Plans are underway and much work remains to be done to clean up the air from the millions of carbon emissions produced by air travel. Here, hydrogen-powered aircraft will come into play to play a truly important role.

The use of this green fuel and how it can be harnessed for clean transportation has been known for some time. Attacking the aviation sector has become a priority, which is why a study released by the ICCT (International Council on Clean Transportation) clarifies the importance of these aircrafts, as well as the feasibility of the project.

The report points out the advantages of extracting green hydrogen through clean processes and with extremely reduced gas emissions. Now, for the year 2035, they would be operational and effectively working on short and medium distance routes (about 3,400 kilometers).

(Photo: Airbus)

Some media point out the “youth” of the electric batteries to become a real option at the moment of propelling an airplane, for that reason, the study focuses on hydrogen and all that it can achieve.

Related Content: Air Nostrum to Power Aircraft with Hydrogen

To provide more specific data, the study uses two aircraft as examples: The ATR 72 turboprop and Airbus A320neo. The former is for short or regional flights, while the latter can complete medium distances.

However, one of the negative details would be the hypothetical high price. It is estimated to range between $102 and $277 per ton by 2050. If this route cannot be used, the ICCT points out that companies could turn to blue hydrogen production, obtained from fossil fuels, throwing away all projections for this propulsion source.

(Photo: Airbus)

Also, the weight of these aircraft could mean higher hydrogen consumption when calculating how much fuel would be required to fly safely. However, it can all be worthwhile if the trade-offs are minimized. The ICCT states that if all flights were to use hydrogen in 2050, CO2 eradication would be 628 Mt, which would be equivalent to 31% of total global emissions.

Of course, the study also offers more “simple to meet” projections. Adopting between 20% and 40% would mitigate 126 Mt by 2050, representing between 6% and 12% of global emissions.

The organization said that by working with multiple technologies including microelectrolyzers, metal hydride storage and mobile solar panels, it has enabled Extreme E to be the world’s first sporting event not only to use zero-emission power generators, but also to produce green hydrogen of its own for consumption during the race weekend.

Category Executives Pleased

Alejandro Agag, founder and CEO of Extreme E, said that AFC’s engineering has already proven to be key since the first day in Saudi Arabia. He noted that the inaugural event was “incredibly challenging” because of the weather conditions at AlUla desert.

“Since then, Extreme E has raced in Senegal and Greenland – it couldn’t be more diverse and remote than those two locations – from sand, heat and humidity on a beach in Lac Rose, to racing next to an Arctic ice cap,” he noted.

“AFC Energy has managed these situations and kept our cars at full power. We are setting the standard for clean fuel delivery under any situation. There are no excuses left for the industry not to be clean. We now know it can be done, we have proven it,” added Agag.

For his part, Adam Bond, CEO of AFC said the deployment of the technology was the first of its kind and shows what can be done today to move the world towards zero emission technologies.

“Governments and industries alike are realizing that without immediate investment into genuinely sustainable energy technologies, there is little or no chance that we will mitigate the change being witnessed today as global temperatures rise and extreme weather events occur,” he stressed.

Bond concluded that AFC Energy’s innovation and capabilities are poised to play a key role addressing climate change, the most pressing issue facing the world today.

German engine manufacturer Deutz has developed a hydrogen burning machine to replace questionable fossil fuels.

The TCG 7.8 H2 engine uses hydrogen as a direct fuel rather than through a fuel cell. According to the company, the innovation complies with the zero-emission CO2 limit value specified by the European Union, and is equivalent to electric motors.

Deutz currently is planning serial production of the new technology by 2024. They have already successfully completed initial tests, and the six-cylinder inline prototype is based on an existing, very quiet concept and is already delivering 200 kW of power.

Related content: “Hyundai Hidrogen Wave” will unveil the new strategy of the Asian brand

The engine is basically suitable for all areas that Deutz has already covered with this conventional propulsion. This means, for example, tractors, construction machinery, commercial and rail vehicles.

Breaking new ground

“At Deutz we are pioneers in carbon-neutral propulsion systems for off-road applications. We were already manufacturing clean and highly efficient engines, but now we are taking the next step: our first hydrogen engine. This represents an important milestone that will help us advance towards our contribution to the Paris climate goals,” says Frank Hiller, CEO of Deutz AG.

Markus Müller, Chief Technology Officer at Deutz AG, explains: “The six-cylinder TCG 7.8 H2 is based on an existing engine design. Powering 200 kW, it operates carbon-free and very quietly.”

He detailed that initially, the engine is suitable for all current company applications, but due to the available infrastructure, it is likely to be used first on stationary equipment, generators and rail transport.

Formal testing on the installed engine is expected by early 2022, highlighting that a hydrogen machine can perfectly be for everyday use. “The demonstration will be carried out on stationary equipment for power generation, under a partnership project with a regional utility company,” Deutz reported.

Among the race that different manufacturers have decided to take on to contribute to environmental responsibility, profitable business models are also being sought in global markets.

One of them is Toyota, a company that, besides developing electric vehicles, has also forged a strategy to build hydrogen cars. To achieve this goal, the firm will set up a factory to carry out fuel cell units in Kentucky, United States, starting in 2023.

The project has as its central focus to establish a dedicated production line for fuel cell modules at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky. They will be targeted for heavy-duty truck applications, including semi-trailers, that the company has been producing with its Hino subsidiary.

Market Pioneers

This program to be initiated by the organization is the first large-scale commitment to the fuel cell. It is no longer a question of manufacturing a few Toyota Mirai at an extremely gradual pace by technicians who were producing the Lexus LFA at the time, but rather Toyota intends to generate a large volume of these fuel cell modules.

The company’s unit will offer up to 160 kW of continuous power and will weigh around 635 kg, far less than many of the battery options available for commuter applications.

Related content: Nuro Announces Ambitious Plan for the Future of Autonomous Driving

The kit will be sold as a ready-to-run pack, which includes a high-voltage battery, electric motors, transmission and the necessary hydrogen storage system.

“Truck manufacturers will be able to purchase a fully integrated and validated fuel cell electric propulsion system, providing their customers with an emission-free option for the heavy-duty vehicle segment,” said Tetsuo Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America.

How It Works

Toyota details on its official website that the fuel cell system being developed is more energy efficient than internal combustion engines, and has no CO2 or pollutants emitted when operating. Moreover, drivers may expect the same comfort level as gasoline-powered vehicles, with a generous range and minimal refueling time.

They detail that it can go as far as any similarly sized gasoline vehicle, but with a hydrogen-filled tank. “It takes only three to five minutes to fill it when empty. The reward is smooth and quiet operation, great performance and water vapor as the only exhaust emission.”
