The inaugural season of the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup is rapidly taking shape, as the arrival of a new team has been confirmed: EM Factory Team will be part of history by participating in the debut of the 100% electric off-road motorcycle category, following official confirmation from the series.

EM (Electric Motion) has been a pioneer of electric motorcycles for more than 10 years, designing, developing, promoting and distributing models around the world. Now, it joins the E-Xplorer adventure in order to continue leaving a sustainable footprint through motorsports.

The brand’s track record brings with it great accolades, such as titles in multiple trial championship categories, to competing against the best riders and the best gasoline-powered motorcycles in the world. “From project to reality: definitely the dawn of something great for off-road motorcycling,” the team assures.

Technology Excitement

“At E-Xplorer we think about the future, we are technology enthusiasts and we change the rules of the game to leave a legacy without a trace,” with these words, Valentin Guyonnet, CEO of FIM E-Xplorer World Cup, recently expressed what the new category of electrified motorcycles is all about.

The series will make its debut in the world of zero-emission motor racing. Backed by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and personalities such as Alejandro Agag, it will have 10 teams and 20 riders compete in five global events spanning a combination of urban and natural outdoor venues.

Aiming to tap into the growing appetite for the electrification of motorsport, the category will act as a test bed for two-wheeled technology, as well as attracting the next generation of climate-conscious fans.

“Born out of anti-conformity, we will electrify adventure. Teams made up of two women and one man, relay-style racing on short technical tracks in total gender equality between iconic global venues, from downtown to remote terrain, where every shift, every jump and every second counts, making a mark without a trace,” says FIM E-Xplorer World Cup.

Robbie Maddison, or “Maddo” as he is popularly known, was announced as one of the riders who will compete in the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup in 2022, the 100% electric off-road motorcycle category that promises to make a positive impact as soon as it debuts. But who is “Maddo”?

Maddison is an Australian stuntman born on July 14, 1981, and is known as a legend due to his extensive and award-winning career. He has won gold at the X-Games, as well as world records as a mere notch of all that he has achieved on two wheels.

In 2004 he took the gold medal at the X-Games in Wonderland Sydney after successfully completing 13 backflips. A year later he broke two world records: Guinness World Record for distance (221 feet) on a 125cc motorcycle and world record for distance with a stunt on a 250cc motorcycle after performing the “superman seat grab” stunt.

In 2007, he broke the World Record for Motorcycle Jumping after completing 98.34 meters, and if that wasn’t enough, the following year he broke his own record twice over. Maddison jumped 96.32 meters and 104.42 meters, respectively, during the Crusty Demons Night of World Records program in Melbourne, Australia.

In 2010 he became the first motorcycle racer to cross the Corinth Canal in Greece after jumping more than 80 meters at 120 kilometers per hour. Robbie Maddison’s records continue year after year, making him a high-caliber acquisition for the debut of the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup.

Professional, recognized and skilled hands will be a big draw for fans of the Australian to pay attention to the electrified off-road motorcycle division, which seeks to showcase a new sustainable way of racing, without losing the passion for speed and gaining points for environmental conservation.

A few months ago, the arrival of the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup was announced as a new all-electric sport on board off-road motorcycles that seeks to generate impact at the level of sustainability through competition and all the attractions generated by the races, in addition to contributing to the development of electrified mobility.

Motorcycles are also part of the transition from fossil fuels to green propulsion sources. Getting around on two wheels is one of the most common forms of transportation used in cities and rural areas, so the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup would be playing a fundamental role for manufacturers and their developments in terms of engines, batteries and motorcycle components that will later be required on the track and used in street models.

The expectation generated by the series is great, so many people are wondering when this World Cup will start. So far, the only information that is handled officially regarding the debut of the series is that it will be in 2022.

FIM E-Xplorer World Cup Details

A world-class elite series, this is how the 100% electric off-road motorcycle category is described, which is about to be born and will be endorsed by the International Motorcycling Federation, where 10 teams of two riders each will be part of the official grid, highlighting the equality of conditions by having a male and female rider.

Of the ten participating teams, Maddwill Racing and Seven Racing are two of the confirmed teams, while EMX Powertrain, Electric Motion and M-TEC Motorsport (MUGEN) will be manufacturers.

Five races will be held between urban and rural locations, where on a technical level it is known that the engine will have a maximum weight of 130 kilograms. “I always had the vision that the future of motorsports should be electric, and now we are making it happen. “From the beginning with Formula E, Extreme E, E1 Series and now E-Xplorer,” said Alejandro Agag, a pioneer of sports electrification.

12 teams will participate in theFIM E-Xplorer World Cup,but there’s only space for two of them, because we already know the first two spots: Seven Racing Team and Maddwill Racing. The first of them will be led by James Stewart, Motocross Champion, while the second by Robbie Maddison, world records holder and acrobatic jumps.

Stewart comes into this new transition from motocross with 50 Supercross victories, in addition to being a two-time division champion. In 2013 he took a step beyond the tracks and created his sportswear brand, Seven, now transferring that name to the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup for several years after signing a multi-year contract with the series.

“Throughout my entire career I have seen many big changes in motorcycle racing and I am extremely proud to have been a part of some of them. I believe the future of the sport is inevitably electric and I’m excited to be there from the start with E-Explorer”, said Stewart.

On the other hand, Maddison will come to the championship with his extensive experience in extreme sports, ready for a totally new and electric challenge. Like Stewart, he will be in the competition after agreeing a multi-year contract with the two-wheeled category.

“Racing motorcycles is in my bloodlines, I spent 10 years of my life chasing and winning championships before focusing on setting world records and inventing new tricks at X-Games. I’m excited to be at the forefront of technology and going back to something that I love and have had success at. I see a great opportunity with the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup. I’m looking forward to taking the latest and greatest in technology and going racing!”.

Both teams started the demand for a place in the championship. There are still 10 more organizations to be discovered which bet all in for two wheels and electrification. The first season will officially start in September 2022 through fossil-free engine technology, innovation and gender equality.

From the moment of the announcement, the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup has set to work to ensure the smooth running of the new category of all-electric extreme motorcycling. To date, three manufacturers have been officially confirmed to join the new ride of sustainable motorsports.

The first of these was MUGEN. Taking on a new challenge, the company has been present in the sports sector since 1973. A few weeks after the announcement of the brand, two more arrived, ready to work ‘side by side’ for the category: Electric Motion and EMX Powertrain.

Electric Motion is a French motorcycle manufacturer, a pioneer in its field and currently a participant at the Trial E World Champion. The brand founded by Philippe Aresten in 2009 will dive into urban and rural racing with a lot of experience to contribute to this new challenge.

(Photo: FIM E-Xplorer World Cup)

“I have followed and worked with Philippe for 15 years now where every second I have enjoyed watching Electric Motion progress in both ways, as a company and also in terms of the technology they produce,” said Valentin Guyonnet, founder and CEO of E-Xplorer Founder.

On the other hand, Aresten was pleased to be part of this new two-wheeled electric division, assuring that he has also monitored Guyonnet’s work from the beginning, remained impressed about it. “We share the same passion and originality of the concept as much as the event profile.”

EMX Powertrain is no slouch either. The Dutch company was selected as the third manufacturer for the Championship. This brand was founded in 2018 by Elmar Dohms. A new vision of motorcycling arrived and they knew how to take advantage of it. “We believe this competition will be of great value for the ongoing developments and technologies for the next-generation EMX Powertrain bikes,” Dohms asserted.

On the other hand, Guyonnet was emphatic after assuring that EMX was one of the first brands to respond to interest at the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup, when the series was made official back in the summer of 2021. “Elmar has an enviable track record in electric motor development, along with decades of motocross experience.”

Finally, three brands will work, for the time being, with this new two-wheeled division. However, it should be noted that there is still some way to go on this journey, as other brands have yet to be announced, as the organization has reiterated in several of its official press releases.

FIM E-Xplorer World Cup has confirmed M-TEC Motorsport (MUGEN) as the official manufacturer of the competition, facing a new challenge to be added to its rich history within motorsports, dating back to 1973 after being founded by Hirotoshi Honda.

Manufacturing cars and motorcycles for major categories, such as Formula 1, Super Formula and Sports Cars, TT-Zero, the time has come to write a new page on its historical book after joining the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup, the new fully electrified motorcycle series that promises great thrills and sustainable performance.

“We are very happy to be registered as the official manufacturer for the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup. We are confident that this race will be the best place for us to apply the knowledge we have gained through our participation at the Isle of Man TT-Zero (EV-Bike class) and the continued development of the EV-MX E-REX bike, to challenge ourselves even more,” said S. Katsumata, Director of M-TEC Co., Ltd.

Undoubtedly, the technical and sporting expertise of this brand will contribute significantly to the development of this new championship that has everything to be a pioneer for electric motorcycles, starting this year. Now, MUGGEN will have a complicated challenge, but at its height to ensure the proper operation of the vehicles.

Three demanding circuits, in addition to off-road trails will be part of the challenges to overcome, being available to 10 teams with 20 high-level riders who want to give their best to go far. Precisely, facing these new challenges, Valentin Guyonnet, CEO of E-Xplorer S.A., spoke about it to welcome the brand.

“We are delighted that a brand like M-TEC, deeply immersed in motorsport history and success, has chosen to compete as a factory team in the category. M-TEC has been particularly quick to declare their interest in the series and, after their dominance at the Isle of Man TT-Zero, E-Xplorer would be the next logical step and a significant new challenge for the Japanese team. We are working towards the inaugural World Cup,” he continued.

The FIM E-Xplorer off-road electric motorcycle series has already an official sponsor for the first season of the tournament, scheduled for 2022. It is E-Xplorer SA, designated by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) to hold the commercial rights.

The company’s appointment as the new promoter represents the establishment of an exciting era for motorsports, with the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup acting as the global laboratory for electric two-wheel technology and mobility.

As detailed via a press release, by attracting some of the best-known motorcycle manufacturers, the series will help test and develop the electric two-wheeled technology of the future, on remarkable urban and rural stages around the globe.

Partnership with Values

Both the FIM and E-Xplorer are committed to equality in the sport, which is why this partnership hopes to promote diversity in motorsport. Founded and driven by a team of men and women, E-Xplorer SA will ensure that both genders are represented in all commercial, operational and sporting aspects of the series. With a total of 10 teams, each will compete with one female and one male driver in five events around the world in the inaugural season.

For Valentin Guyonnet, CEO of E-Xplorer SA, the championship is a radically new form of motorsport aimed at progressive generations who believe on the power of sport to drive a positive change.

He considers that joining forces with the world’s top motorcycling governing body and being the global sponsor of the contest is a major milestone for motorsport in general.

For his part, FIM President, Jorge Viegas, highlighted that the announcement marks an important moment for the organization, being the first promoter of the FIM E-Bike Commission (CEB). He assures that the E-Xplorer team will bring a wealth of experience to this series, but equally it is a modern and dynamic organization that reflects the nature of this new championship.

“This is the first all-electric discipline for teams and manufacturers to be held in a combination of off-road and city locations. We believe the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup will act as a proving ground for the development of electric off-road motorcycles,” said Viegas.

With a commitment to sustainability stretching back nearly three decades, the FIM was the first international sports federation to establish an Environmental Code published for the first time since 1994, and in these times ratifies its leading role in the fight against climate change.

The FIM E-Xplorer World Cup promises to leave an indelible mark on motorsports history and sustainability. This is the all-electric off-road motorcycle category, which has Valentin Guyonnet as CEO of the project, who has also told in detail about it.

Since 2013, Guyonnet has worked at the highest levels of world motorsport. FIA and Formula E are part of his experience to be today at the head of this two-wheeled electrified division, which has arisen, according to the CEO, through observation and analysis of the motorcycle industry and its behavior.

“All electric motorcycles are very different as there is no standardization (shape, charging system, motor power, etc.). Electric vehicle buyers are different from gasoline customers, they are young, forward-looking men and women.”

Valentin Guyonnet (Photo: @fimexplorer)

For this reason, the need to provide a globally unique platform at a technical level became apparent in order to satisfy fans, brands and buyers. Also, Guyonnet clarified where the name of this category has come from: “It comes from what motorcycling is all about; freedom and exploration!”.

Tomorrow’s technology will position itself as a fundamental factor for the development of motorsports, so Valentin sees it and firmly believes that sooner or later the major categories must adapt to the new guidelines seen today. “At E-Xplorer we think about the future, we are technology enthusiasts, we change the rules of the game and our challenge is to leave a legacy without a footprint and, at the same time, have lots of fun.”

Finally, the CEO of the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup assured that talks with major manufacturers and personalities of the sport are present, although he did not want to reveal further details about it. “I don’t want to reveal too much, but we are having conversations with established and new manufacturers, MotoGP teams and riders from all sorts of different disciplines.”

The second Virtual Summit organized by Green Racing News, served as a space to highlight the advances in gender equality which in recent years, have been accentuated increased due to the emergence of sustainable motorsport categories.

Nowadays it’s possible to see the presence of a considerable number of women in sectors that were led by men almost entirely. Now, in the paddocks of some car series, sustainable or not, a lot of women are seen in different positions, from journalists and engineers, to project managers and department leaders.

Struggling, Committed and Professional Women at the Service of Motorsport

Examples include Carina Munte, Co-Founder of the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup, and Nita Korhonen, Liaison Director of the International Motorcycling Federation. Both have managed to break down barriers that their gender, unfortunately, has endured for decades and they talked about their reflections in the panel “Bringing more gender diversity and sustainability in Motorsports – Conversation with Leading Women in Motorsports, hosted by Nathalie Capati, Chief Engineer of Evolectric, who was an amazing moderator of the panel.

“We women are amazing. Professionally, we bring complements and unique ideas, we think a bit differently sometimes. However, from my point of view, I believe that the best results are obtained when women and men work together equally,” Munte sentenced.

Munte has extensive experience in the motorsports environment. Several categories have been lucky enough to count on her talent and professionalism, so much so that she endorsed a promising and sustainable nascent category like the FIM E-Xplorer World Cup, an electrified extreme motorcycling division.

“For the last 13 years, I have been working on motorsports. Formula 1, WEC Championship. There, I had the opportunity to learn from great people, many of whom were women, by the way. Also, I was one of the first employees of Formula E and now together with two great men I am taking on a new challenge, a brand new electric championship.”

On the other hand, Korhonen is at the helm of a very big responsibility at the headquarters of the International Motorcycling Federation, doing an impeccable job to make sure everything runs smoothly. “I’ve been involved with motor sports all my life. At FIM, I am responsible for 115 national federations.”

“At FIM we have a 50-50 split between men and women in our headquarters. There are actually slightly more female staff than male staff at the moment. In all 115 federations, we have five women presidents. It’s not a lot, but at the beginning of the year, we had only three, so the growth has been good and of course we expect to have more leaders in the future.”

“Now, I think the problem for the national federations is to point women to the FIM commissions. Many women are unaware of the possibilities they have in motorcycling, and that’s part of our mission, to tell them: ‘OK, you can do it, you are welcome in this world’. But there are also women who don’t think they’re ready to step up to an international level, and in a way, they’re held back even if they have all the skills they need…”

A series with diversity and equality at its heart…
