A few days after unveiling the powerful new third-generation (Gen3) car during a gala in Monaco, Formula E continues to make important moves to further lay the groundwork for a competition that is constantly evolving.

This week, event organizers announced that Brazil will join the electric single-seater series calendar for 2023 on a five-year contract with renewal options.

The inclusion of the Amazonian country is the fourth novelty in the Formula E planning, which will also have South Africa, India and the rescheduling of Vancouver as debut venues.

Sao Paulo will host the race, a city that had already appeared in the provisional calendars of Formula E in the 2017-2018 season, but was finally ruled out by the event held in Punta del Este.

Although the official reason given was that the city authorities had asked to postpone the race, it did not appear in the draft calendars for the following year.

Awaiting Confirmation

While it is true that a pact has already been reached between Formula E and the Brazilian promoters, final approval of the place is still pending from the FIA World Motor Sport Council, scheduled for June.

“The country has a huge and long-standing passion for motorsport, it’s a big market being one of the biggest countries in the world, and Sao Paulo itself is a historic racing venue,” said Event Director Alberto Longo.

“We can’t wait to welcome the Brazilian fans, they are like no other and there is sure to be a lively and unique atmosphere as fans enjoy Formula E racing with the leap forward in technology and performance we are going to see with Gen3,” he added.

For his part, the Mayor of Sao Paulo, Ricardo Nunes highlighted that hosting an E-Prix is fully aligned with the city’s objectives to attract events that promote the image of the metropolis to the entire world, activate the economy and create jobs with event tourism and foster sustainable development.

The race is scheduled to take place at the Sambódromo do Anhembi, which already hosted the Sao Paulo IndyCar Indy 300 race between 2010 and 2013, with the intention that the event will be held on March 24 and 25, three weeks after Carnival.

With just over three months to go until the E-Prix in Jakarta, Indonesia, scheduled for the weekend of June 4, the event is giving promoters more headaches than satisfaction. This week, the event’s organizers declared that the capacity planned to accommodate 50,000 spectators will have to be reduced to 10,000.

Irawan Sucahyono, a member of the Executive Committee preparing the Formula E race, was in charge of making the announcement. Despite the large reduction in capacity for fans, the executive did not rule out the possibility that as work on the circuit progresses, this number could increase.

“We could have 10,000 live fans, although this number could increase depending on how the project develops and the evaluation made by Formula E later on,” Sucahyono said.

These statements contrast with the comments made last December by Widi Amanasto, director of PT yakarta Propertindo, main sponsor of the E-Prix. Amanasto pointed out that such was the expectation sown by the series of electric single-seaters that they were going to set up extra areas to increase capacity and avoid chaos inside the circuit.

Hectic Organization

The race on Indonesian soil has unleashed a storm of obstacles. In the first instance, politicians opposed to the city’s government authorities criticized the fact that, in the midst of a deep economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, resources were being allocated for a non-priority sporting event.

However, the Indonesian government received an endorsement from Formula E. Series Director Alberto Longo expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s participation. He valued the efforts of the country’s President, Joko Widodo, to reduce dependence on conventional energy and switch to environmentally friendly production.

Specifically on the resources earmarked for the race, Longo stated last December that there was nothing to hide: “We like transparency. We also transparently ask people in Jakarta because there is nothing to hide here.”

Another complication involved in the event is the construction of the street circuit. The works, although still on schedule, presented difficulties to work on the layout, since about 40% of the total length is swampy ground to carry out the corresponding work.

The site determined for the event consists of 2,400 meters with 18 curves and a straight track of about 527 meters.

The start of season 8 of ABB FIA Formula E is getting closer. The news and details regarding the new edition of the competition are beginning to take shape, and one of them has been the new Safety Car to be used in the new edition of the competition, as the Porsche Taycan Turbo S was revealed as the official vehicle.

The inaugural race for the 100% electric single-seater category will take place from January 28 to 29 in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, and there, the first electrified car of the German brand will debut as a fundamental part of Formula E, adapting internal and external characteristics to be the right one to do the job.

Its handling, safety and reliability are combined with 560 kW (760 horsepower), managing to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.8 seconds, and reaching a maximum speed of 260 kilometers. It is ready to show off its great design and power at prestigious cities such as London, New York, Berlin, Monaco and Seoul.

Now, to adapt the Porsche Taycan Turbo S to fit its new job, there were several tasks to be performed. Introducing a roll cage, racing seats, six-point seat belts, wire harnesses for lighting and the Marelli Logger System. In addition, it also features a fire extinguisher and a high-tech communication system.

Now, regarding the aesthetic design, the new features are also impressive. The vehicle’s paintwork is a tribute to the 11 teams on the official grid of the electric division, as well as those of both FIA and FE to convey a clear message: “together towards commitment and development of electrified mobility”.

It will also carry the number 22 to represent that number of drivers participating in the category. “Formula E is delighted that the Porsche Taycan Turbo S will serve as the Championship Safety Car from Season 8 onwards,” commented Jamie Reigle, CEO of competition.

“We are proud that Formula E has entrusted a Porsche with this task, which is important for the protection of its drivers. With the Taycan Turbo S as the official safety car, we are making an important contribution to safety on the track and also underlining the importance of the category for our brand,” said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport.

ROKiT Venturi Racing has become a hot topic at Formula E for two reasons. First, the good results obtained during Season 7, and second, the confirmation of Lucas di Grassi as the team’s driver for the Season 8. Susie Wolff, team leader, has therefore clearly defined the team’s objectives.

To be on the points with both cars at every E Prix. This is how the team boss sees the performance of Edoardo Mortara and Lucas di Grassi, describing the presence of both cars on the grid as “fundamental”, in order to fight hard for the team championship.

“Having both cars scoring points at every race is essential for us for the Teams’ Championship and with our new driver lineup, there is a lot to be optimistic about for Season 8,” Wolff said, according to Thecheckeredflag.

There is no doubt about the ambition of the Monegasque team after seeing Mortara fight for the drivers’ title, falling just seven points behind champion Nyck de Vries. However, the collective results were not as expected. Norman Nato did not perform as expected and therefore, the need to go for di Grassi became inevitable.

Strong Contenders

“Moving into Season 8, Lucas joins Edo, a proven Formula E Championship winner who also brings a wealth of experience. They will push each other and push us forward as a team,” he continued.

Everything seems to be on the table for the ROKiT team to make a splash next season, or at least to be consistently scoring points as Wolff rightly pointed out, a fundamental goal of the organization to be able to aim big at the 100% electric single-seater category.

On the other hand, as Team Manager, she will have to impose her leadership when making decisions that may harm a specific driver but benefit the organization, since a battle between the two drivers is what will be experienced at every E Prix, and with this, the pressure to know how to manage the character and the desire to win of both will be fundamental for the stability of the team.

A pioneer of the ABB FIA Formula E (FE), Lucas di Grassi is getting ready for a new season around the best circuits in the world, with clear objectives and goals for the eighth campaign. Therefore, many are wondering what to expect from the Brazilian driver in this new stage of his career.

Although he continues at FE, now he will race for ROKiT Venturi Racing alongside Edoardo Mortara. A change always requires time to adapt, therefore, the champion of the category will have the clock against him, because a driver of his importance, coupled with the competitive single-seater he will have, can not afford to take too long to grasp the car.

Therefore, the objectives are clear, to fight race by race for the victory and to harvest important points to endorse his main goal: to become Formula E champion again, and of course, he has the necessary guarantees to achieve it. Indeed, if he had not found a really competitive team, the seventh season would surely have been the Brazilian’s last on board electric cars.

Objectives of Lucas di Grassi

Those are the goals that are Lucas di Grassi’s priority for the eighth season at individual level. Now, together with Mortara, he will have to work hard to lead ROKiT Venturi Racing to the Team Title.

Watch out ROKiT!

The Monegasque team must be very cautious with the moves it has just made. Lucas di Grassi and Edoardo Mortara are great drivers. Neither of them will want to act as the other’s squire, which means that it is likely that on more than one occasion there will be big fights on tracks that could jeopardize team points in case of a possible incident on circuit.

Will they have to give team orders, will they assign a driver 1 and 2? It is still too early to tell and it will surely be revealed during the coming season of the 100% electric single-seater category, although di Grassi seems to be the favorite to take the reins of the organization of Formula E due to his endorsement, curriculum and talent.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) recognizes the commitment of the NIO 333 team to sustainability by awarding the highest level of environmental certification through the FIA 3 Star Accreditation, joining a select group of teams to have such distinction in Formula E.

The green plans, management and actions have allowed the organization to take this recognition after demonstrating a real interest in combating climate change through its #TogetherWeCanMakeItBetter campaign, where issues such as bio-diversity and waste management were addressed.

“FIA congratulates NIO 333 on receiving Three Star status within FIA’s Environmental Accreditation, the highest level of certification in our framework. This achievement demonstrates the strong commitment of the team to environmental sustainability,” said Jean Todt, President of the highest motorsport organization.

To obtain this accreditation, teams must meet requirements to prove their commitment to the environment, as well as providing proper documentation of everything they have done to support their deserving status. NIO 333 joins ROKiT Venturi Racing, Mahindra Racing, Envision Virgin Racing, Mercedes-EQ and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler as holders.

“In the past season, besides competing at the world’s most competitive motorsport championship, the NIO 333 Formula E team has also actively taken on social responsibility and strived to be a leader for the cause of sustainable development,” sentenced Vincent Wang, the CEO of the team.

The ABB FIA Formula E (FE) has been running for seven seasons and counting. What started as a dream ended up becoming a reality, because nowadays electric vehicles have taken an incredible boom, and everything seems to indicate that projections for this motorsports sector will continue to grow.

It was born as the very first 100% electric single-seater category. Many criticized it and others supported it, but the truth is that heading into the eighth season is stronger than ever. Therefore, we bring you five moments confirming the FE’s strength, when high-profile drivers got into a car from the electrified division of the FIA.

Emanuele Pirro

A Mahindra Gen1 single-seater was tested by Emanuele Pirro at Imola Circuit (2018). The four-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans dared to experience sensations of a vehicle of this type: fast, sustainable and silent, those were the characteristics that caught his attention, so much so that he did a couple of extra laps than the ones he had planned to run.

Robert Kubica

Known in the Formula 1 world for being born again, as in 2007 he suffered a terrible accident during the Canadian Grand Prix, where his car was totally destroyed, but luckily he came out unscathed. The following year he had his revenge and won at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. Now, after several years, he climbed into a Formula E car at Donignton Park in 2017, working on his return to the Grand Circus, and secretly completed a test race, according to The-Race.

Alex Palou

Back in 2016, Alex Palou raced at Calafat for a half-day of racing with other drivers who were being evaluated by Dilbagh Gill, Mahindra Racing boss. “We tested a few drivers and Alex was one that summer. He was based in Barcelona at the time, so he actually did a couple of tests and was quite useful,” he told The Race.

Esteban Ocon

The French Formula 1 sensation currently competes alongside Fernando Alonso at Alpine, but back in 2015 he dared to feel the power and speed of Formula E during the Pau Grand Prix aboard the Spark SR_01 Renault at the demonstration program for the public. At that time he was coming from being European F3 champion and was on the verge of winning GP3 (now called Formula 3).

The commitment of ABB Formula E (FE) to sustainable initiatives has been part of their internal policy since its inception, both inside and outside the circuits. Therefore, a new partnership has been born to combat and address one of the most worrying issues regarding climate change: global warming.

The 100% electric single-seater category became the first sport in the world to join the Science Based Targets (SBTi) Program and the Business Ambition Pledge for the 1.5° Celsius commitment. Let’s remember that the planet is facing serious problems with temperature, and if it continues to rise, it will reach a dreaded point of no return, according to several experts.

Now, to address this sensitive issue, FE will work together with the SBTi, an entity that functions as a partnership between the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the CDP and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Together, and now with the electrified category as a new member of the global Race To Zero campaign, the goal is to bring together as many companies as possible to prevent future threats to Earth, generating jobs and creating stability in multiple ways.

One of the new Formula E objectives will be to decrease carbon emissions by 45% in 2030, following the main line of the category concerning air pollution and the fight against climate change. Furthermore, these goals align with the FIA’s #PurposeDriven movement.

“…One year ago, Formula E became the first sport to achieve net zero certification since it started. Today, we achieved another milestone by aligning ourselves with the Science Based Targets initiative, reinforcing our leadership position in the global sport,” said Jamie Reigle, CEO of FE.

From the sustainable motorsport assured that they will continue to fight for change, acting as catalysts and pioneers for the industry when creating global awareness, a factor that is easy to express but difficult to understand, as many people refuse to make minimal changes that will contribute to a healthier future.

It is time to put an end to the massive waste buildup causing high levels of pollution on the planet. Formula E knows it and put their hands up to contribute on the waters of London, very close to the E Prix of the English capital.

The 100% electric single-seater category headed to Canary Wharf and the River Thames to commemorate World Clean Up Day and join a cause where more than 50 million people from over 180 countries have been participating since 2018, when the initiative began.

Electric boats built with recycled plastic extracted from the river, were the means of transportation used by the participants. These were the means of transportation used by the FE at the event organized by Hubbub, with the intention of touring the location for over an hour to remove waste affecting the environmental ecosystem in the waters.

Besides participating on sustainable actions, Formula E has also given a series of new initiatives for awareness and clean behaviors to avoid polluting the seas, something that must be stopped as soon as possible to prevent altering the natural course of life.

Formula E sets an example

To demand, one must first set an example, and that is precisely what Formula E has done since it was created, promoting the use of electric vehicles as a part of everyday urban mobility, being one of the pioneers in the industry by betting on a scenario that was disapproved by many at the time.

Also, it should be noted that since season 5, hydration stations were installed in partnership with Allianz, containing reusable water bags, and, if there are bottles present in the paddock, under no circumstances must they be for single use. In fact, this measure resulted in 300,000 fewer bottles being stored at FE events between January 2019 and March 2020.
