Since the creation of Extreme E, one of the drivers that has fought for the title in every season has been Rosberg X Racing. Now, facing a third adventure in the 100% electric off-road category, there are no indications to think that they will not be protagonists, although, for 2023 they will do so under a new image.

The team of Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg is preparing for the debut of the upcoming season to be held in NEOM, Saudi Arabia, where it already knows its confirmed driver pair: Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky and Johan Kristoffersson. Now, the same expert hands will fight for the championship with different aesthetic details.

To adorn the 1,780-kilogram ODYSSEY 21, black was used as the predominant color of the design, covering a large part of the car in various areas (doors, hood, rear and some spaces on the roof). This color had always been present on the car, although last year it was complemented by white.

More Light Blue

Now, the light blue that was barely seen in 2022 will take greater prominence in the new season of Extreme E, taking completely the structure of the logo, the team name, touches of ornamentation in certain areas of the vehicle, which highlights a line on the rim of the tires, symmetrical with the rest of the design.

In this way and under new colors, Rosberg X Racing will try to achieve its second title in the category. Recall that they appear in the history books of Extreme E as the first champions, after showing solid in 2021, defining the title in the final race (Jurassic X Prix) against X44.

The following year they also fought at the top of the table, and in fact, they arrived as great favorites to the final dispute (Energy X Prix), but a series of drawbacks coupled with an impeccable driving of X44, ended up snatching them what would have been the two-championship.

Finally, knowing what it is like to win the series, having two years of experience and having great drivers, makes them once again candidates for the title, understanding that every point will be vital to avoid the outcome that happened last season.

When Nico Rosberg left Formula 1 in 2016, just after becoming champion, future images projecting more and more epic fights against Lewis Hamilton immediately faded. The German preferred to take other paths where those decisions led him to have his own Extreme E team, and interestingly, so did the Briton.

Rosberg and Hamilton serve as owners of Rosberg X Racing and X44, although Nico has a more participatory role than Lewis. However, their entry into Extreme E opened a new chapter of sporting rivalry without being the protagonists behind the wheel, where the second battle was won, again, by Rosberg after being champions of the 100% electric off-road category in 2021.

“Round 3” began in 2022 with the Desert X Prix in Neom, Saudi Arabia. There, RXR delivered another blow to the table and started the season with X44 triumph, being a Déjà vu of 2021. Now, while the German’s team has won more races and has the inaugural campaign title, is it really the stronger team than X44?

Rosberg X Racing vs X44

Knowing who is better, a difficult decision that depends purely on each person’s criteria, given that on a statistical level, Rosberg X Racing outperforms X44, they have good race pace and are almost always at the front of the grid. On the other hand, X44 has presented reliability problems during season 1 that prevented them from winning on more than one occasion.

Now, in qualifying they are the best, nobody like them. They have won all the Saturday sessions with total authority, demonstrating the great competition rhythm and understanding between Sébastien Loeb and Cristina Gutiérrez. Now, when mechanical problems, bad luck or inconveniences stayed away from them, they won the only race they have to their credit (Jurassic X Prix), absolutely dominating all sessions.

So, who has been the most solid so far? Surely this question will generate divided opinions.

The last few weeks have been busy for Extreme E regarding confirmation of the protagonists who will compete for the 2022 season. The most recent team to be in the news is Rosberg X Racing, reigning champion of the category which unveiled the drivers who will be behind the wheel of the ODYSSEY 21 for this new challenge.

First of all, Johan Kristoffersson has been renewed for another year. His speed, talent and driving style convinced Nico Rosberg and company to opt for him. What he did during the first season undoubtedly contributed significantly in winning the inaugural title of the 100% electric off-road division.

After the team’s success with the duo, it was expected that Molly Taylor would continue for another year. However, Rosberg X Racing’s recent announcement surprised more than a few after confirming that the Australian will not be part of the team for the 2022 campaign, leaving her seat available to be taken by Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky.

The Swede has experience at Extreme E, defending the colors of XBXE, Jenson Button’s team, alongside Timmy Hansen, last season. Her talent will come to the German organization in an attempt to retain the trophy obtained in the last race against X44.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to join RXR to support the team in the defense of their championship title. Having the opportunity to work with the season 1 winning team is truly a great opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started!…” stated Åhlin-Kottulinsky.

She added that expects to learn a lot from both her teammate and Nico Rosberg, who are world champions with a unique footprint on motorsports. Of course, the commitment to achieving sustainable actions through the category’s main objective is also present.

“With Johan and Mikaela’s experience and track record, we’ll be ready for battle and, hopefully, we’ll get some exciting action on the track. I can’t wait for the starting signal in a couple of weeks,” Nico Rosberg sentenced.

What Happened to Molly Taylor?

Molly Taylor was really fast aboard the Rosberg X Racing ODYSSEY 21 during the inaugural campaign. Her talent was on full display at all five circuits where she competed. She even flipped her car on a couple of occasions and kept going as if it was nothing, showing her grit and competitive spirit.

Therefore, the decision to bring in Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky raised questions. Obviously, the Swede has the potential to be there, but questions arise regarding her departure. Faced with the repercussion of the news, Taylor spoke out via her official Instagram account to explain the reasons for her step aside at RXR.

“As many of you may already know, I will not be continuing with RXR this year in Extreme E. I would like to thank the entire team (which became a family) for an amazing inaugural season. Winning the first championship and holding that trophy up high was an incredible experience, and I am very proud of the result we achieved together,” she noted part of the statement.

However, a sentence that was completely open to interpretation was sure to raise questions, as Taylor noted that “there is no secret about the complex realities that exist within motorsport, often outside of the driver’s control.” However, she went on to state that her time in the category is not over yet, as well as revealing that she will soon be releasing details about her sporting future.

Dorset, United Kingdom, the stage chosen to define the Extreme E, between Rosberg X Racing and X44, who decided the championship after disputing the Jurassic X Prix. RXR won after a heart-stopping finish and with just enough to make history and become the first monarchs of the off-roaders 100% electric division.

After an action-packed Saturday session, everything was left to be defined on Sunday at the two Semifinals, Crazy Race and of course the Final Race. In Semifinal 1, X44 took control of the situation and finished first, as did RXR in Semifinal 2, sealing the duel for the final outcome.

At the Crazy Race, Timmy Hansen of Andretti United took an important advantage while completing the first lap, leaving the table set for the local driver, Catie Munnings, to set the best time of the session and earn the right to be at the Final Race. With a fright included, as Sara Price, from Chip Ganassi, got dangerously close at the end of the lap, threatening the possibility of moving on to the next stage.

Rosberg X Racing and X44: All or Nothing

With everything decided for the Final Race, X44 and Rosberg X Racing were accompanied by ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team, JBXE and Andretti United for the title definition. In order for the team of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton to be crowned monarch, it had to win this instance and score the five additional points awarded by the Continental Traction Challenge. On the other hand, Nico Rosberg and company only had to finish fourth to secure the season trophy.

At the start and through the center of the circuit, Cristina Gutiérrez (X44) started with everything and quickly moved into first position, something completely natural given the need to win to have a chance of victory on Dorsert. However, Molly Taylor (RXR) didn’t lose any ground on her and stayed behind her rival, driving cautiously in second position.

Rosberg X Racing’s ODYSSEY 21, however, was losing performance throughout the race, dropping to fourth place and pulling away from the leaders. However, luck was on their side at the end of the race due to a slight touch between Catie Munnings (Andretti United) and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky (JBXE).

At the driver changeover, nervousness gripped all those waiting for the definition of the championship. Sébastien Loeb (X44) drove with everything to take the first victory of the inaugural season of Extreme E, although with a little sadness at the loss of the title, as Johan Kristoffersson took the car to the end in fourth position to win with just enough to make history as the first champions of the 100% electric off-road series.

A storyline not for the faint of heart is less than 7 days away from definition. With all the suspense and drama possible, Rosberg X Racing and X44 will fight to be crowned as the first Extreme E champions when both ODYSSEY 21s hit the track in Dorset, UK, for the Jurassic X Prix.

The battle will begin on December 18, and one day later it’s all to play for. Throughout the four previous races, the two teams have given everything with various events, ups and downs that put them at the top of the standings with much at stake, therefore, the adrenaline, passion and excitement will be fully assured.

RXR is ahead in the championship. With a solid pace they have shown their strength through Johan Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor, who have counted in some X Prix with a touch of fortune to take all the wins, except in the Artic X Prix where Andretti United did theirs, otherwise, the dominance in the final instances has been overwhelming by Nico Rosberg and company.

X44 comes with a different story. Anyone who hasn’t seen the season unfold might say that they always fail at the final race. However, this is not the case, since luck has not been on Sébastien Loeb and Cristina Gutiérrez’s side. The pace of the purple ODYSSEY 21 was strong and overwhelming in the qualifying sessions.

17 points must be scored by the team led by Lewis Hamilton, seven-time Formula 1 champion, to snatch what has been a dream scenario for Rosberg X Racing in Extreme E so far.

“To say how many challenges we’ve faced so far in this championship, it’s almost unbelievable that we’re in second place and still in the fight,” Loeb says.  We’ve seen a lot of championship results in ways you wouldn’t expect this year, so don’t write us off!”

On the other hand, Nico Rosberg conveyed full confidence to his drivers ahead of the infartante finale ahead. “Molly and Johan are extremely talented and experienced, so they are no strangers to the pressure of this last race of the season. My advice to them and the team in general is to focus on the one event ahead of them, keep pushing until the very last moment to avoid mistakes as much as possible.”

The end is near for the first Extreme E season. From December 18-19, the Jurassic X Prix will be held in Dorset, UK, where Rosberg X Racing (RXR) will be one of the main protagonists at the closing of the championship, so knowing what to expect from them on the military track will be more than interesting.

With Johan Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor behind the wheel, RXR, the team led by Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg, has all in favor to make history and write their name on the records of Extreme E, as the first champions of the category that promises to give a twist to motorsport for the future.

Undoubtedly, both drivers have a little more margin to risk compared to their closest pursuer for the title, X44. In this way, Kristoffersson and Taylor will certainly not take unnecessary actions that would jeopardize the integrity of the ODYSSEY 21, which has been known to crack under demanding shocks.

With 129 points and a 16-point lead over X44, Rosberg X Racing has a lot going for it to qualify for the semifinals and then the final. At that stage, they will try to bring the car to the finish line on top two positions to secure the championship. Throughout the inaugural Extreme E campaign, RXR has been known for being sharp at key moments.

Hypothetically, Taylor would go out on the first lap to secure a good field and pave the way for his teammate, Kristoffersson, to take the reins of the wheel and execute another flawless lap that would bring peace of mind to the team members located at the control center, as well as the Rosberg X Racing fans.

Molly Taylor is part of the Rosberg X Racing (RXR) driver lineup with Johan Kristoffersson for the inaugural Extreme E season, where they have serious aspirations to become the inaugural champions of the electrified off-road division. The Australian was in fact able to leave her mark with the Moment of the Season.

It was the Artic X Prix in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. There, behind the wheel of RXR’s ODYSSEY 21, she brought all her talent to contribute with appropriate times to put the team in contention. However, in the middle of the action on track, her car completely overturned, freezing the hearts of all the fans, although, fortunately, she managed to stay on four wheels and continued on the course as if nothing had happened.

Taylor’s moment in the Arctic caused a sensation on social networks and quickly spread. A maneuver of such caliber could not go unnoticed, and therefore, Zenith Watches, one of the sponsoring companies of the first 1005 electric rally category, decided to immortalize the moment and recognize the move of the Rosberg X Racing driver.

In charge of presenting the award to Molly Taylor was her teammate, Johan Kristoffersson. “We’re here in Sardinia and we’re going to look for Molly because she won the Zenith Moment in Time in Greenland after the rollover, so we’ll ask her about it,” the Swedish driver commented prior to handing over the recognition.

“You know, it was a bit quick. Obviously, it wasn’t part of the plan but we survived and we were able to advance to the Final Race,” Molly commented with a chuckle as she received the watch. Undoubtedly, a moment that caught everyone’s attention, but one that Taylor hopes not to repeat again during her Extreme E journey.

The excitement, adrenaline and drama were the principal ingredients in Sardinia during the Enel X Island X Prix, because after a series of events that marked the race weekend, Rosberg X Racing dominated the track in the Final Race to consolidate their status as favorites Extreme E. championship candidates, so far.

RXB drivers, Johan Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor, once again showed their skills behind the ODYSSEY 21 steering wheel showing that they are made on Sundays, that is, for the race day, because in qualifying things did not go so well. In fact, the entire season has been this way.

His closest title chaser, X44, has also had a trend, but is not entirely favorable. In qualifying they have always been strong. They have four consecutive qualy sessions won. However, the story is different at race: punctures, blows, crashes and a lot of drama.

In Sardinia it was no exception. After having scored 18 points in the classification, they were paired with Andretti United and Chip Ganassi Racing for Semifinal 1. There, Cristina Gutiérrez, talented driver of Lewis Hamilton’s team, was in charge of opening the competition with the intention of continuing in the title fight.

However, Timmy Hansen had other plans, because he started with better traction than everyone else, but in his effort to close the way to Gutiérrez, he lost control and hit the back of his rival’s vehicle unintentionally, ruling out any possibility of competing, as the race stewards found Andretti’s man guilty of the collision, being out of the Final Race.

On the other hand, in Semifinal 2, Rosberg X Racing, ABT Cupra XE and ACCIONA | Sainz XE Team battled for a place in the Final Race. Nico Rosberg’s team showed its dominance, once again, and advanced to the decisive stage to win the Enel X Island X Prix to pointed their third season’s victory and give a heavy hit in the championship.

Finally, the podium was completed by ABT Cupra XE and JBXE. The championship is not yet decided, but clearly RXR has the advantage after leading the standings with 129 points, followed by X44 with 113 poitns. Now, everything will be defined in the last race of the year to be race in the United Kingdom, as the Jurassic X Prix, from December 18 to 19.

After ending the season-long dominance of Nico Rosberg’s team, the Andretti drivers had a great experience in Greenland, one of the most hard hit destinations due to climate change.

“I think it was an absolutely magical place to be and I also felt very honored to see it first hand,” told Catie Munnings during an interview with Daily Star Sport.

The Briton noted that she has seen rallies that were being held in Italy, Spain or Wales, but said that racing in the Arctic Circle and having the chance to win was really special.

Instead of traveling to the Central European forest, Extreme E chooses locations affected by climate change. This is all done to promote sustainability in the area, and with the electric cars used, ensure that the event is as environmentally friendly as possible.

A Well-Earned Victory

Munnings discussed in the interview how she and her teammate, Timmy Hansen, prepared to beat Rosberg’s squad. “We didn’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves before the final, but we both had a good feeling about it. We knew our pace was faster and we won the semi-final against our biggest competitors.”

“Timmy and I learned the track as best we could, practiced tactics, practiced tire strategies for flats. It was a hilly track, I think it was the most difficult track we’ve ever driven on.” “When we finished and won, I couldn’t believe it,” the driver stressed.

Delighted with Extreme E

Munnings not only stays with the Extreme E’s competitive level, but was also interested in participating on the series because of the values and the positive trail that it leaves at each region visited.

“What attracted me, and what a lot of people should understand, is that there are legacy programs. We went to Saudi Arabia, and it wasn’t a case of just showing up and taking a picture, but leaving a footprint of optimism.”

The racer revealed that by talking to people, she learned that through Extreme E and its programs they got jobs for at least five years. “There is a lot of sponsorship, and for example, in Saudi Arabia the beaches are being rebuilt to make them safer for the turtles.”

Munnings is also a pioneer, being one of the female drivers on the circuit, and the 23-year-old hopes this will bring more opportunities. “I think it’s great to see, and on this last race in Greenland, women were competing on par with men,” she said.

“I think it’s the best thing because it shows the next girl generation, who will be watching the TV broadcasting, who can have a career in motorsport if they want to,” she concluded.

Rosberg X Racing (RXR) continues to make steady progress in Extreme E, both inside and outside the races, as during the Artic X Prix a new sponsor was seen present in the off-road electric vehicle. This is Vulcan Energy, who become part of the project of former driver and Formula 1 champion, Nico Rosberg, during his first season.

This was made known by RXR through an official press release where they highlight an alliance for several years, although they did not specify how many. However, this factor does not tarnish the company’s vision of the electrified rally category, where it expects to contribute all its knowledge to develop the competition, and likewise, to extract information from the races to apply it in its daily mission.

The company’s mission is to be a producer of lithium and renewable energies with zero net greenhouse gas emissions. Its team is made up of great minds in chemistry, geology and engineering who intend to take advantage of renewable geothermal energy to give a boost to the development of electric vehicle batteries.

The sponsorship agreement between the brand and the sustainable sports organization will consist of Vulcan Energy’s presence on the 400 KW ODYSSEY 21 for the remaining three editions of the 2021 season (including the Artic X Prix), as well as on the uniforms of three-time World Rally Champion Johan Kristoffersson and Rally Australia Champion, Molly Taylor.

“We are delighted to announce Vulcan as our new official partner. It is exciting to associate with such an innovative and sustainability-focused company and we look forward to collaborating for years to come with their team. We have incredible positive momentum as we look ahead to the third X Prix,” said Nico Rosberg, CEO and founder of RXR.

“Extreme E has already achieved global recognition as the future of environmentally focused motorsport and Rosberg X Racing is leading the way. As a leader on sustainable metals for batteries, this is an excellent choice to raise global awareness of our company’s Zero Carbon Lithium business. Environmentalism is in both teams’ DNA and we also share German-Australian origins. We look forward to work with leading sustainability investor Nico Rosberg and the RXR team, for the coming seasons”, said Francis Wedin, Vulcan’s CEO.
