andretti (37 units) with their pilots Timmy Hansen and Catie Munnings, who are aware that a good result in the Artic X Prix will make them take off a bit. Their season so far has been a climb and low, because in Saudi Arabia they was amazing, but in Senegal they suffered a lot.

“Saudi was a dream event for us but in Senegal, we got unlucky – the conditions were tough and very different from those in Saudi where the bumps were more predictable”, says Munnings.

On the other hand, Xite Energy (37 points) with Oliver Bennett and Christine Giampaoli Zonca come from starring in a real pitched battle against Veloce Racing in Senegal, being very close to sneaking into the last race of the day, finishing in the sixth place putting 17 points in their pockets.

Extreme E: Intense battle in Greenland

“I’m super excited about competing at the Artic X Prix in Greenland. The course will be very challenging from what I’ve seen and with one point covering three places in the standings it’s going to be the biggest fight we’ve had on our hands all season”, says Bennett.

ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team will be performing in Greenland with their both drivers, Carlos Sainz and Laia Sanz. They stopped the clock in very good times, more than one occasion they painted purple in Senegal, but mechanical problems were present and prevented an outcome that could have been better in the race.

“To be honest, Greenland is an unknown territory for us” Laia continues. “We have little information about the surface and the layout, but our goal is to give our best and get to the Final. The target is to be among the best and to show our true speed”, says Laia Sainz.

This weekend the Extreme E will have its third X-Prix (28/29 August) in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland.
